Amazon no longer accepting Visa credit cards from January 2022 - WTF?

AIBU to think this is madness? They're going to inconvenience so many of their customers. Still, it's good incentive to stop using Amazon I suppose!

The reason Amazon (and others) are dropping Visa is because of the huge hike in fees Visa are demanding. Why? Because the can. Before Brexit, fees were capped,/regulated now they are not, so they're (trying) to fill their boots. Such unusual behaviour for bankers.
Solution? Get an Amazon branded Mastercard and take advantage of t hefty bonus programme. I use Amazon a lot, so I got one of their cards and have now had around £80 in gift cards since May.

minimecantrollerskate · 18/11/2021 17:46

My Tesco Credit Card was Visa until this year and now it is Mastercard. Visa used to be far more popular but now everything seems to be Mastercard.

I have an Amazon credit card that I use for my business spending and get Amazon vouchers via points, so can recommend that one.

LoisLane66 · 18/11/2021 17:48

You can use a Mastercard. Many banks are issuing Mastercards rather than Visa credit cards in January and your bank will notify you of the change.

LoisLane66 · 18/11/2021 17:50

Visa is British. Mastercard is not.

AnnoyedinJanuary · 18/11/2021 17:59

Amazon give you the option of switching to an Amazon Credit Card which I did and got a £40 Amazon Voucher for my trouble. Easy peasy to do and approves you instantly and gives you a % of your limit to spend right away. Assume it will be easy to pay online via Amazon website also......

itsallgoingpearshaped · 18/11/2021 18:05

Both companies need to be slapped; they're worth billions.

GrannyRose15 · 18/11/2021 18:25

They won't go ahead. Visa will come to it's senses and lower it's charges. It is they who won't be able to stand the loss of Amazon business, not the other way round.

IWishIHadNotDoneIt · 18/11/2021 18:34

My Visa debit card has just changed Mastercard. Maybe that's why

Maskless · 18/11/2021 18:57

They are accepting Mastercard. When I received the email I applied online for a Mastercard with Santander and was accepted immediately.

Job done.

It's only the loss of the UKs Amazon business though ...
RobotValkyrie · 18/11/2021 19:47

No way I'd shop anywhere on the Internet with my debit card.
Credit card offers much better protection. And mine is a VISA, so...
Bye Amazon, you won't be missed!

VaderX · 18/11/2021 20:01

Here's a clear explanation of the reason why and what's going on with Amazon and Visa:

www.headforpoints.com/2021/11/17/this-is-why-amazon-wont-accept-visa-cards/

Morgysmum · 18/11/2021 20:14

You would think a big firm like Amazon, would be able a absorb, the charge from Visa, to keep the extra business.
If you don't have any other cards and don't want another card or can get one, you are then snookered. It doesn't seem to make much business sense to me.

DebHagland · 18/11/2021 21:59

Simple answer.......shop from local small businesses instead of lining the (already to fat) pockets of big multi-nationals like Amazon

chaosmaker · 18/11/2021 22:29

Would love it if people stopped using amazon. Cash is always available for shopping with. Online there is paypal or a multitude of payment sites. I've never had or wanted a credit card so yes, some of us do use them to shop online!

lllllllllll · 18/11/2021 22:31

Solution? Get an Amazon branded Mastercard

Errr, no thanks!

The solution as another poster said is to stop shopping with Amazon.

Mamanyt · 19/11/2021 00:10

Isn't Brexit fun?

"Since Brexit, an EU-enforced cap on fees charged by card issuers is no longer in place in the UK."

ConstructionGirl21 · 19/11/2021 00:12

My credit card and my husband’s with First Direct is a Visa card, but they changed the debit card to Mastercard a while ago

LoisLane66 · 19/11/2021 09:13

As someone upthread mentioned not shopping at Amazon. Some things are not available locally and those that are, are much more expendive and they don't deliver. Amazon do all that and often with free postage.
A book by a former Bake Off finalist (not White or Hussein) was 14.99 in my local bookstore. That person visited my town to do a demo and book signing. Many friends bought the signed book. A week later I looked to see if I could buy it cheaper on Amazon and bingo! It was 2.99, free p&p and when it arrived it was signed (not that I valued the signature)
My friends were disappointed at spending so much more.
Amazon is great.

enjoyitwhileitlasts · 19/11/2021 09:19

They will still accept Visa Debit. Maybe we should all just get used to buying things that we can pay for instead of using credit all the time.

NewlyGranny · 19/11/2021 09:30

I think it's a great incentive to avoid using Amazon at all! They've got way too big and we keep being told they're dodging taxes and not treating workers well.

I buy lots of books and tend to use Wordery which is a UK company. I love their website. As for other purchases, I use Amazon as a shop window and then Google the product I prefer to see if I can buy it directly. I nearly always can, and it never costs more.

I won't be shopping online with my debit card, though - you don't get the same level of consumer rights!

LoisLane66 · 19/11/2021 09:32

I find that PayPal credit is the best although I do use Klarna, ClearPay and bank credit cards.
PayPal deals with all and any problems arising from purchases. If your spend is over £99 you can pay minimum of £5pm and the rest 4 months later. They offer 12 free returns per year and don't take any money from your linked bank account until 14 days after you receive the goods, giving you enough time to decide to keep or return. I cannot fault them. No hassle and they answer calls in a timely manner.

Oreo78 · 19/11/2021 09:44

Interesting. I didn't know this, but it makes me reconsider the amount of Amazon affiliate links I will place on my blog now.

YesNoWhoCares · 19/11/2021 09:58

A lot who use credit cards pay off in full each month and use them for the extra benefits they provide, like section 75, cashback and gift vouchers.
Hankunamatata · 19/11/2021 10:24

Funny if just checked and my cc are all Mastercard
