I honestly cannot get my head round this. We've moved into a new house and the garden is full of cat shit. Not a single cat owner I know has a little tray for their cat to use. Where do cat owners think their cats poop? Do you honestly not care that it's in other peoples gardens?
My dh is from in a country where this is not socially acceptable and cat owners have litter trays and the cats bloody use them.

Do you have a lot of small stones in your garden op? I lived somewhere that did once and the neighbours cats treated it like a giant litter tray.

Our last house was in a cat-dominated area but it doesn't bother me.

We had rats once because our next door but one buried a load of rubbish under a thin layer of topsoil in his garden. Didn't find out the cause till new owners moved in.

Rats do bother me. I was all for settling light to the place and emigrating. Cat poo I can cope with.

Dreamstate · 08/11/2021 21:27
@Dreamstate you literally sit in your house and watch a car shit on your patio instead of shooing them off? Why would you do that?

And other cats do poo in my garden I've seen them scraping in the leaves and slate we have.
I'm chilling on my sofa watching TV which so happens to be that my sofa faces the patio doors so I see the garden and yeah I see the cat. No im not gonna get up and shoo if it off cos ofs already done its poo by the time I realised.

Don't be so obtuse. And BTW why should I have to get up and disturb what I'm doing.

Wouldn't have this problem is cat owners cat proofed their gardens

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 08/11/2021 21:34

@Dreamstate you don't have to. But if it bothers you so much, like it seems to, surely scaring it off would help your situation. You're cutting your nose off to spite your face sitting watching it while you're watching telly aren't you. Because there is sod all chance the cat owner is going to cat proof their garden.

Lady08 · 08/11/2021 21:39

I’ve just had a little chuckle to myself, I can’t believe we’ve reached 36 pages about cat shit 😂
I really need to get out more!

Brilliant isn't it what people can argue about cat shit is like the major argument starter
EdenFlower · 08/11/2021 21:43

Still pondering how to 'cat proof' the garden... Funny how nobody has come up with a way yet!

Lady08 · 08/11/2021 22:03

@AllThingsServeTheBeam

Isn’t it just, I’m just watching my cat snooze away, whilst she’s blissfully unaware her species causes a mountain of mayhem on Mumsnet.
To be fair, I’ve probably contributed to one of those pages.

The question is, will there be a thread number two? 😂

I hope not. One cat shit thread a week is more than enough. I'm just about to go and get 2 of my 3 in. I very much doubt my litter tray will be used tonight

Naw I just along it back over the fence into there garden. Quite amusing when I hear the wife shouting at her husband about how gross it is to pick up...shouldn't of got a cat then!

I don't have a pet cos I don't want to have to deal with their poo. I dont get foxes or any other wild animal in my garden crapping.

Unfortunate for them I know its their cat but ah well sont frt a pet if you don't want to be responsible for it and all that comes with looking after one.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 08/11/2021 22:21

@Dreamstate so you see their cat shit every single time do you? Why don't you just ask them to come and pick it up? If my neighbours asked me and proved it was my cat which you obviously are able to I'd pick it up

Lifewith · 08/11/2021 22:22

@PanicStationsAhh

YANBU OP I never understand why it's socially acceptable for people to (quite rightly) complain about dog mess on pavements etc but letting your cats shit wherever they want is fine. I know cat owners say well them roam, but maybe don't get one then.
Oh ffs this is getting ridiculous. 'Letting' a cat , seriously

Oooh let's see GrinGrin
I think the cat haters are just getting going....
Sorry, the poo haters.

maddening · 08/11/2021 22:36

Like fuck is it any different anywhere else in the World where cats are allowed outside.

Elsewhere cats and dogs are feral and dumped on the streets, even in parts of Europe such as Greece.

My parents (UK) Do have a kitty litter, the cats are in at night and do use the litter, but there is no guarantee they don't go outside. They do back on to fields so there is more outdoor space which is not a garden so hopefully they are not going in the neighbours gardens, but who can tell.

Sunshinegirl82 · 08/11/2021 22:39

I'm just setting up my cat's special night time blanket (one side fleece, one side fur) on the sofa whilst DH sorts her food and water, unloved semi-feral creature that she is!

StoneofDestiny · 08/11/2021 22:40

Stine ofDestiny
So you also have no sympathy for humans hit by cars? You think they shouldn’t stop to help because they’ve got too many things to be doing? Blimey, I’ve heard it now!
Plenty of teenagers have walked in front of my car and I’ve seen cross dangerously, maybe their parents don’t care about them too?

Em - get real. A human I'd risk my life for, but not a cat. Id not risk the lives of other drivers either for a cat. Ambulances are for people not cats, so I'd call an ambulance for a human. I'd stop to help a human and lose sleep over a human injury or death. But a roaming cat I'd not risk my life for, or that of others.
The cat owner needs to shoulder the guilt, not the poor driver.

StoneofDestiny · 08/11/2021 22:47

Who has even said they pick up their cats shit with their hands, or have you just made that up

I imagine nobody picks up shit with their bare hands, but gardeners often garden with their bare hands, pick their flowers, strawberries, lettuces etc - utterly foul if you find you've got cat shit there (and no, they don't always bury their waste). Getting it on your gardening gloves isn't much better. Not to mention children unwittingly putting their hands in it.

HannibalHayeski · 08/11/2021 22:49

And you're worried about this when the government has just been whipped to allow megatons of "poop" to be pumped into our rivers and onto our coasts?

Priorities...

Really? I'm not waiting for them to come home to pick it up, meaning if I want to be in my garden when I want to I can't because of how bad it stinks.

But of course mt life can inconvenienced because how very dare I want to use my garden, grow plants and veg without them being destroyed.

Your right next time their cat destroys my plants I just bought ill send a bill to my neighbour. Yeah right

smellooo · 08/11/2021 23:04

Sorry if it's been mentioned but you can get cat litter trays that are make the poo go down the actual toilet.

I want to know what country the polite home-popping cats live in?

mathanxiety · 09/11/2021 05:14

In USA, i believe it is also frowned upon to let your cat wander outside, it is regarded as an indoor pet.

Here's why:
Weather (extreme cold and heat)
Predators (hawks, owls, snakes, coyotes, foxes, etc)
High rise living

Some people let their cats wander in mild weather. They run a risk though.

It's interesting to note that many places in the US have very strict leash laws, and some cities/towns provide dog parks to keep dogs from bothering people/pooping in public places mostly used by people. There are by-laws regarding picking up of dog poo in a lot of places.

malificent7 · 09/11/2021 05:41

Noone can tell a cat what to do...that's why they are superior beings! We have a litter tray but i bet my right arm she still takes a dump elsewhere. Short of locking her in, there's nowt i can do.

malificent7 · 09/11/2021 05:42

Btw...buy some cat repellant granules...they work!

It’s not uncommon in Australia for cats to have be confined to your property, see this council’s rules for cat ownership. Other councils may not have blanket rules but in new subdivisions you won’t be allowed to keep them free roaming. But other than the benefit not having someone else’s cat’s shit in your garden, the cat is kept safe from dogs and snakes, and native animals are kept safe from it.

This particular council area would have a lot of native wildlife as it’s not inner city, most people would have decent size backyards or border onto parks/farmland etc.

They’re polite home pooping cats unless the owner doesn’t give a shit 😁 and has deep pockets for paying fines.

headintheproverbial · 09/11/2021 06:47

If there is noticeable poo it's more likely to belong to a fox. They shit everyone. Cat poo is tiny and is usually completely buried.

Anyway - the vast majority of cat owners I know (including us) have a litter tray so I just think you are completely wrong on that part.
