Neighbours cooking us alive ….

We live in a freezing but lovely townhouse/tenement /high ceiling, bay but single glazed flat.
It’s been freezing since Before Time
Heating is rubbish and often wear layers to keep warm/survive

About 3 months ago : we got new downstairs neighbours

They did a lot of building work and at first , we thought by the heat and the noise- that they were drying plaster or similar with industrial heaters of some sort ?
Turns out no: they are just from a much warmer country and have their heating on 24/7 !?

My eyeballs are drying out. It’s like a Sahara now
I’ve windows open constantly , but at least my washing dries quickly …

Is it even SAFE to have heating on 24/7? What kind of heating rattles a whole room? My cats are just lying in pools on the floor!

AIBU - you’ll age by dehydration, your cats will eventually jump out of the wide open windows , the noise will drive you mad , it’s bad for the environment
YABU- enjoy the heat ,for once - make a cocktail chillax, throw away your onesies as you won’t need them this winter.

The more I read, the more it screams cannabis farm.

You can contact the police online these days, and no they don't tell them who contacted them / tipped them off. Farms being raided is just an occupational hazard to these gangs.

Clocktopus · 08/11/2021 10:15

I bet a lot of you on this thread also reminded the teacher when she forgot to collect your homework 😂 why can’t you just let people live!

But in this case it is looking like a teen is potentially being trafficked and kept as a farmer. I wouldn't want to let that slide.

WeRTheOnesWeHaveBeenWaitingFor · 08/11/2021 10:16

I’d move ASAP. It’s not safe but I’d be reluctant to get involved.

steppemum · 08/11/2021 10:16

@Helloise

Unless you have evidence that they are also exploiting a few trafficked people to mind their alleged cannabis plants, PLEASE mind your own business and leave the police out of it. A few home grown marijuana plants is the absolute definition of a victimless crime and may well replace a few ounces of the less-ethically-grown kind- so, not just victimless but an actual good deed.

If you actually are bothered by the free heating then speak to them. They might not realise how much is leaking out (weed plants or no weed plants) and they could look at some better insulation.

growing a few cannabis plants does not require industrial fans and super heating. that is a cannabis farm.

Whatever your opinion on the legalisation or otherwise of cannabis, typically cannabis farms are illegally tapping into utilities, and are therefore quite dangerous.
Living in a flat above one with kids and pets is putting OP at risk.

And how exactly is she supposed to get evidence of trafficking?

If it's a "few" home grown plants and everyone's happy and the neighbours are just ridiculously well off and don't mind literally burning tenners on their gas bill, then the NCA aren't going to be round with a door rammer and tasers are they?

OTOH for OP's flat to be heated to 23 from the property below, it must be absolutely tropical. And there is one young person in there - which is a classic red flag for a cannabis farm and human trafficking/modern slavery. I don't think it's ethically or morally right to "mind your own business".

Lovely attitude towards modern slavery there.
Nevermindthesquirrels · 08/11/2021 10:18

That teen in there should be at school. Not manning a weed farm, probably getting himself unwell sitting in heat like that.

You can

Live chat 101. Email or phone.

You could also ring crime stoppers.

Not necessarily. My bedroom is 23 degrees. (I'm in Italy but it is cold at the moment). My neighbours above and below insulate us very well and we don't have our heating on at all in the bedrooms. I still have to open the window at night though as it is too hot. I would be worried that you can hear the heating though, OP!

Horst · 08/11/2021 10:20

One or two plants it’s a huge difference to heating an entire flat.

One or two plants the op wouldn’t be feeling the heat or any vibrations.

Growing to sell is very different to growing for personal use and that’s before you get into the teenage boy part and fire risks and legality of it all anyway.

Nevermindthesquirrels · 08/11/2021 10:20

@helloise How about we send your kids off to man a weed farm? Get you to live above it?
Would you snitch then or is it only ok to not be a snitch when it's some poor kid that been trafficked.

OP's said in her first post that she's lived there for a while, The building is cold and has rubbish heating, and that this has only been an issue since the new downstairs neighbour moved in...
ChristmasGrogu · 08/11/2021 10:22
@ChristmasGrogu are you a yoga teacher because that is an amazing stretch
A stretch to think someone is possibly being used in modern slavery? That the OP is at risk thri

ChristmasGrogu · 08/11/2021 10:23

Sent before types.
They op is at risk of damage to their electricity supply and gas? They leave the trafficked person there as they know they get reported all the time, so there’s no comeback on the drug king. They’re not going to bother you for reporting they already have their next 3 venues picked out.

Bingbong21 · 08/11/2021 10:23

Well I've just had an education reading this thread.

I would call 101 on account of the teen.

StillWalking · 08/11/2021 10:25

Sounds good to me ... enjoy it while it lasts.

KalvinPhillipsManBun · 08/11/2021 10:26

If you start to get high and hot I think it's a winner!

EmpressFlabulonTheWobbulous · 08/11/2021 10:26

I would also call 101 but mainly because these things are often really dangerous. Dodgy electrical installations plus water! I would be worried about fire to be honest. There is no reason for your name to be linked to it. Or alternatively if you know the landlord then contact them. I would think they might want to pay a visit to make sure their flat hasn’t been trashed to make way for wall to wall cannabis production.

KalvinPhillipsManBun · 08/11/2021 10:28
@Thefuturestory
Oh DOES it? I didn’t know that!!
How do YOU know that? Wink
I was just thinking that! 😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣

1Endeavour2 · 08/11/2021 10:29

Someone I knew used to let out her apartment. When they moved they left behind mega big lights/ heaters on stands. Lots of them. Turned out they had a full scale cannabis enterprise. It funded their education. Also rigged electricity. There is a confidential contact number for human trafficking.

saleorbouy · 08/11/2021 10:29

Makes you realise how much heat is lost through uninsulated floors and ceilings in converted houses of multiple occupancy.
We had a terrace with neighbours both sides who had their heating on a lot more than we would. Even when we came home and had not had the heating on the house always had a nice background heat.

godmum56 · 08/11/2021 10:30

@Trixiefirecracker

I think it’s super unhealthy to have your house at 21 degrees constantly. Would shrivel me up. Especially at night. You need some fresh air and germs love the heat! 😂
I keep mine at 21. Why is it unhealthy? People in other parts of the world live at much warmer temperatures
Summersnake · 08/11/2021 10:31

Cannabis ,you won’t smell it yet

NannyOggsWhiskyStash · 08/11/2021 10:33

If they use charcoal filters, there would be no smell. It does sound like they are growing cannabis tbh. Have you met them yet?
