Listed these on a post in another thread but I think it deserves a thread of its own. These are just some films that are being remade in 2022:

An American Werewolf in London
Dirty Dancing
Drop Dead Fred
The Birds
Little Shop Of Horrors
My Fair Lady
Scarface
The Bodyguard
Gremlins
The Lost Boys
Hellraiser
A Nightmare on Elm Street
I know what you did last Summer
Sister Act
The Sword in the Stone
The Fly

If recent remakes are anything to go by, paying to see any one of these will be a complete waste of money. AIBU? Are any of your favourites listed that you think a remake is needed/you would welcome?
@SoniaFouler But surely before reposting something as absolute fact as you have in your OP, it’s common sense to fact check what you’re saying is true? Just typing “An American Werewolf in London remake” shows that there were vague talks a few years ago and then the third article down is a 2019 story which has the search headline “ Max Landis' American Werewolf In London Remake Is Probably Not Happening”.

I don’t have strong feelings either way about IMDb being the leading website for films. Sure, it can list the cast of some obscure episode of some sitcom for years ago but it also has a lot of user-generated nonsense (which, without a link, I assume this is).
I did not post anything as “absolute fact” and if you’ve been a user of MN for a long time and frequent the AIBU board in particular and expect everything to be absolutely factual, I’d recommend you do the old MN trope and “give your head a wobble”! That’s not to say I posted something I completely made up, or I knew was made up, because I didn’t.

Secondly, from the original thread I posted this list on (which I didn’t include here) I said, and I quote: I’m just including the main ones/films I’ve seen - I’ve never seen AAWIL but know the title well enough to know it’s a popular/cult film that is considered to be included as one of the “main”. But going by what your suggestion, it seems that you are correct that an article published in August 2019 says it “probably won’t be happening” but a later article in November 2019 says “probably happening”. Should the latter be taken as more trustworthy as it was published later and with more time and hindsight of facts behind it, or not? Is that the nature of the Internet? Or is it relying on what you seen on screen in front of you? (What makes screenrants “probably not happening” August 2019 link more credible than moviewebs “possibly happening” November 2019 article, especially as the later takes into account the former article and goes on to our a new producer/director in the frame?

@KrisAkabusi

Assuming that in each case you mean the best known version, five in your list are remakes themselves. So who's to say that new versions others won't be as good or better?
True. I don’t trust any remakes from this decade or last to be good though. From the proof of the ones I’ve seen released in that timeframe. But hypocritical, I know!

Cinema is dead i think

Not yet I think, but it's certainly in resus!

I recently saw "last night in soho" and thoroughly enjoyed it! But there are very few decent films getting made.

There’s never been a good remake of any Hitchcock film.

Agreed! As I said the arrogance to think you can outdo one of the if not THE greatest filmmakers of all time is frankly astounding!

@GiveMeYourDog are you very young? It doesn't mean the new generation gets the chance to experience them because ultimately they are not the same piece of art. Some barely have a passing resemblance to the original work! Creating a film is so much more than key plot points.

PLUS in this day and age it's extremely easy for them to experience the usually far better quality originals both via streaming and showings in cinemas.

Eg I have never seen "the matrix" but it is my kinda film so I am tempted to go see the 20th anniversary restoration

As a huge fan of the Rocky franchise I'm also considering going to see the Rocky v drago directors cut, especially as I really love the creed films of the franchise LOVE Michael b Jordan

Together her children and I believe Sue would bless this decision

Like hell she would! As you say she was ADAMANT they would NEVER be filmed! So sad that she trusted the family rather than putting a clause in her will of some kind.

As all true graftonians say

The alphabet ends at Y

@TyrannysaurusXXrightshoarder the remake of the taking of Pelham 123 is shockingly bad! I'm stunned Washington and travolta participated. Travolta can have dodgy choices, Washington is generally good at picking his projects

Its just sad and shows a real lack of creativity and innovation in the industry.

It doesn't though, the creativity and innovation IS there but the big studios/distributors aren't interested

@AliceMcK even my 20 yo dd wouldn't entertain a remake of gremlins! It's one of her favourite films I may have indoctrinated her into a love of 70's and 80's horror movies that have ruined her for modern ones

@Hellotoallmyfans the alphabet series being set in the 80's is KEY to who Kinsey is (a single woman not really interested in marriage and certainly not having kids) and certain plot points and even major denouements will absolutely not work if set in 2020's!

Also a huge number of the fans are people like myself (and I suspect the other graftonians on thread) for whom the 80's were our era and so that's a major part of the appeal of them

They can’t/don’t want to turn down what is going to be a big production but when it inevitably gets panned by critics and hated by audiences, they get the blame/blacklisted

Yes!

@Maskless now more than ever I would LOVE to see far more feminism based movies, but historically women aren't considered a worthwhile target market because we don't spend enough at the cinema - because we aren't paid as well as men! Oh the irony!

I would personally also love to see more films in English language (as my eyesight is shit these days for reading subtitles) but about non English speaking countries and their histories, mythologies and religions I think it would open peoples minds and encourage a more cohesive and empathetic society generally

as they wont recast Patrick Swayze's part.

I agree, that would invite far too much criticism

I think it's unimportant which exact films op posted about to some degree as what is happening generally in the western cinematic world is far too many remakes and not enough new, quality films being made

sashh · 17/11/2021 05:39

@TangerineDreams

How very dare they?!!

They will be abominations! What is The Fly without Jeff? Which baby is going to put in the corner and what non-Patrick Swayze will come get her?!

You realise 'the fly' with Jeff is a remake don't you?
5keletor · 17/11/2021 07:01

One of my favourites is on that list, I'm not interested in seeing how they butcher it with a remake.

Missey85 · 17/11/2021 07:44

I hate remakes too the original is always best its just people trying to make money off other peoples work

Kikkomam · 17/11/2021 08:08

Cinema is most definitely not dead.

category12 · 17/11/2021 08:48

I feel like remakes can be excellent, and each version can bring something new.

Like the Fly - multiple versions, the Jeff Goldblum one is gutsy and can't help but love Jeff - and the 1958 one has something too.

Laughingravy · 17/11/2021 12:06

Oscar winning screenwriter William Goldman was pretty pithy when he wrote about remakes. They are simply a safe bet, like many of the endless sequels. He alway thought that films with a great story but that turned out clunkers should be remade but the money men don't like taking risks.
His books are well worth a read if you are into film.

ImUninsultable · 17/11/2021 13:27

The Sword in the Stone is a live action version and like all the other Disney live action remakes they will change it. It's more of a stand alone than a remake. Different styles.

WalkingOnTheCracks · 17/11/2021 19:22

I never understand why people get upset about films being re-made. No-one minds plays or musicals being re-staged.

Thing is about re-making films - it doesn't matter what you do to them, how you interpret them, what new twists you come up with, because you're not in anyway damaging the original or doing something irrevocable to the movies that already exist.

So, sure - make 007 female. Have a shot at an all-male Romeo and Juliet. Produce a Magnificent Seven set in Warrington. Animate Citizen Kane and make all the characters My Little Ponies. Some people will like it, and some won't, and that's fine.

Then again, I preferred the re-make of Charlie and the Chocolate factory to the Gene Wilder version. Apparently this is close to sacrilege.
