AIBU to find it utterly astounding that it's socially acceptable in England for pet cats to poop in other people's gardens??!

I honestly cannot get my head round this. We've moved into a new house and the garden is full of cat shit. Not a single cat owner I know has a little tray for their cat to use. Where do cat owners think their cats poop? Do you honestly not care that it's in other peoples gardens?
My dh is from in a country where this is not socially acceptable and cat owners have litter trays and the cats bloody use them.

'So what will happen if we let them all run wild and feral and don’t keep them as pets.'

Well who is suggesting that? What I've said throughout is train your cat to use a litter tray and let it roam in your garden, not other people's. It's has been established that this isn't going to change, cat owners couldn't give a toss about the damage and nuisance their pet is doing to other people's property, the question that remains unanswered is why don't they care?? are they just generally selfish in most other aspects of neighbourly life too perhaps.

treguffin · 08/11/2021 14:39

I don't think you can train a cat not to shit outside can you? I mean we always had litter trays which the cats used when they were inside, but they shat outside as well.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 08/11/2021 14:39

@Dreamstate

I know for fact my neighbours cat crops in mine I just sling it over the fence back into their garden. I've seen it come over and do it whilst I'm in my lounge watching TV so there is no mistake whose cat it was.

They wanted a cat they can deal with it

Any shit you find? Or only the shit you actually see their cat doing?
AllThingsServeTheBeam · 08/11/2021 14:41

@AngeloMysterioso

Do you need me to say it slowly..... Dogs and cats are different...

How though? Legalities aside, what is it about your cat’s shit that makes it more acceptable than your neighbours dog shit? Why is it ok for your cat to shit in your neighbours garden but not ok for their dog to shit in your garden?

Read the thread. Not bothering to repeat myself anymore

I'm laughing at these comments! "Tell the wild fox/hedgehog/bird/giraffe/lion...."

This is NOT what this is about! It's about 'some' inconsiderate humans who buy a pet and do not care and look after it correctly!

Why should the OP have to check her garden and clean up someone else's cat poo? I have to check before our kids play out! How can you cat proof a garden?

I have a dog. Part of being a responsible pet owner is to clean up after YOUR pet. I do it, do I enjoy it - no but I still do it and I do not allow my dog to poop on other people's properties!!
OP - it is NOT socially acceptable and those who say otherwise are just lazy, irresponsible owners!

Maybe cat owners should cat proof their gardens instead or expecting other non cat owners to do it. Oh yeah right you don't want to spend money doing it right but happy to expect other ppl to have to.

Cats have not evolved to live indoors, many can’t adapt to this either.

Again, many owners do have a litter tray but can’t guarantee their cat will think ‘Oh I need a shit, must travel back the mile home to take one!’
Do you go home every time you need a shit?

Anyway I’m ignoring your continuous crazy, dictating comments.

I suppose you don’t think about the impact you have on many species in this world? Maybe you’re selfish in many parts of your life too and you like pretending your lifestyle affects no one, it’s great to live a blissful life where your perfect and no one else is Hmm

They can't cat proof their gardens they don't want to inhibit their cats essential roaming you see.

'A decent cat owner might suggest letting them know and they'll pick it up - and I had one neighbour who was lovely like they'

Ah now wouldn't that have been nice and helpful if others had said similar on here. Nope, just lots of couldn’t give a fuck, excuses and 'it's not illegal' bollocks.

If you could guarantee that it was my cats shit I wouldn't hesitate to pick it up. But unless you have CCTV in your garden it could be one of over 20 cats around here and as I have said I have litter trays that they occasionally use and they shit in my own garden

I have never purchased a pet. And I look after them correctly. It is socially acceptable.. it's the law. Take it up with your local MP and let me know how you go on

So we have our own garden and litter trays etc. But how would I know if my cat poos in other gardens, if people don’t tell me? Are we supposed to stalk them by stealth? Leave hidden cameras in key positions? Peer over fences 24/7? Hire a cat detective?

Nextdoor’s cats come into our garden. I couldn’t give a hoot. Cats wander across from god knows where. I don’t sit there curtain-twitching and then scouring the borders for cat poo. We have loads of foxes too. They blatantly look at me and poo on the middle of the lawn in broad daylight. So what?

antsinyourpanta · 08/11/2021 15:20

One of our cats must have given in and done a wee in the litter tray last night. (They were shut in due to fireworks)
...but I think they must have held in a poo to do in somebody elses the garden Blush

I

hangrylady · 08/11/2021 15:22

Ah yes, the reality of co-existence!

2I have a cat and she is legally entitled to wander all over my neighbours' gardens and shit where she damn well pleases. This may annoy some of them but hey ho, them's the breaks!

People are also entitled to ride bikes whilst dressed in hideous Lycra in annoying ways all over the lanes nearby my house which I find very annoying. Such is life!"

Yep. I had to scrub dog shit off my kids shoes after school the other day which I found annoying too. There is also a noisy cockerel around here. Some people need to get a grip. I have also never in my 42 years of being around cats, known one that doesn't bury their poo, but according to the anti-cat MN experts it is most definitely cat shit on their patio.

Dreamstate · 08/11/2021 15:22

Well my living room has large patio doors to the garden, watching TV i can see cats wandering in and poo on the patio. So im not curtain twitching or stalking people its literally not something I'll miss seeing.

Other cats won't poo in your garden if u already have your own cats since they are territorial and just wandering through

There are 2 other cats that just pass through my garden and dont destroy my plants and veg nor crap in it. But my neighbours cat does and it pisses me off how much money and time I waste planting nice flowers, growing my own salad and its destroyed. I've tried the plastic spikes, the sound, lion poo etc none of it stops it.

That's okay you don't care your neighbours are spending money they shouldn't have to just enjoy their garden.

Fuk cat owners quite frankly

@Dreamstate you literally sit in your house and watch a car shit on your patio instead of shooing them off? Why would you do that?

And other cats do poo in my garden I've seen them scraping in the leaves and slate we have.
