Double bed for a 7 year old

My daughter currently sleeps in a mid sleeper but the ladder is damaged and it’s not very good quality so need to get her a new bed.
Her room is quite big - I’m thinking of getting her a double.
I’m future thinking to when she has sleepovers it’ll be easier. Also I can get in with her to read.

My husband thinks she’s too young.

What do you all think?

My son coslept then had a double for two years old, it was fine now. He's an adult now and still has a double!

WildExcuses · 14/11/2021 20:17

My kids have had king size beds since they were toddlers. I don’t see the issue.

Anoisagusaris · 14/11/2021 20:18

Mine went from cot to king size!

RonSwansonsChair · 14/11/2021 20:22

If you have the space definitely get a double bed - future proof for when she's older.

user128756 · 14/11/2021 20:27

What is your husbands logic? Because she's smaller she should sleep in a smaller bed?!

My DS has had a king size bed from they moved out of the cot.
Reason being if they are sick/ need us in the night we can sleep beside them keeping them in their own bed and only one of us having disrupted sleep.

Also when they're older we're only having to replace the mattress every 7/8 years.

toastofthetown · 14/11/2021 20:30

Why would you be unreasonable to buy your child a different bed?

Gliderx · 14/11/2021 20:40

Depends whether they'll still have space for playing/studying.

4yo is outgrowing his cot bed now and we're mulling going straight to a king. So useful for guests and if he needs one of us to co-sleep with him.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 14/11/2021 20:44

Ds has had a double from being about 4. He was a terrible sleeper and often needed a long time with one of us to go to sleep so we thought we might as well make ourselves comfortable! The only thing we're finding now is that as we're house hunting it does limit what we can buy, as a double plus the rest of the furniture for a now nine year old takes a lot of space.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 14/11/2021 20:44

I would get a double if there's room.

It will also be handy if the child ever gets ill and you want to sleep in with them. There have been a few times with ill kids when in order to get any sleep I had to squeeze into a single with them. ConfusedGrin

Gliderx · 14/11/2021 20:46

Much nicer for stories/chatting before bed. You can cuddle up cosily with them and then just quietly leave when they're nodding off.

BrilliantBetty · 14/11/2021 20:47

Mine had a double since 5.

Comes in handy if grandparents stay (very rarely!). When they do, they have her room and she comes in with us or her sibling. As we don't have a guest room.

Also good for sleepovers.

PingedPotato · 14/11/2021 20:52

They don't need a double bed so if they like playing on the floor and stuff I wouldn't get one yet. Unless you plan on turfing them out when guests visit. Once they have a double bed they will find it harder to adjust to a single eg on holiday or if you move house. For sleep overs I'd get a decent pull out bed or something? If they go to uni they'll probably be in a single in their halls anyway so it will be a while until they get used to a double

MiniPumpkin · 14/11/2021 21:01

3 year old has small double.. it’s great when she is ill and needing cuddles in the bed.. one of us can just go in instead of her coming into our room. I’d buy it as she will want a double at some point

AwkwardPaws27 · 14/11/2021 21:03

I would have loved a double for sleepovers etc but I shared a room with my much younger brother (8 year gap) so was stuck with a single til I was 18 and had a big enough room in a house share. It was a bit of a squash top-n-tailing with friends!
I left home at 16 but sofa surfed for a while so buying my own double bed was AMAZING! I still have the same frame, but a newer mattress, 14 years later.

PingedPotato · 14/11/2021 21:04

I don't get why a kid needs a double. Unless they are really large.

Tee20x · 14/11/2021 21:07

Too young for a double bed?

Does he think she's going to be bringing back boys from primary to sleep with them in it??

What is his logic

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 14/11/2021 21:15

We started DS with a day bed from ikea with a trickle underneath that turned it into a king size which was useful for sleepovers.
Problem one-he kept falling out of it when it was a single🙄He is the most fidgety thing ever at night!
Problem two-he got used to it being extended with the trickle for sleepovers and asked for it to stay up as it was more comfortable and he didn’t fall out.
Problem three-it was uncomfortable as there was a join between the two single mattresses.

All problems solved when day bed moved into play room as a sofa/spare bed for visitors and he got a proper king size. He’s taller than me and isn’t even a teenager yet🤦‍♀️ He loves it. It’s comfortable. I can get in and read to him or sleep with him if he’s unwell which beats sleeping in the floor!

Helenahandbasketbing · 14/11/2021 21:16

Lucky girl. Do it.

Mustreadabook · 14/11/2021 21:16

I wouldn't unless she has a simply huge room. Floor space for playing, room for a desk, chairs, etc would all be more useful in the future. She won't need a double bed till her boyfriend comes to stay! I can still fit in a single with my 10 year olds to read to them.

kowari · 14/11/2021 21:20

@JuneOsborne

My DH was weird about this too. I didn't get it at all. Surely, everyone wants the biggest bed they can fit reasonably in a bedroom? No matter your age?!
No, I had a single bed as a single adult before having a child. I'd be perfectly happy with a single again, I only have a double as it gives more options if I have people stay. I only use one side of the bed myself. No reason not to get a double if you want one at any age though.
mocktail · 14/11/2021 21:26

Pros and cons really. Kids often like a lot of floor space for playing / dancing / whatever they're into. My daughter has a double but complains about the lack of floor space and wouldn't want to share her bed for a sleepover.

SnackSizeRaisin · 14/11/2021 21:37

I would stick to a single. Otherwise they will end up being unable to sleep in a single bed, or to share a double with someone as they will think they need loads of space. Plus the sheets are easier to change.

xprincessxjanetx · 14/11/2021 21:37

My 10 year old DS has a double, we got it when we was 8.5 but would have sooner if he had a bigger room (we got it when we moved).

ABCDEF1234 · 14/11/2021 21:37

My toddler had once since the age of 2. They think it's great as they can sleep with so many toys

ChuckMater · 14/11/2021 21:39

My ds has had a double bed since age 2. Why does dh think its too young??
