So I've been lucky to have the last 2 off.
We are short staffed so I was expecting it and don't mind too much.
Anyone else know their rota yet and is it fair.?

Christmas day isn't compulsory in my job luckily but I have worked Christmases and they've been fun but since having children and while they're so young, I won't be working another Christmas day.

itsutterlyshit · 11/11/2021 19:48

I'm down to be working for the 10th year in a row, maybe even longer.

I mind a lot, as the assumption is I'll work to let parents have the day off. Im waiting to hear if I'm getting it off after I complained. It's not looking promising.

cookiemon666 · 11/11/2021 19:50

I'm working boxing day and all of new year. I'm a nurse so it doesn't really bother me

sofakingcool · 11/11/2021 19:52

DS is a waiter and he doesn't know his hours yet - all he knows is staff are expected to work christmas or new year, and as a party loving 18 year old he's keen to keep NYE free Grin

Also double pay which he's thrilled about!

That's terrible. 10 years in a row is horribly unfair. Can you kick up a fuss?

Jeez that's awful!

I used to work at a day nursery that ran all year round, fortunately obviously closed Christmas Day/Boxing Day

We had the same member of staff who would always want 23rd- 2nd off, demanding she needed time with her child (didn't we all?!). She'd literally come back in Jan and book the next Christmas off!

Luckily our spineless manager left, and a new one started and made rules about booking time off

DeepaBeesKit · 11/11/2021 20:01

Just to say thank you to all of you who work these shifts.

Sitting in hospital with DD on Christmas Eve crossing everything we would get discharged in time really drove it home to me how selfless you lot are, year after year.

Chillyjellytotty · 11/11/2021 20:03

I am off this year, I have worked previous years though (nhs) everyone put when they would like to work and if enough people put names down people don’t have to work what they don’t want to (within reason). I try to work New Years.

WhatIsThisPlease · 11/11/2021 20:03

DP is working all Christmas Eve and Christmas Day and then on nights on Boxing Day.

I'm really sad about it Sad

Yogawankonobi · 11/11/2021 20:08

I’m working (I’ve had one Christmas off in 6 years). I don’t mind although would obviously rather be at home with my family. We try to make it as nice as we can for patients and their families.
Luckily I’m off on Boxing Day so we will celebrate then.

icedcoffees · 11/11/2021 20:10

I run my own business now and close for two weeks over Christmas.

Previously I worked jobs that meant being in on Christmas Eve and Boxing Day, but never Christmas Day itself.

I hated it and purposefully decided to close my business to give myself that time off, guaranteed, each year.

EileenGC · 11/11/2021 20:14

I’m not working Christmas Day, but I have to be up in the early hours of the 26th to catch a flight to where I’m working that following week. I’m then working until the evening of the 31st and I was going to work 1st Jan too but it was cancelled a couple of days ago… could still be reinstated in the next month or so, so I don’t really know yet.

I’m in performing arts and 90% of my colleagues are working most of those 2 weeks, someone has to put on all the shows and concerts people like going to during the holidays Grin

Dandymax1 · 11/11/2021 20:17

My DH was high rank in the army, he was lucky n got home for Xmas, he then worked for a company that closed for Xmas, he has now taken a job by request, he is working all of christmas. We love his job n yes it changes ALOT but Christmas is Christmas.

Iamclearlyamug · 11/11/2021 20:17

I’m working Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day of my own free will because I’m a massive Scrooge and would frankly be happy if Christmas was cancelled forever 😂😂 I’ve offered all my clients every day and they’ve all accepted, so I get a major financial boost whilst avoiding the most overrated time of year - win win 🤣🤣

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 11/11/2021 20:18

Ours isn't out officially yet, but from what I gather, I'm on 8-8 Christmas Eve, Christmas Day is 8-2pm or 2-8pm, off Boxing Day. I moved the Christmas dinner over to Boxing Day and my adults kids and partners will come by then.

MrsMonkeyBear · 11/11/2021 20:18

I use to work Christmas day (Hospitality) but since I've had kids I've not worked one in 7 years. But I do work Christmas Eve, Boxing Day and both NYE and 1st Jan (2nd too in Scotland) without any fuss or arguments.

My boss pretty much know I only ask for 2 major holidays off, Mothers Day and Christmas day. I work pretty much anything else that's thrown at me.

MissTrip82 · 11/11/2021 20:18

Yes, I am. A run of days over Christmas then onto nights.

It’s the one time I wished we worked shorter hours (shifts are at least 12 hrs). A few hours to see family would be lovely.

One of us always works Christmas, we work in specialties that are staffed the same 24/7 so no escaping it.

LemonViolet · 11/11/2021 20:20

9-5, but have had 2 christmases off and no other bank hols all year, so fairs fair. Got our rotas about 3 weeks ago. It’s emergency appointments only, so people are only there if they really need to be and glad that you’re they’re for them, and amongst our team there’s usually a pretty upbeat atmosphere with Christmas songs playing and silly hats/sparkly accessories etc unless a really serious/sad case comes in and it’s not appropriate. I’ll join DP and his family in the evening.

DaphneDeloresMoorhead · 11/11/2021 20:20

I work a rolling shift pattern of 2 earlies, 2 lates, 2 nights abd 4 days off. Christmas falls on my last night shift this year. I'm working the next 6 years lol

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 11/11/2021 20:22

@nonevernotever

I'm on call that week so may be. Quite happy either way.
Me too I volunteered to be on call. Saves me a lot of family aggro.
DaphneDeloresMoorhead · 11/11/2021 20:22

And Christmas is very unpredictable for us, it could be dead quiet or I could walk into a murder/fatal RTC. I work as a radio operator (or controller to those in the know) in the police

Changechangychange · 11/11/2021 20:23

I am, and I’m not ecstatic, but will hopefully be able to skip off early (will be on call from home).

I am doing the entire Christmas week, so will be in every day, can’t have any alcohol, and can’t be further than 20mins from the hospital between 24/12 and 31/12. So new year is also fucked.

EachandEveryone · 11/11/2021 20:25

I have it off but I do feel bad because I had it off last year and really wasn’t expecting it this year. My family are up North so of course I couldn’t go then. I have three days off so it will be a quick turnaround.

I’ve never minded working it but think it’s only fair to take it in turns which is why I request it every other year.

Obsidiansphere · 11/11/2021 20:26

This will be the first time in 5 years dh and I are both off! 👏

YellowandGreenToBeSeen · 11/11/2021 20:26

I worked last Christmas and would give my right arm to do so again!

I’m not a fan of the day & it’s £30 an hour but the ‘overtime’ or additional hours go into a lottery with all who are interested. Fingers crossed!
