To not know the sleeping bunnies song.

DD is 5 and they are having nursery rhyme week at school, the ones they are featuring are 'Head shoulders, knees and Toes' 'Incy wincy spider', 'Wind the bobbin up', 'down in the Jungle' and 'Sleeping Bunnies'

I've not heard of the last 2, I was born mid 80s and don't remember either of them, I've seen in the Jungle on a cbeebies or something, but I have never heard little bunnies, DD assures me she used to do little bunnies all the time at playgroup which nana took her to. But I've still not actually heard it until I have just looked up a video now and now I am all confused because DD insists it is just bunnies and there should not be frogs , elephants or crocodiles.

I tried Google to find out when and where it is from but I just get presented with different versions of the videos, I'm lost, did this one just pass me by?

Sleeping bunnies was new to me with my first kid too! But down in the jungle was a favourite in our car growing up. YABU 😉

dephlogisticated · 15/11/2021 20:32

80s child here and I had never heard it until having my own children. Embrace the genius of this song now you have it in your life: the sleeping bit can be strung out for ages if you play it right, enjoy the peace. On a similar note, try a chocolate meditation, the sugar to silence ratio is a beautiful thing!

Starlightstarbright1 · 15/11/2021 20:40

I was a childminder for nearly a decade.

So yes. Sleeping bubbies has a tendancy to diversify to alsorts even sleeping trains chug chug chug.

Gliderx · 15/11/2021 20:45

Had this frequently at toddler groups with now 4yo DS.

I always assumed the purpose of it was to introduce the concept of self-control and stillness for toddlers Grin. The sleeping part was the only time my DS ever stayed still in those classes (including circle time).

WarrickDavisAsPlates · 15/11/2021 21:25

I definitely remember doing sleeping bunnies at playgroup in the very early 90's.

SugarlumpsesBumpses · 15/11/2021 21:27

I learnt it when I worked at a nursery , but hadn't heard it as a child!

doadeer · 15/11/2021 21:32

I didn't sing it in the 90s when I was a kid but it's played at every baby group I went to

NadjaofAntipaxos · 15/11/2021 21:34

I like the addition of a second verse, "wiggle little bunnies wiggle wiggle wiggle". A room full of toddlers all wiggling. Gorgeous.

supremelybaffled · 15/11/2021 21:35

Grim. Bunnies and bobbins both.

That's all.

Crunchymum · 15/11/2021 21:37

I am an early 80's child and we did "down in the jungle" but I only learnt sleeping bunnies with my youngest (who is nearly 4)

Voord · 15/11/2021 21:38

I can’t remember Sleeping Bunnies from my own childhood but it’s a straight-up banging tune.

Pinkflipflop85 · 15/11/2021 21:39

Early 80s child.

We sang wind the bobbin up, hop little bunnies, down in the jungle and the frog song.

Voord · 15/11/2021 21:44

Wind the Bobbin Up is also an absolute banger with awesome dance moves. Point to that ceiling, point to that floor!

Grin

Point to the windows (whoop, whoop!)

Rummikub · 15/11/2021 21:50

I only learnt sleeping bunnies at dds playgroup. She loved it.
Just sang it to teen now Grin

FavouriteMug · 15/11/2021 21:53

Love all those songs and remember them when ours were little and at playgroup.

My sister knows the organiser of World Nursery Rhyme Week, she's a teacher (my sis) and she says hands down best week of their school calendar.

I wonder though if there are any songs out of bounds or on a banned list?

Tempted to ask!

VestaTilley · 15/11/2021 21:54

I have a 2.5 year old DS and I’m not sure I know the ‘down in the jungle’ one...and we did ALL the baby/toddler groups and he goes to nursery.

I only heard of ‘sleeping bunnies’ when we first started going to groups.

At home I sing traditional nursery rhymes to him; I think it’s nicer to keep those alive than newer YouTube songs! (Not the darker ones so much Grin)

nonettles · 15/11/2021 21:58

i prefer this jungle version!

Marimaur · 15/11/2021 22:02

‘Down in the Jungle’ has the same tune as one I used to sing (in the 80s) that goes ‘down by the banks of the hanky panky, where the bullfrogs jump from bank to banky..’

Sleeping bunnies I heard when I had kids but not before.

GTAlogic · 15/11/2021 22:10

I don't remember singing it when I was a child but when I worked in a nursery nearly 20 years ago we sang it there, along with take a stick in this hand, take a stick in that; open, shut them, open, shut them; another verse of incy wincy spider where he climbs up a tree in the snow and teddy bear teddy bear.

CaddieDawg · 15/11/2021 22:22

My toddler LOVES sleeping bunnies, as others have said it gains you a moment's peace and they also get to jump around so love it too.

I hadn't heard of that or wind the bobbin up etc when I was wee, I had to learn soo many songs at bookbug/baby and toddler classes and felt like the only one who didn't know...but I was a 90s kid and only songs I remember are Singin' kettle tunes Grin.... Spout, handle, lid of metal! What’s inside the Singing Kettle?????

Seren85 · 15/11/2021 22:28

I definitely don't remember it from when I was little (born 1985) but my niece, now 3, was obsessed with it.

FavouriteMug · 15/11/2021 22:46

Open Shut Them, I think we used to sing that at Music Bugs - can't quite remember how it goes but my son was obsessed with that particular song plus another one about a tree?

Off to Google now!

GTAlogic · 15/11/2021 22:57

Open, shut them,
Open, shut them,
Give a little clap.
Open, shut them,
Open, shut them,
Lay them on your lap.
Roll them, roll them,
Roll them just like this.
Shake them, shake them,
Give a little kiss (and then blow a kiss).

I still sing songs like this when I'm working in Foundation or KS1 and want the children to be quiet but don't want to shout!

TheSpiral · 16/11/2021 12:38

Our Open Shut Them was creepier!

open shut them
open shut them
do a little clap
roll them roll them
roll them roll them
put them in your lap
creep them creep them
creep them creep them
right up to your chin
open up your little mouth
but DO NOT LET THEM IN!
