Neighbours cooking us alive ….

We live in a freezing but lovely townhouse/tenement /high ceiling, bay but single glazed flat.
It’s been freezing since Before Time
Heating is rubbish and often wear layers to keep warm/survive

About 3 months ago : we got new downstairs neighbours

They did a lot of building work and at first , we thought by the heat and the noise- that they were drying plaster or similar with industrial heaters of some sort ?
Turns out no: they are just from a much warmer country and have their heating on 24/7 !?

My eyeballs are drying out. It’s like a Sahara now
I’ve windows open constantly , but at least my washing dries quickly …

Is it even SAFE to have heating on 24/7? What kind of heating rattles a whole room? My cats are just lying in pools on the floor!

AIBU - you’ll age by dehydration, your cats will eventually jump out of the wide open windows , the noise will drive you mad , it’s bad for the environment
YABU- enjoy the heat ,for once - make a cocktail chillax, throw away your onesies as you won’t need them this winter.

@TheOccupier

This is a total win. Redecorate your flat in the style of a tiki bar or some other tropical paradise and enjoy it while it lasts. I imagine once the neighbours get their first gas bill they will change their habits.
Loving this idea!

The heat would be my worst nightmare OP. Since menopause I’ve become intolerant to heat.

Nevermindthesquirrels · 08/11/2021 09:42

I think you're better off reporting to the police. The vibration make me think fans.
We have upstairs neighbours that are Jamaican. We never ever have the heating on and our flat is toasty as they also heat the hallway.
We never ever have vibration noise though

Horst · 08/11/2021 09:42

Overly hot, vibrations coming up to your flat.

Money is on a grow. You won’t smell it for ages. Windows will likely be well covered up to stop the light escaping.

We have caught people in the allotments growing weed before “oh is it I didn’t know must of come in with the tomatoes compost” council falls for it silly sods.

@DaisyNGO @peridito
Which is why I thought they were industrial! Shock

I actually DID go down to check if they were A: builders B: leaving the premises at night, and they wee guy spoke no English
Later that evening , the older man appears and ( not unkindly) asked why I was after- I repeated “just making sure yous aren’t leaving at night , you re heating is very loud “
Neighbour, gesturing to Teen “he is from XXX he is cold”

Omg it’s weed, isn’t it Shock I think despite living in a city , I’m quite naive here lol.

You shouldn't be getting noise unless they're using blow fans. I'd be tempted to report anonymously to Crimestoppers online, to be honest, just in case. You don't want the flat to catch fire....... and they could also be using your electricity! Can you read your meter?

Laufeythejust · 08/11/2021 09:45

My first thought was cannabis grow too. I’d definitely pop round to introduce yourself and have a nosy. Fire risk is high if it is. A house on my street set on fire after a tenant turned it into a cannabis farm and it was a wonder no one was injured. The entire street was high though Grin

PeeAche · 08/11/2021 09:47

When I was a youth, I had a floppy haired boyfriend that drove a Peugeot 106 with a sub woofer in the boot. Naturally, he grew cannabis in the corner of his bedroom. It didn't make it that hot at all. Maybe increased the temp by about 2 degrees and it was fairly pleasant. Also the lamps are often not on all the time.

Although, if they had like 10 tents, I'm sure it would get really hot!

Anyway, when it starts "budding" it stinks so you'll soon know!

TabithaTumbler · 08/11/2021 09:51

I'd be very worried about a fire. I think I'd report them anonymously too.

Sorry OP but a teenager being left alone could also be trafficking. Is teh XXX Vietnam?

SeenYourArse · 08/11/2021 09:52

It will absolutely be a cannabis grow! It won’t smell yet until it gets much bigger and is getting ready to harvest, enjoy the free heat whilst it lasts!

Wbeezer · 08/11/2021 09:53

A lot of cannabis farms are manned by Vietnamese people, often young people who've been people smuggled.
We had one in a detached house in our naice village so they pop up everywhere. The operators were a bit naive to think no one would notice, its curtain twitcher central round here.

VickyPollardsTracksuit · 08/11/2021 09:53

@LibrariesGiveUsPower45321

Are they growing wacky backy?
My first thought too. That chucks off some heat.
Embroidery · 08/11/2021 09:54

My heating is on 24/7 too.
I maintain a temperature of 21 using a thermostat.
Your days of freezing purgatory are becoming anarchic.

Horst · 08/11/2021 09:54

Yeah the old man who speaks English well enough to know what your asking with a young teen who clearly wasn’t speaking from another country with the heat and vibration. It’s looking worse and worse tbh.

DaisyStiener · 08/11/2021 09:57

@sashh no it did cross my mind , but it’s just one sad skinny teen. I don’t suppose he would one brought him up to me unless he thought I was soliciting earlier ? Shock
No weird door activity ( my bedrooms above the hall/close door) so not like in/out all day. Opposite: barely see or hear them ! Hence why I thought they left of an evening
This is a nice area and there are 8 flats in my block. But I suppose these things do happen.

VickyEadieofThigh · 08/11/2021 09:58

Growing cannabis was my first thought, too.

Trixiefirecracker · 08/11/2021 09:58

I think it’s super unhealthy to have your house at 21 degrees constantly. Would shrivel me up. Especially at night. You need some fresh air and germs love the heat! 😂

DaisyStiener · 08/11/2021 09:59
  • not Vietnam ( is that right enough?) but Eastern European country. Which I didn’t know was “hot”’
OP posts:
BigRedDuck · 08/11/2021 09:59

Yep. Grow farm. Many plausible heating explanations but the vibrations are not right.
Report it to 101. Enjoy the free heating for now though (but do check your meter readings and smoke alarms).

Embroidery · 08/11/2021 09:59

I have no cannabis! That's such a ridicuous thing to say.
I just dont like jumpers, hate breathing cold air (apart from when in parks or on rambles), wear t shirts and shorts at home, often bare foot all year round. Coldness indoors makes me sneeze.
It's much cheaper than wine, or jumpers to actually heat your home. £2 a day. Bargain! And no bulky jumpers to mess up the place.

EerieSilence · 08/11/2021 10:03

Enjoy the free heating and when you're planning a party or feeling down, knock on their door with some brownies or a bottle of wine - you might get some goodies in return.

If they are just growing there won’t be lots of comings and goings.

The ‘gardener’ who is at the bottom of the pile and dispensable if things go wrong never leaves the property. There will be the odd visit from the next one in line.

Horst · 08/11/2021 10:04

The lad will be living there so purely grow the plants if it’s a grow abs to make sure nobody breaks in to steal them.

ChristmasGrogu · 08/11/2021 10:04

Jesus 23 in your flat from below?
Without a doubt it’s a farm, call to the police today. Must be nuclear in there to heat you to 23!

DaisyStiener · 08/11/2021 10:05

Ok I’ve just googled it and The country is also cold AF in the winter !?
Omg I’m going to end up on Neighbours From Hell aren’t I? Shock
DaisySteiner and her family were enjoying some free heating for the winter Little did they know that DOWNSTAIRS…
