Double bed for a 7 year old

My daughter currently sleeps in a mid sleeper but the ladder is damaged and it’s not very good quality so need to get her a new bed.
Her room is quite big - I’m thinking of getting her a double.
I’m future thinking to when she has sleepovers it’ll be easier. Also I can get in with her to read.

My husband thinks she’s too young.

What do you all think?

My daughter has been in a double since she was 4. She went cot, toddler bed, double bed. She loves it. Plenty of room for us to read bedtime stories and cuddle. Lots of space for the teddy mountain too. Go for it. Especially as it's much easy these days to get children's bedding in doubles.

userisi · 14/11/2021 21:46

My son got a king size bed when he was 9, we decided to upgrade ours to a super king and it seemed silly to get rid as it was quite a good quality one. Still room to play, desk, wardrobe etc so I don't know why you wouldn't. He sleeps right on the edge as the rest of the bed is occupied by cuddly toys!

Snoozer11 · 14/11/2021 22:01

My dad was weird about me getting a double when I was 17. My room was massive.

OnTheBoardwalk · 14/11/2021 22:05

I’ve always gone for the biggest bed in the space you’ve got. If it’s a big room that can fit a double and floor space go for it

In my teens I had a double that fit my room by inches each side. I had to launch myself from the bottom and loved it

Get her a big bed

Helenahandbasketbing · 14/11/2021 23:07

Why is it men are the ones struggling with this, as is evidenced throughout this thread? Is it a sign of a daughter growing up? And a double is generally used for two people and that makes them uncomfortable?? It’s just a bigger bed. Confused

PinkPomeranian · 14/11/2021 23:10

My kids have only ever had king beds. Plenty of room in their bedrooms so why not? Easier for guests, sleepovers, those nights when they need reassurance from us... We've never regretted it.

angelikacpickles · 14/11/2021 23:10

I'm confused - how can a child be "too young" for a double bed? What does he think will happen to her? My DD has always had a double bed because that's what was in her room before we ever had her.

pinkstripeycat · 14/11/2021 23:24

My now 16yr old went from cot to small double bed when he was 18 months old because that’s what we had in the spare room (which became his room) when his sibling was born.
DS16 is still in the same bed (just changed mattress)

Cryalot2 · 14/11/2021 23:27

We had my old queen size bed for ds .
The bigger bed meant less chance of him falling out of it. Also we kept it low. He had plenty of room to move about being a restless sleeper.

Gone are the days of 4 or 5 to a tiny bedroom.

Mypathtriedtokillme · 14/11/2021 23:28

My 4 year old has a double and my 7 year old has a queen.
It means I can snuggle comfortably and read to them or one of use can sleep with them if they are unwell.
The girls have “sleepovers” in each other’s rooms on weekends too.

Simplelobsterhat · 14/11/2021 23:34

@AlwaysLatte

Please think ahead as they will need doubles when they're older. We moved them from a shared room to two other rooms so one each. Took out the doubles in those rooms and put their bunks into one room each. Now they are 13 and 11 and ready for doubles so we have to go and buy them again. I honestly don't know why we didn't just keep the original doubles.
Can I ask why you think 11 and 13 year olds need doubles? Genuine question not being funny. I have a 11yo and 6 yo whose rooms we are planning on revamping and it just hadn't occurred to me to consider, but you say it as if it is inevitable.

I get all the 'nice to haves' like sleepovers and visitors but I slept on a single until 20 i think and i think all my friends did - that's what most uni halls have isn't it?

I understand why people say no such thing as too young, but I would be worried about 'spoiling them' for smaller beds eg on holiday, as a student etc. Also it just takes up more room they could be using to play etc for young kids.

But equally, nothing wrong with a double if you have space and aren't worried about those things.

Skysblue · 14/11/2021 23:42

DD got a double at 8, wish we had done it sooner! So much easier for reading stories etc.

My DH was weird about it too, I think he had it in his head that a double bed is sexy or something 🤷‍♀️🤣 or maybe be just didn’t want the job of assembling it. Once the bed was in and he saw how thrilled DD is he agreed it’s great though.

We got a ‘4 poster’ so can have curtain to block at summer light and she sleeps so much better!

Doodar · 14/11/2021 23:44

my dd has had a double since the age of 5, loves spreading out in it.
she never played in her room, always in the kitchen or sitting room.has a big room anyway.

I was about to post the same as Simplelobsterhat.

(Actually, in my case I think I was sleeping in a bunk bed until I went to university, but I would agree that that's not ideal.)

Chouetted · 14/11/2021 23:52

I'm confused about why tweenagers need doubles. I'm an adult and I sleep in a single. I don't have a partner and I quite like having the extra floor space.

Am I doing something wrong, or what?

MaryAndGerryLivingInDerry · 14/11/2021 23:57

How can you be too young for a double bed? Confused does he think she’ll get lost in it and won’t be able to find her way out?

PurBal · 15/11/2021 00:20

@WinterFirTree

My DS1 went straight into a double from his cot. Because his room was the spare room and had a double. We actually spent ages talking about how we 'ought to' get rid of the double and get a single before realising that this was crazy and a bed is a bed!

It was hugely useful for when he was ill and a parent would go in with him. More comfy for reading bedtime stories.

With DS2 we just bought him a double straight away. If you have the sapce go for it.

This is the same for us. DS has always had a double bed in his room. When we transition from the cot we will rearrange the room (bed against wall) but I’m not getting rid of a perfectly good bed.
toomuchlaundry · 15/11/2021 00:31

Some children must have large bedrooms and not the box rooms to have double beds or king size! Wouldn’t have had room in DS’s room for a double bed and his toys, books, desk etc

WildExcuses · 15/11/2021 00:36

Well people have different sized houses so yes, some kids have bigger bedrooms than others. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Mummyrowland · 15/11/2021 01:11

Get one saves money in long run

TempNameChangexx · 15/11/2021 01:28

If there is enough room in her bedroom just get it - I got my son a kingsize as soon as he outgrew his cabin bed

NotMyCat · 15/11/2021 01:55

My friends 4yo is in a double! He needed a new bed and is also going to be tall (he's about 4ft now) so they figured just get a double rather than having to buy twice

PrimeraVez · 15/11/2021 02:50

All three of mine have moved into either a King or a Super King from their cot at around 18 months. We put the beds up against a wall on one side and have a long bed rail on the other, so they can’t fall out.

So much more convenient for co-sleeping, morning cuddles, sleepovers, guests that sleep over etc!

SirenSays · 15/11/2021 03:20

I was given a choice between a double bed or a single bed and a nice sofa bed. I chose the sofa.

Marvellousmadness · 15/11/2021 05:13

How can you be too young for a bigger bed?!
