Eurgh Wine O'clock

stopwiththewineoclock · 12/11/2021 16:59

I'm in some semi professional fb groups to do with my career. Lots of mums in there who constantly relate everything to having a drink.

Endless posts about "is it too soon for gin"? Or pictures with those enormous glasses of wine that say just one glass. The whole Christmas party is about wine.

Does anyone else find this annoying?

OP posts:
SickAndTiredAgain · 12/11/2021 17:56

I don’t drink alcohol anymore, and have never drink coffee, and I see these wine/gin/prosecco related things as similar to the “hilarious” coffee ones about how no one should dare speaking to you before you’ve had your coffee. It doesn’t massively annoy me, but I don’t think they are ever funny or original.

GTAlogic · 12/11/2021 17:56

It doesn't really bother me. I am not teetotal but I don't drink very much alcohol at all, and my dad is an alcoholic, but I don't find these memes tedious or annoying or anything. I just let them wash over me. I think it's less a case of that person always drinking to excess or relying on alcohol to get through the day and more to do with them wanting to join in and using the posts as a way of expressing themselves and how stressful their day has been in a way that others can relate to. At least, that's how it seems with the people I know who post about this.

PraxisandHypatia · 12/11/2021 18:00

Extremely annoying (and boring).

Justheretoaskaquestion91 · 12/11/2021 18:04

they’re the kind of people who confuse liking a drink with having a personality

I find it particularly wtf on my son’s nursery WhatsApp group, but then i don’t think it’s funny to get drunk when you have small children at home (my mother was an alcoholic)

Justheretoaskaquestion91 · 12/11/2021 18:05

@Jabvribt

I have only noticed since having children how ridiculous the drinking culture is in this country. Sad young children stuck in pubs all the time and parents thinking it’s fine to have 3 bottles of wine with lunch etc. Made to feel mental if you aren’t drinking when out and about.

letsfightlikechickens · 12/11/2021 18:09

That Hurrah for gin shite has a lot to answer for

Pippi1970 · 12/11/2021 18:10

I love wine and a vodka and soda, but what is annoying is thst all the birthday cards for youngish women seem to have booze references and it makes it very difficult when I'm buying a card for my dsis who is finally sober after years of heavy drinking!

BiscuitLover09876 · 12/11/2021 18:12

I like wine, but considering how many people I know with alcohol addiction (some still in denial), I find it an unfortunate part of our culture.

Annasgirl · 12/11/2021 18:27

I find all of the marketing of alcohol (especially gin and wine) to women very annoying. I work in marketing, and had an alcoholic DF, so I understand how it works!!! The placing of wine in TV series and movies and books as “aspirational” for successful women is really cringe. But it has succeeded, and we now have a generation of professional women with huge alcohol issues - alcohol has a much more profound effect on women in terms of negative health problems.

And all these bloody SM posts and mugs and tat push me to the edge of screaming!

nc198567 · 12/11/2021 18:30

Yes it's so annoying and not funny.

I've never craved a drink at the end of the day to "take the edge off". I just don't get it.

Fomomofo · 12/11/2021 18:32

I don't know, aren't all other peoples addictions and habits annoying in some way? Fags, cakes, chocolate

Fomomofo · 12/11/2021 18:32

Etc

nc198567 · 12/11/2021 18:36

Yes but there aren't constant posts on SM like "tough day with the kids, is it bedtime yet so I can stuff my face with a family bag of maltesers"

GlamorousHeifer · 12/11/2021 18:39

Well I'm sat here with a glass of wine, yes I will probably drink too much tonight by MN standards and have done as my children have grown up. It certainly doesn't mean they had to clean up after me in the morning though (perfectly capable of doing any cleaning myself thanks) and to the poster that struggled finding a birthday card for her sister with no reference to alcohol....pull the other one! There are loads Hmm
If you don't particularly like the alcohol references in the group that's your perogative, I'm sure you post things that annoy others but as they are undoubtedly more wholesome I'm sure that won't have crossed your mind.

The female equivalent of the lager lout

sHREDDIES19 · 12/11/2021 18:48

It’s really only a light hearted joke. I try not to let things this low level annoy or irritate me.

There are endless cards with flowers, teddies, scenery, jokes and plenty of other stuff on cards To say they're all full of booze is just ridiculous. I don't think I've ever bought one about booze
Spiceup · 12/11/2021 18:50

I like a drink, but I wouldn't be telling people I want any professional respect from that I'm looking forward to Friday, let alone the Friday night beer even though I am

DroopyClematis · 12/11/2021 18:53

Love a glass of wine ( or more!) and I couldn't get her up at a modern phrase like 'wine o'clock.'

It's just a modern phrase like 'making memories , live laugh, love, Santa stop here!'

I don't care for these phrases and they make me cringe. But some people find resonance with them.

Bloody hell....I can't agree more......

Please can people stop looking for an issue.....🤦🤦🤦

Cheers 👍🍷

@Chikapu

I find it a bit cringe, so many people having a cheeky prosecco or a cheeky gin, what's cheeky about it? Just admit you can't make it through the day without alcohol and have done.
Who said they couldn’t make it through the day? They enjoy a drink. I’m sure there’s something you talk about looking forward to. Everyone is so self righteous on this thread.
Rainbowunicorn76 · 12/11/2021 18:59

Yes I find it a bit annoying too. I drink occasionally but am not fussed about it at all. I hate the whole narrative around alcohol that says you can't have/be fun if you don't drink.
I once went to a hen party where two younger girls (early 20's) chose to drink moderately so that they'd be hangover free and able to get up early ish and explore the city.
I was stunned at the amount of "they really need to get a life" annoyed type comments made at them.

LesterKnopf · 12/11/2021 19:04

YANBU My brother recently died from complications due to alcoholism even though he had been sober for a year. The constant normalisation of excessive drinking, needing alcohol to relax or destress etc just hide the devastating long term effects and make it harder for addicts to acknowledge their problem and give up.

RockNRollMartian · 12/11/2021 19:07

Yes, it's annoying. However, I also know someone who tries to fetishise seltzer and spreadsheets.

Moral: Anything can be made annoying with enough effort. Wine/gin, coffee, bacon, even seltzer and spreadsheets. Hmm
