If it wasn't bad enough, Johnson presiding over the Paterson vote last week ...

He's now refusing to attend the debate today on sleaze/corruption

He also will not allow the sleaze watchdog to look into his flat refurbishment.

Does Johnson actually think this kind of behaviour is impressive?

I find it deeply embarrassing.

You are certainly a Tory automaton.

My interest, as always when I contribute to this kind of debate, is accuracy

So is it influence peddling, dereliction of duty or corruption, then? I must've missed your response upthread. And the Chief Whip/other ministers/blond clown facilitating this abuse of office? Let me guess, there are more special rules that we don't know about, for these very special, uncorrupt people.

Cox is just the one we know about. Boris says it's all fine, which obviously means the complete opposite.

So any reasonable person would deduce that many more Tories have also got their snouts in the trough.

Which Labour MPs do have business acumen?

Irrelevant, silly question. Are you in fact a bot, as pp suggested?

I voted for the Greens in a General Election once. Wink

Certainly not.

Roussette · 10/11/2021 19:29

Which Labour MPs do have business acumen?

Maybe they're too busy serving their constituents? Just a thought.

Hearing Johnson today at COP insisting that anyone breaking the rules must be punished. Yet only last week he was telling his MPs to vote against doing that with OP.
He makes my blood boil.

whenthedoveslie · 10/11/2021 19:34

Ashamed no, aghast and disgusted yes.

Brexit and the subsequent 2019 Tory victory meant I stopped all UK based charitable contributions. I encouraged my remaining labour voting family to do the same. I am glad they did.

The country got what the majority asked for. People reach their limits and it is only logical that they then decide to only care for their own - much like the nasty party that we are ruled by.

It is a harsh stance but I don't care. So many didn't care about my children's future, so I don't care about theirs.

whenthedoveslie · 10/11/2021 19:38

Clavinova, you are a long standing copy paste joke.

Clearly bored.. though maybe not. But few could take you seriously. Dear.

Colleen92 · 10/11/2021 19:47

The first thing he - they, the Tories - did at the start of the pandemic and first lockdown was hand out £10k to every sponging old twat in The House of Lords, as they "needed laptops to work from home". Amazing how few people seem to know or acknowledge this.
Free meals for starving children on the poverty line and below? Nah. They really needed that £10k each. I'm quite sure none of them could afford a laptop without it. Clearly didn't all have top of the range tech at home already. Just abhorrent.

I find it quite irritating that Blair is named every time someone wants to roast Labour. He was NOT Labour, not really. He was a dirty little conman that saw a way to get to power if he claimed to be on the side of the people. That was why he was all, "New.. right.. Shiny.. etc." Saying "same old right wing shite" would not have gone down as well, would it? He claimed to have Labour ideology but he didn't. Can't really blame Labour for his lies and war mongering, not entirely. Not the same thing in my opinion.

I didn't see any posts asking me that, but I haven't read the entire thread.

As far as I can see, Cox is not accused of influence peddling. On the information I've read, he simply worked as a very well paid lawyer whilst also being an MP. If you have evidence that he lobbied the government on behalf of his clients or similar I would be interested. Paterson did but I haven't seen anything that says Cox did.

We know that more Conservatives have well paid second jobs than MPs on the opposition benches. Not sure how much of that is down to opportunity given that Conservative MPs who have followed other careers before entering politics are more likely to have been in highly paid professions than MPs from other parties.

I'm not sure about the House of Lords, but MPs were able to claim up to £10k reimbursement for laptops to enable their staff to WFH. They weren't just all handed £10k. They'd have had to provide receipts/invoices.
Clavinova · 10/11/2021 20:07

April 2020 -

Misleading claims are spreading on social media that MPs are “awarding themselves £10,000 extra expenses” in order to work from home...

Labour’s Wes Streeting: “Just to reassure people, MPs aren’t being ‘given £10,000 extra each’. There is a contingency budget for office equipment because not all of our staff working from home have their own IT equipment. It is there if – and only if – it is needed.”

@Clavinova

Are you in fact a bot, as pp suggested?

Certainly not.

So why do you post like one then?

prhbridge47 it was in response to you saying Cox wasn't corrupt, then you said if he was unduly using his influence it would be corruption; I then said no that'd be influence peddling.

Anyway it doesn't matter, there'll be another slimeball exposed very shortly, I'm sure. There are probably quite a few Tory tax haven millions just waiting to be discovered.

And yes OP I am ashamed of being British at this point in time. In fact I have the exact same kind of sick fury I felt when living in Italy under Berlusconi. BJ and him operate in a very similar way, the lies are just spectacular.

The UK needs its own 5Star movement, or at least a completely new party.

Roussette · 10/11/2021 20:34

Well.... it now comes to light Cox earned £6million whilst sitting as an MP.
And he has an undeclared stake in a tax avoidance scheme that has been investigated by tax officials.

I am not sure he is going to last because this gets worse and worse.

His constituency has unemployment and average earnings are below the national average.

ChurchofLatterDayPaints · 10/11/2021 20:43

But Roussette, does one not marvel at the ungrateful serfs of Torridge! Not appreciating that they have a Highly Experienced Queen's Counsel as their MP.

That was apparently the sentiment in Cox's comment, which I cba to link but am sure is still out there.

DuncinToffee · 10/11/2021 20:48

Poor diddums

bylinetimes.com/2021/11/10/conservative-mps-furious-boris-johnson-corruption-scandal-second-jobs/

Conservative MPs have told Byline Times they are furious with how Boris Johnson has handled the corruption crisis engulfing their Government and believe his attempts to save Owen Paterson will now lead to an inevitable crackdown on their own second jobs.

Roussette · 10/11/2021 20:50

Church
Yes, his statement is almost saying 'they should be very grateful for having me as their MP'

Here...
"Cox says electors decide whether or not to pick a ‘senior and distinguished professional’ who maintains his second job"

I hate it when people talk about themselves in the third person!

Note the real concern crawling out - not the appalling handling per se, but their own selfish interests

Somehow I doubt anyone will be surprised ...

@Katyppp

The problem is, MN is not representative of the UK. You will gets endless posters on here, agreeing with you and trying to outdo each other on how much they hate the Tories, are in real lifeashamed of our Government, sorry for people they consider to have been shafted by the Tories etc etc etc. In real life, things are a lot more nuanced and lots of the issues considered very important on MN hardly raise an eyebrow. The Tories were voted in last time and they will be voted in again, until Labour have a credible offering that people can relate to, not just spend all their time (over) reacting, finger-pointing and name calling. Actually setting out what they would actually do in a given situation instead of just going on about how awful the Tories are and evading questions woykd be a good start.
And the vitriol and abuse hurled at anyone who could possibly vote Tory. It's already there on the first page above your post. Basically saying that Tory voters are racist or lack morals. So why would you want any Tory voters to vote Labour if they are such awful people? Abuse like this is one of the reasons I think twice about voting Labour.

I am a bit of a floating voter, so not a dyed in the wool Conservative by any means. My choices these days are between parties which are all deeply flawed. I am now politically homeless with no where to put my cross. Never thought that I would have to spoil my ballot paper, but it seems that's where we are now.

knittingaddict · 11/11/2021 07:44

And I despise Boris Johnson.
