Double bed for a 7 year old

My daughter currently sleeps in a mid sleeper but the ladder is damaged and it’s not very good quality so need to get her a new bed.
Her room is quite big - I’m thinking of getting her a double.
I’m future thinking to when she has sleepovers it’ll be easier. Also I can get in with her to read.

My husband thinks she’s too young.

What do you all think?

It's just a bed. If you can fit one in, get one.

Really don't see the issue?!

If he's really got a problem, get one of those small doubles - more like a single and a half!

ThinWomansBrain · 14/11/2021 19:34

what about one of those truckle beds? still gives an option for sleep overs, but plenty of space for playing/study area as she ges older.

MotherHen0 · 14/11/2021 19:38

I bought DS a double bed after his toddler bed which was around 4.

Although bunk beds look cute. I wanted to invest so I would recommend a double bed along with a good quality mattress and protector.

shouldistop · 14/11/2021 19:39

Why does he think she's too young? It's just a bed.

LassoOfTruth · 14/11/2021 19:39

My four year old has a double because we already had one that we weren’t using when she was ready for a ‘real’ bed. She loves it because she still needs one of us to read her to sleep. Only trouble is I sometimes fall asleep too!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 14/11/2021 19:40

My 8yo has one. Her room is also used for guests as we have no spare bedroom. (She goes in with her sister)

Starcaller · 14/11/2021 19:40

My DD isn't even 3 yet and has a double Grin We got a triple sleeper so it's double on the bottom and a single above.

GiltEdges · 14/11/2021 19:41

DS had a double from 2 when we transitioned him to his own room after co sleeping in with me upto then. Never had any issues. It’s just a bed 🤷🏼‍♀️

whoisit12 · 14/11/2021 19:41

Mine went into a double from their cot bed, they aren't much dearer than a single so why not!!

3scape · 14/11/2021 19:43

My 14 year old has one of those day beds that turns into a double she's had it for a few years. It works for guests or sleep overs or leaves her plenty of space.

Simonjt · 14/11/2021 19:45

My son has a kingsize (my old bed), it means I won’t need to buy him a new bedframe and its great for visitors.

Oddly he thinks she is too young for a larger bed, but old enough to climb a ladder alone in the dark.

Theflamingnerd · 14/11/2021 19:46

DS has had a small double since he was about 3, makes life so much easier

ParkheadParadise · 14/11/2021 19:48

Dd5 has a double bed has done since she came out her cot.
Mind you she's squashed in sharing with 100's of teddies👩‍🦳🦄🐼🐭

Blahdyblahbla · 14/11/2021 19:48

Both my dc have had doubles from toddlerhood, they double up as spares when family stay.

Level75 · 14/11/2021 19:50

Mine has had a king since birth. Its just the bed that we already had in the room that became hers.

JuneOsborne · 14/11/2021 19:51

My DH was weird about this too. I didn't get it at all. Surely, everyone wants the biggest bed they can fit reasonably in a bedroom? No matter your age?!

MinnieMountain · 14/11/2021 19:58

Our 8yo has been in a double bed since he finished with his cot. It was our spare bed and seemed silly to get rid of it.

I’ve just been cuddled up in it reading to him. It’s lovely.

AlwaysLatte · 14/11/2021 19:58

Please think ahead as they will need doubles when they're older. We moved them from a shared room to two other rooms so one each. Took out the doubles in those rooms and put their bunks into one room each. Now they are 13 and 11 and ready for doubles so we have to go and buy them again. I honestly don't know why we didn't just keep the original doubles.

This is what I did after a cot.

I really really regretted it. Should have gone straight to a double bed.

PaperMonster · 14/11/2021 20:00

I had a double bed as a child. I used to hate the fact that I couldn’t get children’s duvet covers - but you can now! I’d go for it!

Sunshinelollypops8 · 14/11/2021 20:03

@Poppets14 my 2 year old has a double bed 😅. Never too young for a donkey bed in my opinion

WinterFirTree · 14/11/2021 20:05

My DS1 went straight into a double from his cot. Because his room was the spare room and had a double. We actually spent ages talking about how we 'ought to' get rid of the double and get a single before realising that this was crazy and a bed is a bed!

It was hugely useful for when he was ill and a parent would go in with him. More comfy for reading bedtime stories.

With DS2 we just bought him a double straight away. If you have the sapce go for it.

Beancounter1 · 14/11/2021 20:11

No matter how big the room, you are still sacrificing floor space.
Your child may prefer more floor space for playing, eg. tents/dens, train layout, twister or other physical games, big imaginative games with lots of teddies/dolls/cars, etc.
I think a child probably needs more floor than bed.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 14/11/2021 20:12

It’s a bed Hmm

Xigris · 14/11/2021 20:12

We have 3 DC and they all have double beds. The younger two had bunk beds but when we did work on the house they got doubles in their new rooms. The youngest is 5. It just seems to make sense. DH’s family are all really tall so it seems obvious to get double beds rather than singles plus we live in the SE so they’ll probably be at home until they’re 30 anyway.
