To think The Queen should retire?

ThinWomansBrain · 14/11/2021 21:09

I am not a monarchist - but given that we have a Royal Family....
Given her age, understandably failing health, and the recent widowhood, is it be reasonable to think the Queen should step down and retire gracefully?
OK, maybe stay in post until the Jubillee next year, but then hand over.

@Justheretoaskaquestion91

The comments re speculation over the death of a 95 year old are ridiculous. This isn’t great Granny Susan from across the road; it’s the Queen! Her death will cause huge changes in everyone’s lives. Of course it’s reasonable to speculate about it. It’s not like everyone is rubbing their hands together! I am a massive royalist and I agree with *@DuchessOfDisaster* , I do think there’s a chance she has died. We won’t find out immediately; I read somewhere it will be days before we do due to the enormous amounts of planning that go into the aftermath.
She isn’t dead. When she does it won’t make a huge difference to most of us.
dropitlikeitsloth · 15/11/2021 08:13

Oops I also meant to write, this is apparently the protocol if the Queen does die.

ThinWomansBrain · 15/11/2021 08:14

Isn't there something where if the queen dies on a Sunday they don't announce it till 8am on the Monday?
If there is, it didn't happen - they've just got through to the sports on R4 8am news and not thought to mention it.

@PingedPotato

I hope her family don't see this
Highly doubt Charles is reading this thread 🙄
ThinWomansBrain · 15/11/2021 08:20

dropitlikeitsloth - wow, sounds dodgy as a codeword - could have had some near misses with the terrorist attacks there in recent years Shock

When HM dies, it will be announced.
No-one is going to conceal the death of the head of state.
Charles is regent in all but name as he (and William) have been assuming more responsibility.

PingedPotato · 15/11/2021 08:35

Highly doubt Charles is reading this thread the Queen might be reading herself. I do when I'm too ill to get out and about. (Hi your majesty).

LakieLady · 15/11/2021 08:38

@HalfCakeHalfBiscuit

It is utterly preposterous that in this day and age the head of state of this country is chosen by accident of birth. Hopefully Charles will be so hopeless that it will spell the end of this ridiculous institution
Absolutely agree about it being preposterous.

I also think that, given Charles' track record of trying to influence government policy, he's not going to be neutral in the same way that his mother appears to be. That is a worrying prospect for a supposed democracy.

Yes that’s what I thought maybe there’s a ‘line’ just for these types of announcements or maybe CSs wouldn’t communicate a terror attack it’d be SS. I’d love to know.

Also, on a different tangent, I can’t help but think when Charles is King he’ll be the first Monarch who won’t have postboxes etched with ‘CR’ as no new ones are being made. Stupid I know 🤣

I also heard (doubt if true) but that Charles wouldn’t use the name Charles to avoid linking with the previous King Charleses. I don’t know why, I mean Charles I was executed sure but Charles II was a very popular King apparently. A bit like how King George VI used George not Albert. I guess we’ll find out in our life times.

Naunet · 15/11/2021 08:41

This is all so ageist. She’s a full human being despite her age, with more experience of the role than any other person alive, and can decide for herself when to retire.

gogohm · 15/11/2021 08:43

@monkeysox
No . We had advanced warning regarding the duke of Edinburgh a few weeks before he died that he was in his final illness as they put it, I will have a couple of hours or so's notice before the public announcement as there is a lot of protocol to follow at work ... little of which applied to the duke due to the government restrictions

ThinWomansBrain · 15/11/2021 08:45

dropitlikeitsloth - maybe they's use whatsapp 'secure end to end messaging'?
maybe King Tampon is still his secret wish?

your comment is ridiculous! The queen dying will have v little impact on most people’s lives other than the sycophants and forelock tuggers, who will behave as if their beloved granny has passed away, not some woman they don’t know.
Justheretoaskaquestion91 · 15/11/2021 08:56

I actually think 1) there will be a few days of national mourning which Will directly impact everyone and 2) Prince Charles is going to be a different type of kind. Might not be huge impact but he will be a pain in the arse. And all the money will change 😬

LakieLady · 15/11/2021 08:56

Now that I've seen that Boris Johnson reassured the GBP that the Queen is "very well", I rather suspect she isn't.

Johnson can barely move his lips without lying, so I reckon she may actually be quite poorly.

Yeah it will directly impact everyone for a few days, and then things will go back to normal. How much power do you think Charles will actually have?
ThinWomansBrain · 15/11/2021 09:02

Impact - maybe daily express will move on from Diana conspiracies?

I think you are very wrong. I think there will be huge displays of grief...I think people who aren't even that interested in the Royals will be quite shaken and affected. She's all most of us have known. Don't underestimate the impact her death will have.

It'll only impact people who care about the royals though.

Why would Joe or Jane Bloggs be grieving the Queen? Confused

Aprilx · 15/11/2021 09:37

@monkeysox

I think she has died and they haven't told us. They didn't tell us she'd been in hospital....
Don’t be daft. 🙄

OP, If the Queen wanted to retire / abdicate she could. She hasn’t because she doesn’t want to. Prince Charles has been picking up increased engagements as she steps back for years now. I tend to think that as she has carried on this long, she might as well see it through - so long as she wants to of course.

RustyBear · 15/11/2021 09:40

I don’t know why, I mean Charles I was executed sure but Charles II was a very popular King apparently Yes, but what he's most remembered for is his mistresses...

SickAndTiredAgain · 15/11/2021 09:41

I believe she has died too, and they didn’t want to upstage the remembrance parade today.

You seriously think that Buckingham Palace would gaslight the whole world to that extent?

That isn’t what gaslighting means, that would just be lying.
But no, I think the idea is ridiculous.

Yea she should. There's something wrong with raising your son to have just one job, then keeping it for yourself into your 90s.
