AIBU to find it utterly astounding that it's socially acceptable in England for pet cats to poop in other people's gardens??!

I honestly cannot get my head round this. We've moved into a new house and the garden is full of cat shit. Not a single cat owner I know has a little tray for their cat to use. Where do cat owners think their cats poop? Do you honestly not care that it's in other peoples gardens?
My dh is from in a country where this is not socially acceptable and cat owners have litter trays and the cats bloody use them.

@twelly

Cats are free to roam and therefore they will - when they poo they do try and cover it. All the other animals which enter garden such squirrels and birds also poo - this is what animals do.
Got it, thanks for the biology lesson. When's the exam?

@JaniieJones

'it's not ok. But it is accepted'

Yes tolerated and accepted because we have no choice in the matter but it is not ok. Lets hope the law changes to put an end to it and pet owners have to look after their own pets on their own property.

And still you've not said whether you'd be happy to keep your dog detained in your house and garden never allowed to take them off your property. That is what you're wishing on cats.

(It will literally never ever happen though)

Eh? People pick up after their dogs.. or, they’re supposed to. If you want to walk your cat and pick up after it alkthingsservetgebeam, then have at it. People don’t contain their dogs in order to stop them shitting in other peoples gardens because they don’t need to.

DrawsSword · 09/11/2021 11:58

Perhaps what you're leaning towards is that cats aren't suitable pets ^if the right to roam was changed?
But on a more positive note, I've seen cats on leads, in baskets on the front of bikes, in trolleys.

And we circle back to cats are not dogs and are treated differently under the law. You are required to do things relating to dogs (under the law) that you are not required to do with cats.

Bit like bikes are not cars, that sort of thing.

Yes, we're debating the law, people's moral compass, likes and dislikes. That sort of thing

People can't because the vast majority of cats won't do well being walked on a lead. Plus they don't need to be as they are... I'm not sure if you're aware... Allowed to roam. What I have repeatedly asked the poster is if she'd be happy never to let her dog leave her house or garden again.

But they are allowed to roam so it's a moot point. And not all cats will tolerate that and a dog off lead and a cat on a lead? Reckon that will end well if the dogs doesn't like cats? No me neither. At least free roaming cats have a chance to escape

You're fighting an uphill battle to get one of mine to keep a collar on 🤣 that is on tolerant cat!
DrawsSword · 09/11/2021 12:13

Yes, we're raising whether they should have a right to roam if the consequence is crapping in other peoples gardens!!!!! That's the point.
I think what is clear is that there a lot of people who really like cats as pets but wouldn't be able to have them if the cats couldn't roam because their properties aren't big enough.

What would be decent is if cat owners did say, I know my cat shits in your garden and I am sorry. I do love my cat, it brings me much joy. Sorry for the inconvenience. Noy one person has said that in nearly 1000 messages. Just the verbatim right to roam, deal with it, my cat is in charge lols. I want people to be happy and appreciate that people love their cats. Some gratitude from the cat owners wouldn't go amiss, using little trays, keeping them in at night.

On a serious note, there is cat diarrhea and puke on my lawn (it's NOT a fox, I can see the cat food chunks). Is this a poorly cat? Should I tell my neighbour?

I've literally said my cats have litter trays and if someone knocked on and knew it was my cats shit in their garden could we pick it up I'd do it. I am not keeping my cats in and I cannot do anything else!

I didn't ask for my cats I rescue them from shit situations that they didn't ask for. I would never support breeding them. If people stopped (again, never going to happen) then we wouldn't have this problem would we.

Runny poo and sick can mean a poorly cat. Do you knows whose cat it is? I would. My neighbour lets me know when he's seen mine get bullied by the neighborhood tough cat and checks him for any war wounds

Someone needed to tell my scummy former neighbours that! They used to let their disgusting snappy mutt wander into peoples' gardens and crap everywhere. I have a front gate so the little bastard never came into my garden thankfully. Eventually they were reported to the council when someone managed to video it.

“But on a more positive note, I've seen cats on leads, in baskets on the front of bikes, in trolleys.”

No OP. That is not a “positive note.” That is ANIMAL CRUELTY.

How many times does it need to be said?

CATS ARE NOT DOGS. THEY ARE TERRITORIAL ANIMALS. THEY MARK THEIR TERRITORY BY SPRAYING A SCENT (NOT POO, THEY COVER THIS UP UNLESS ILL).

IF YOU TAKE A CAT OUT OF ITS FAMILIAR TERRITORY (ON A BIKE, IN SHOPPING TROLLEY OR ON A LEAD DOWN THE STREET, THIS IS VERY TRAUMATIC FOR THEM BECAUSE OF THE UNFAMILIAR SCENTS OF OTHER CATS / ANIMALS. CATS ARE CREATURES IF HABIT, NOT ‘ACCESSORIES’ TO TAKE TO THE SUPERMARKET FFS!

Seriously, if you’re going to post about cats, at least have a basic grasp of what a cat actually is.

DrawsSword · 09/11/2021 12:29

No I don't but my neighbour has two cats so I'll let her know just in case it's one of hers

Lol. So they are wild animals and unsuitable as pets?
