Surely, UK has as much responsibility as any other country to accept asylum seekers fleeing from desperate situations? Why should France be tasked with the responsibility of preventing asylum seekers to cross the English channel in boats to the UK?

@Fairylights25

How will your plan to deport people to France work?

Fairylights25 · 16/11/2021 13:35

Turning them back before they reach British waters would be a good option

And who will do that? And what will happen when they sink their own vessels?

This was, I believe seriously considered by the captain of the liner taking Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany to Cuba (I maybe wrong) in 1938, when the country who had offered to take them reneged on the deal. They were then forced to head back to Germany. As it was, other European countries including the UK took a share. Needless to say it ended badly for those accommodated in mainland Europe..

@Fairylights25

The UK can make its own laws now, so if the government wants to get very tough on immigration (or anything else) It now can, and they do seem very committed to doing so. So from that point of view brexit is a good thing, as now we can hold our own government accountable.

Not to say we are going to become like Saudi, but we can definitely do much more to improve the situation significantly.

Not this nonsense again! Britain has always been able to make its own laws. Britain has always controlled its own borders. "Now we can hold our own government accountable" - you have literally swallowed hook line and sinker the mistruths that were spread to make people fear and hate. I bet you believed Turkey was on the brink of joining the EU too.

This is so depressing and so inevitable. Blame the French, blame lazy teachers, blame lazy doctors, blame people for dying of Covid. If this government spent less time on spin and more time doing its job, the U.K. would a far better place currently.
Sadly it seems to be working (judging by many of the posts on this thread) - 1930's playbook classic deflection tactics.

@Alondra

Answering the original post...

France is being blamed by your very conservative and mouth piece from government press because after Brexit and the controlling borders slogan, the whole thing has gone to shit.

Reality is not about slogans. The whole first world is under pressure from illegal immigration, from the USA with the border to Mexico, Spain with crossings from Morocco, Germany from Eastern Europe, Italy and Greece from Syria...etc, etc...

Whoever sold the slogan to the UK about protecting borders LIED. The reality is that the UK was protected from illegal migrants thanks to be an island with many borders in Europe who stopped illegals before they got to you. The UK is now a third country and Europe doesn't give a fuck who gets to you. The EU is fighting an illegal war without thinking about how it affects third countries including the UK.

If you don't like it tough. It's the choice you voted for.

This post makes a lot of sense to me.

I think immigrants are lied to about life in the UK. A family saves up to send an adult child here in the hope of a better life and money sent home. That 'better life' isn't quite what was imagined but child has to pretend they're doing great so as not to disappoint family or feel a failure. This lie paints a picture for the next hopeful migrant wanting to make the journey.
