Listed these on a post in another thread but I think it deserves a thread of its own. These are just some films that are being remade in 2022:

An American Werewolf in London
Dirty Dancing
Drop Dead Fred
The Birds
Little Shop Of Horrors
My Fair Lady
Scarface
The Bodyguard
Gremlins
The Lost Boys
Hellraiser
A Nightmare on Elm Street
I know what you did last Summer
Sister Act
The Sword in the Stone
The Fly

If recent remakes are anything to go by, paying to see any one of these will be a complete waste of money. AIBU? Are any of your favourites listed that you think a remake is needed/you would welcome?

@Goshitstricky

Absolutely outraged at remaking Drop Dead Fred! It was Rik Mayall's, how very dare they?! AngryAngryAngry
Totally and utterly this.
Fomofo · 16/11/2021 20:31

I rather liked the female remake of ghost busters

ThorsLeftNut · 16/11/2021 20:31

THEY BETTER NOT TOUCH SISTER ACT

LennyAndTheDucks · 16/11/2021 20:31

@DoctorWhoTardis

They can't remake dirty dancing! Sad They will ruin it.
Dirty Dancing was remade a couple of years ago but barely anyone knows because it was a complete flop.
Karmagoat · 16/11/2021 20:32

Cinema is dead i think, sad but true. I definitely won't be watching any of these remakes as most of them are some of my favourite films, and I know they won't compare. I'll stick with the originals

DrSbaitso · 16/11/2021 20:37

@Mooserp

The Fly with Jeff Goldblum was actually a remake.

Rik Mayall was also in American Werewolf in London (teeny part)

So was Little Shop of Horrors, but the original was rubbish and the Rick Moranis one was brilliant, so that's OK.
DrSbaitso · 16/11/2021 20:38

I haven't actually seen Drop Dead Fred, missed that somehow.

It's got 11% on Rotten Tomatoes...could they do it any harm?

MichelleScarn · 16/11/2021 20:40

FUMMING FUMMIMG at all of them I tells you!!

With a 77% audience score

I’ve always thought Hellraiser needed updating Pinhead and his crew is fantastic but the acting was so hammy at the time let alone now.

However the chances are they’ll over do the sadistic bits, make it very graphic and totally unwatchable.

CherryPieface · 16/11/2021 20:55

There’s never been a good remake of any Hitchcock film.

GiveMeYourDog · 16/11/2021 20:55

I have never understood why people have a problem with remakes/covers?

New generation gets to EXPERIENCE them.

PurpleDaisies · 16/11/2021 20:56

They can EXPERIENCE them (why the caps?!) by watching the originals.
MrsSkylerWhite · 16/11/2021 20:56

The Bodyguard couldn’t be any worse. Bloody terrible film.

RockNRollMartian · 16/11/2021 20:57

A remake of a popular film that can hold a candle to the original is a rarity. It's laziness and looking for a way to make a quick profit with minimal effort.

So disappointing. If I want to watch The Birds, I'm watching at least partly because it feels like brief escape into the past, with all the fashions, the way people speak, the cars, etc. A remake that will probably be set in current times will have none of that charm. What's the point? Modern CGI effects? Current fashion and slang? Not that interested!

BoredZelda · 16/11/2021 20:57

It depends. If it a remake “Psycho” style, imitating shot for shot then it is pointless.

If it is a modern twist on an old story, treating it as a stand-alone movie, these can be alright. I liked the ghostbusters remake. And Annie stood up as a watchable movie when you distanced it from the original.

SoniaFouler · 16/11/2021 20:58

I didn’t know Dirty Dancing was a sequel (to the original or the sequel, though?) but like others have said already the original was already remade a couple of years ago and it was AWFUL. This is the final dance which is laughable compared to the dance in the original that actually contained talent:

Hellotoallmyfans · 16/11/2021 21:03

I thought they already remade dirty dancing? And also - I realise not on the list but probably the greatest film of all time - Footloose.
Yes, they were THAT forgettable!

Riverlee · 16/11/2021 21:03

I quite like the remake of Dirty Dancing. The story differs slightly from the first one and in some parts is better.

Wheresmywoolyjumpers · 16/11/2021 21:05

Much as I love Hitchcock, I think they could do a lot more with the Birds. And hopefully not abuse the actors in the process.

Anonymous48 · 16/11/2021 21:05

Disgusted? No, of course not.

Not interested in seeing most (if any) of them? Absolutely.

WickedWitchOfTheEast87 · 16/11/2021 21:05

@KurtWilde

I love the majority of these films and I won't be bothering watching an updated version, remake, or reimagining of any of them. Most of these are classics and need leaving the hell alone!
^^ This in a nutshell!
SoniaFouler · 16/11/2021 21:07

@Graphista

Ugh I agree!

Fed up with Hollywood/filmmakers being so afraid to take a chance on new writers, new scripts, new ideas.

And for the love of god they need to

LEAVE BELOVED CLASSICS ALONE!

Who on Earth has the arrogance to think they can do better than Hitchcock?!

And surely it makes little business sense seeing as the majority of us familiar with the originals WON'T bother with the remakes?!

That must dent profits!

Is nobody writing new material or are the producers just playing it safe?

Plenty of new screen writers - and even new books as source material it's the producers being ludicrously risk averse

That's rhetorical though

Okidoke I'm still leaving my comment though

Haven't they already had a go at remaking Dirty Dancing and wasn't it a total flop?

They did. A dire TV movie I caught dd watching upon which she said "I thought you said it was great" and I said "the original is not this shite!"

We watched the original the following day and dd was like "that remake is a disaster!"

@unhomme I had a similar experience with my parents and their beloved films. I watched the originals then and learned not to bother with remakes even at that early age.

You need to get a grip if your “disgusted” by remakes of movies

I don't think it's an extreme reaction when you consider the impact of such decisions on the industry (which makes a LOT of money and employees millions of people), on writers and on our culture. This is not a frivolous decision.

I think remaking a film is insulting to everyone who worked on and starred in the original.

I agree especially when it's usually a very poor product the remake

@SummaLuvin remakes/cover versions better than the original are the exception rather than the rule

Hollywood is run by accountants and they don't want to take the slightest risk so they rehash the old faves.

Sadly true these days

Where are the auteurs? Where are the producers with an artistic background?

How do you remake slasher films when everyone has a mobile phone now?

Oh do not even get me started on that!

I'm a huge sue grafton fan. She swore she never wanted her books filmed and now less than 5 years after her passing her husband/family have sold her out and her books are being made into a tv series by bloody a&e studios which are part Disney

So god knows what a mess they're going to make!

Her dd on sm confirmed they aren't even going to be set in the 80's (which all the books are) they're going to have a modern setting which is going to totally mess with major plot points even conclusions in several of her books! It's a disaster in the making! Borne out of pure greed!

It's writers I feel for as they're being squeezed more and more and expected to work without appropriate compensation for their work. Yet without them the tv shows and films we know and love wouldn't exist at all.

Bloody hell. Just read up on Sue Grafton. Wasn’t familiar with this. Angry

“ Grafton’s many fans might celebrate the chance to see her work on the screen, and wonder who might play the famed sleuth Millhone. They might also remember a vow she made back in 1997, recalling her unhappy experiences writing for television movies before she caught on as a novelist.

“I will never sell (Kinsey) to Hollywood. And, I have made my children promise not to sell her. We’ve taken a blood oath, and if they do so I will come back from the grave: which they know I can do,” she told January Magazine. “They’re going to have to pass the word on to my grandchildren: we do not sell out our grandma.”

Grafton’s daughter Jamie Clark reaffirmed her mother’s vow when announcing her death four years ago, but the author’s husband and executive producer of the series, Steve Humphrey, says he and the family have agreed that the times — and the medium — have changed.

“Television has greatly evolved since Sue was writing in Hollywood in the 1980s. From her experience then, she was concerned that her stories and characters would be diminished when they were adapted. But as the power of television has transformed over time, so too has the quality from writing and acting to the production values and viewing experience,” Humphrey said in a statement issued through A+E and also posted on Grafton’s Facebook page.

“I selected A+E Studios as my partner because they understand the importance of maintaining the tone and tenor of Sue’s work and the character and are dedicated to working with us to bring her stories to life in a way that that will please both current and new fans, and will also honor her legacy.
“Together her children and I believe Sue would bless this decision and would be delighted to see her cherished Alphabet murder series live on and reach millions of new and existing fans around the world.”

Might as well piss on her grave while at it. Angry

Personally, I couldn’t believe it when they remade The Taking of Pelham 123 and The Italian Job. Why? Seriously, why? But, Drop Dead Fred? They fuck right off with that, the dirty fucking bastards.

WickedWitchOfTheEast87 · 16/11/2021 21:13

I most definitely won't be watching no one can do a better job than Rik Mayall did as Drop Dead Fred!
