AIBU to think this is madness? They're going to inconvenience so many of their customers. Still, it's good incentive to stop using Amazon I suppose!

It's mad. I'll have to stop using Amazon too. I suppose it's good for more local shops if people stop using Amazon

Clutterbugsmum · 17/11/2021 09:54

I was thinking the same.

I also thought are they trying to make people to use debit cards instead, as there is less protection for users then with credit cards.

Megan2018 · 17/11/2021 09:55

They are just trying to force Visa to reduce fees. I bet it won’t happen, someone is going to cave in.
But it will help me to stop buying crap at 1am if it does….

Hilda40 · 17/11/2021 09:57

Natwest changed over from Visa to Mastercard recently I had wondered why.

The issue is with visa credit cards due to the high fees. Amazon will still be accepting visa debit cards:

Amazon customers can still use Visa debit cards, Mastercard and Amex credit cards, and Eurocard

HeatingOnHeatingOff · 17/11/2021 09:59

I dont think visa credit cards are that common?

I always thought the majority of credit cards were mastercard

MatildaIThink · 17/11/2021 09:59

If you are desperate to use a credit card then use a Mastercard or Amex card, or just use a debit card like the majority of people do.

NichyNoo · 17/11/2021 09:59

I received an email from Amazon about this and assumed it was a scam email so deleted!

I thought the opposite. I rarely see MasterCard, all my family have Visa and when I worked in a shop it was 90% visa with the odd MasterCard or AMEX.
Merinocool · 17/11/2021 10:01

The only card I really use is a visa credit.

Both my DH bank Barclays and mine HSBC are Visa credit cards

I thought that too. In this house we have a selection of visa debit cards but our joint credit cards are MasterCard
Willyoujustbequiet · 17/11/2021 10:03

My debit card just changed from a Visa to a Mastercard and I wondered why. Santander told me I had greater protection with Mastercard than Visa.

Frazzled2207 · 17/11/2021 10:03

@Hilda40

First direct went the other way. This is debit though.

“ or just use a debit card like the majority of people do.”

I barely ever use a debit card. It’s much more sensible to use a credit card for the additional consumer protection.

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 17/11/2021 10:05

Just credit cards? Will they continue to accept Visa debit cards? Myself and DC all have Visa.

Frazzled2207 · 17/11/2021 10:05

Oh ignore me I am am talking rubbish. First direct went to MasterCard like Nat west

Also of course there are lots of visa credit cards, they were the original weren’t they? I thought debit cards were much later

Abcdefgottago · 17/11/2021 10:06

This only applies to Visa credit cards - Visa Debits won't be affected & you can still use them as previously.

Opposite here!

We’ve got our first Mastercard recently after switching from having Visa cards for over 20 years.

Wakemeuuuup · 17/11/2021 10:07

Looks like Visa are raising their charges in January because they can post brevity. God help our small traders.

Wakemeuuuup · 17/11/2021 10:08

Post Brexit, not brevity. Stupid autocorrect

Dear

We’re writing to notify you of an upcoming change to Amazon.co.uk.

Starting 19 January, 2022, we will unfortunately no longer accept Visa credit cards issued in the UK, due to the high fees Visa charges for processing credit card transactions. You can still use debit cards (including Visa debit cards) and non-Visa credit cards like Mastercard, Amex, and Eurocard to make purchases. Please update your default payment method now, or add one of these new, eligible payment methods if you do not have one.

You can update your Prime membership here, and if you have any subscriptions on Amazon.co.uk, you can update them on the ''manage your subscription'' page here.

We know this may be inconvenient, and we’re here to help you through this transition so you can continue enjoying Amazon’s low prices and wide selection. Please visit this help page for more information on payment methods, or go directly to your account.

Update your account now

My Santander debit card just changed from Visa to MasterCard - I did wonder why the swap but maybe this explains it.

TicTacHoh · 17/11/2021 10:11

If you set up to pay on PayPal instead, you can carry on using visa if you set your visa as your default PayPal method. I use this to get round stores not accepting Amex.
