To think Dumbledore was a massive cheater?

Just finished watching the first Harry Potter film on TV and forgot about the injustice for the Slytherins at the end. I have changed my name in solidarity.

So the Slytherins get the most House Points (presumably fairly as most of the professors at Hogwarts could barely hide their disdain for Slytherin House so wouldn’t have been dishing out points to them for no reason) and are sat there enjoying their win of the House Cup, and celebrating with the room decorated in their House colours, and then former Gryffindor Dumbledore just decides (even though the school year was officially over!!) to throw out an unreasonable amount of points to Harry, Hermione and Ron drawing them level with Slytherin, and then a further 10 points to Neville pushing Gryffindor over the edge and into the win. And then, just to rub salt into the wound, publicly humiliated them by casting a spell to replace all the Slytherin colours with the Gryffindor colours and gives them the award instead and they all celebrate, including him and most of the teachers, and Slytherin has to sit there and just accept it??

AIBU to think WTAF and that was very unfair and he was biased by doing this and it’s no wonder the Slytherins were openly hostile and dismissive of him after that!? I’d be fuming if I were a Slytherin student and if I were a parent of a Slytherin student I’d be marching up to the school myself and having a word with the head.

@ThePunnyMonster

The “you have your mothers eyes” quote used constantly in the film was bloody annoying because they never once cast someone with blue eyes (like Daniel Radcliffe has) to play Lily Potter. All the Lily actresses had brown eyes!
Yes! I wondered why they didn't use coloured contact lenses for Daniel Radcliffe, or make his eyes green in post production. I know it would have been a lot of work, but those films had the budget for massive special effects!

His green eyes are supposed to be one of his defining features.

GrandTheftWalrus · 09/11/2021 14:35

James Potter was an auror. Afaik lily didn't work.

Youdoyoutoday · 09/11/2021 14:47

What annoyed me the most was Harry rushing off to the ministry of magic when he could have used the mirror to see Sirius!! Why was he so stupid to believe that Voldemort could feed him those fake dreams?? So frustrating!!

Also, after Dumbledore died, why did no one go and have a chat with his portrait?

And fancy putting the gryfindor sword in the bottom of a frozen lake?? Was that Snape still being a bit of bully instead of just making it a bit easier to find?

Loving this thread!!

Youdoyoutoday · 09/11/2021 14:48

*voldemort couldn't

GrandTheftWalrus · 09/11/2021 14:53

The mirror annoyed me as well but I think he forgot about it but I'm sure it fell out the trunk in the books while looking for his cloak to go running to London.

I think Snape had to put the sword in the water so Harry could show his worth to get it. I haven't read the last book in a while so details are sketchy.

The Mirror of Erised? The whole problem with that was that it doesn't show the truth. It just shows what you want to see, not what's really happening.

I think Harry did try to talk to Dumbledore's portrait? But it didn't tell him everything.

Tragicroundabout · 09/11/2021 14:55

@Youdoyoutoday I think the mirror thing is pointed out to Harry in the book after the event, but yes very frustrating.
The sword could only be wielded by a true Gryffindor so the user has to go through some kind of adversity in order to get it ( see also Harry in the Chamber of Secrets).

Only just. It takes three years to qualify.

It would have made more sense to have them be 26/27 when they had Harry to be honest.

SickAndTiredAgain · 09/11/2021 14:57

@DrSbaitso no, Sirius gave him a mirror that he had another one of and you could talk to each other through it.
Like FaceTime for wizards.

ChildOfFriday · 09/11/2021 14:59

@DrSbaitso No, I think they mean the mirror that Sirius gave to Harry so he could talk to him- Sirius had the other one so he just had to say Sirius' name into it and he would appear. He gave it to Harry so he could let him know if Snape was bullying him I think (?), but Harry hid it in his trunk (and forgot about it by the look of it) because he didn't want Sirius to risk coming out of the house.

ChildOfFriday · 09/11/2021 14:59

Sorry, cross post Smile

SickAndTiredAgain · 09/11/2021 14:59

The ages also make the Dursleys wrong as well. There wasn’t much of an age gap between Lily and Petunia, just a few years. So at the very start of the first film, when they get Harry, Petunia should have been mid-late twenties.

SickAndTiredAgain · 09/11/2021 15:01

Not even that, 25 max. If Lily was 21 when she died.

Mrsfrumble · 09/11/2021 15:05

This thread should be in classics!

Funnily enough I was just musing on how small the wizarding community in the UK must be if there were only 40 kids in Harry’s year at Hogwarts. Makes sense that they’d hook up early and marry young I suppose.

DrSbaitso · 09/11/2021 15:07

I forgot about that mirror! A thorough reread is in order...

I didn't, it's always annoyed me!

And you're right, I fancy a read through again now! Grin

"The sword could only be wielded by a true Gryffindor so the user has to go through some kind of adversity in order to get it ( see also Harry in the Chamber of Secrets)."

To be fair, Harry had already showed his worth in Chamber of Secrets, seems a tad overkill to prove his worth yet again.

DrSbaitso · 09/11/2021 15:48

I never liked Ginny. I know she was supposed to be feisty but I thought she was just nasty a lot of the time. At least she had a personality in the books, though. In the films it was as if they almost forgot to write her at all.

IndominusRex · 09/11/2021 16:13

I can’t believe we were robbed of Hugh Grant’s lockheart! 😭

Yup.. and the fact that Robin Williams asked for a part several times but wasn’t allowed because he’s not British is also a bit upsetting to be honest Sad
IndominusRex · 09/11/2021 16:27

Robin Williams should have been Peeves!

DrSbaitso · 09/11/2021 16:28

With the right ageing makeup etc, Robin Williams could have been a wonderfully dotty, eccentric, but very wise and clever Dumbledore.

I didn't like either Dumbledore. Why didn't they get Ian McKellen?

Apparently:

“Before his passing, Richard Harris called McKellen a dreadful actor. Warner Bros. decided to go with Michael Gambon as the new Dumbledore out of respect for Harris.”

Itsnotallaboutyoubaby · 09/11/2021 16:32

Yep. Robin Williams would’ve nailed any part he was given I’m sure. He was wonderful

SickAndTiredAgain · 09/11/2021 16:32

Rik Mayall filmed scenes as Peeves but they cut them.
