Amazon no longer accepting Visa credit cards from January 2022 - WTF?

AIBU to think this is madness? They're going to inconvenience so many of their customers. Still, it's good incentive to stop using Amazon I suppose!

Yes the newer Barclaycard's do give cashback and points, I have one that was originally Goldfish, that Barclaycard took over which gives points, DH's is one that he has had from the early 80s which gives nothing.

ThinWomansBrain · 18/11/2021 06:34

as more people switch to paying by card, you'd expect card costs to reduce - if Visa have increased charges and are higher than mastercard, then not unreasonable to challenge them. Bet they're still lower than Amex though.
Be interesting to see if it filters through to lower charges to all retailers.

YesNoWhoCares · 18/11/2021 06:38

I think that Visa is the bad boy here, not Amazon, Amazon is taking a stand against it that smaller companies can't do

notaladyinred · 18/11/2021 06:43

Yes but they are now changing their debit cards to Mastercard (was Visa). I had a letter a couple of months ago, and presumably will get a new card closer to my expiry date.

The fact that people are surprised that one of the other big companies is so popular says a lot about how rarely most people change banks, and so get used to their own card type being the default.

Message was supposed to quote the message about Natwest moving to Mastercard!

@sbhydrogen

I've never seen a Visa credit card before 🤔
Our credit card with Nationwide is Visa. They don't offer a Mastercard. I think there are more Visa credit cards than Mastercard ones
brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 18/11/2021 07:38

The EU capped card fees to 0.3%

Having left, VISA decided to pump them up higher as Brexit is just one big opportunity to rip consumers off.

Amazon responded “WTF, VISA ?”

We are now here. No doubt the fee hike will be delayed until after BFCM / Christmas

dementedpixie · 18/11/2021 07:40

They didn't do the same with the Mastercard Fee hike. Do you think MC did a deal with them to keep them sweet?

dementedpixie · 18/11/2021 07:46

The increased fees for Visa and Masrercard were supposed to be delayed until April next year.

Amazon have gone into business with Mastercard, issuing their own Amazon credit card........
YesNoWhoCares · 18/11/2021 07:55

Amazon have preferred MasterCard for ages, I have had cash a couple of time from them in the past year or two for adding a MasterCard - probably why I didn't get the £20 on offer from them at the moment and had to have just a £10 offer instead

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 18/11/2021 08:46

I know it's inconvenient but this is a good thing in my view.

Because if Amazon didn't resist it, then you'd likely see Mastercard follow suit and rag their fees up too.

Like the mobile phone companies are on roaming - early mentions of "we'd never do that" - then they fall like dominoes because shareholders innit

dementedpixie · 18/11/2021 09:01

Mastercard are due to increase fees too

Wallywobbles · 18/11/2021 09:09

Visas fées are going from .3% to 1.5%. Presumably this will affect all shops not just Amazon? So you'll be doing no one any favors by staying with visa?

MasterCard already did; www.finextra.com/newsarticle/37335/mastercard-hikes-interchange-fees-for-uk-online-purchases-from-the-eu

But Amazon clearly have a deal or understanding with MasterCard. This has probably more to do with market domination than fees, and they’ve used this as an excuse to go after Visa.

dementedpixie · 18/11/2021 09:42

Mastercard have delayed the rise in rates until next year

PrtScn · 18/11/2021 09:45

I’m clearly getting interchange fees confused with the rates. Mastercard are probably waiting to see how things pan out with Visa then 🤣
dementedpixie · 18/11/2021 09:49

The link says Visa have also delayed the rise. Amazon are maybe saying they will stop using them in January to try to persuade them to reduce the rise

That’s in the US though?
dementedpixie · 18/11/2021 10:04

Ah maybe
Do we already have raised fees then? Should have come in in October 21

Pemba · 18/11/2021 15:00

@Bloodfart I love that advert!

Is that Lawrence from 'Abigail's Party'?

@TicTacHoh
**If you set up to pay on PayPal instead, you can carry on using visa if you set your visa as your default PayPal method. I use this to get round stores not accepting Amex.

Do you still get the CC purchase protection via PayPal?

itsjustnotok · 18/11/2021 17:32

Santander changed to Mastercard debit cards recently for protection. Got a new T&C through from MBNA for my Visa CC and the interest rate now is near 30%!! Thank God I don't have a balance on it! I don't blame Amazon.
