Neighbours cooking us alive ….

We live in a freezing but lovely townhouse/tenement /high ceiling, bay but single glazed flat.
It’s been freezing since Before Time
Heating is rubbish and often wear layers to keep warm/survive

About 3 months ago : we got new downstairs neighbours

They did a lot of building work and at first , we thought by the heat and the noise- that they were drying plaster or similar with industrial heaters of some sort ?
Turns out no: they are just from a much warmer country and have their heating on 24/7 !?

My eyeballs are drying out. It’s like a Sahara now
I’ve windows open constantly , but at least my washing dries quickly …

Is it even SAFE to have heating on 24/7? What kind of heating rattles a whole room? My cats are just lying in pools on the floor!

AIBU - you’ll age by dehydration, your cats will eventually jump out of the wide open windows , the noise will drive you mad , it’s bad for the environment
YABU- enjoy the heat ,for once - make a cocktail chillax, throw away your onesies as you won’t need them this winter.

Free heat! Worth it given the prices are doubling.....

If it's too dry, leave water out - I used to put a mug of water on my bedroom radiator at night.

DaisyNGO · 08/11/2021 08:59

@DaisyStiener

Ha haaaaa *@Longdistance* *@LibrariesGiveUsPower45321* well we DID wonder but surely the smell wouod be as obvious as the heat???
I thought not at the growing stage.

Seriously, what's the temp in your flat?

AnyFucker · 08/11/2021 08:59

Grow house Smile

Aderyn21 · 08/11/2021 09:00

I would just say to make sure your heating supplies and therefore bills are totally separate. I’ve never lived anywhere where a neighbour’s heating could make my house warm, so check it’s all working as it should. Other than that I’d make the most of free heat

RoseMartha · 08/11/2021 09:01

My downstairs neighbour has her heat on all the time in the winter. It means mine only usually clicks on in the morning or when we are having a very cold spell. Kept my bill down tbh.

DaisyStiener · 08/11/2021 09:02

@Aderyn21 mines is on a pay meter
@DaisyNGO I’ve left the baby’s gro egg in the living room for a bit to see!

We had this once, pretty certain it wasn't a cannabis farm it was an elderly lady, after 2 years of it we had to move it was miserable. We were living like nudist!

PissyMum · 08/11/2021 09:03

They’ve got to be growing cannabis for the heating in your flat to be that effected. You would smell as they’re growing it, not smoking it. It only develops the smell after a few months and even then they could just pick it, bag it up quickly and start growing again. Even if they’re not growing using such an insane amount of heating could well alert the authorities who may come round anyway.

BackBackBack · 08/11/2021 09:04

Wait until they get the first gas bill. If the heating still doesn't go down after that, then I suspect it's a grow house.

EdgeOfTheSky · 08/11/2021 09:06

Yay! Free heating!

You don’t need to buy and pay to run a humidifier, just put a bowl of water on the floor.

EdgeOfTheSky · 08/11/2021 09:08

Or they have illegally connected to someone else’s supply…. Possibly the OP’s!
AutumnAnn · 08/11/2021 09:09

I'd be thrilled, our home is freezing and loses heat so quickly

Mammy55 · 08/11/2021 09:09

We had this exact situation and they wasn’t growing anything however they did end up moving out because they couldn’t afford the heating bill!

theDudesmummy · 08/11/2021 09:11

God I would hate this so much, I am always hot (menopausal) unless it is actually very cold!

starfishmummy · 08/11/2021 09:12

I'm a cold person so I'd enjoy the free heat! But like pp my first thought was cannabis farm.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 08/11/2021 09:14

I wouldn’t like it. I have skin conditions and having the heating on too much, especially in the evening, plays havoc with them.

SheWoreYellow · 08/11/2021 09:14

Good point about keeping an eye on your own meter readings.

TheCanyon · 08/11/2021 09:16

Can we house swap? My heating been on full blast for 4 hours and I'm still freezing. Enjoy the cheap bills Smile

iwannabelikeyouhoohoo · 08/11/2021 09:18

God I’d hate that. I like my house as cold as my stone heart. Poor DH lives in two jumpers but luckily the children have inherited my Arctic preferences. Won’t humidifiers just make it feel like Butterfly World?!

Frescoed · 08/11/2021 09:18

We lived in a terraced house a few years ago. When our elderly next door neighbour died it was bought by someone who did a bit of work, and then appeared to live there but only came and went at peculiar times. It was a cannbis farm, and we found out when the people who lived on the other side knocked on our door on a Sunday morning to say that they thought the house between us was on fire. It was, some kind of electrical fire (caused either by the kit in there or by the owners trying to bypass the electric metre they thought).

LucentBlade · 08/11/2021 09:18

When DH and I first dated he shared an office with two other junior academics. One was from India and one was from Malaysia. They bought in extra heaters and the office was like the hot house at Kew Gardens.

TasteTheMeatNotTheHeat · 08/11/2021 09:20

When I lived in the UK we spent an extortionate amount on heating in the winter months! I would have loved free heating. Stop moaning and get your summer dress on.

Irishfarmer · 08/11/2021 09:22

What did the temp reading say? I lived in an old house converted into flats, they didn't have the ability to bill us individually for heat, it was very old and oil, so it was just included in the price of the rent. It was annoying sometimes if I was cooking a big dinner in our tiny kitchen with the heating going full blast, the window would need to be open in the middle of winter.

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 08/11/2021 09:22

@HappySantasaurus

Yay, free heating! Grin
Hell yes! I can't seeing it continuing, so enjoy it while you can. Bills are rising, so I figure they'll drop the temperature soon enough
thisplaceisweird · 08/11/2021 09:23

I also thought weed farm as a first thought. Worth knocking on the door and just saying hi, dropping that you're grateful they're keeping you lovely and warm! See what they say.. maybe they don't realise and they're cold, it's just all going to the ceiling?
