Greggs as good as / better than Krispy Kreme

Krispy Kreme are held up as the gold standard of doughnuts and don’t get me wrong, they’re nice. But they’re deeply overrated and overpriced and Greggs filled doughnuts are just as nice. AIBU?

Tim Hortons are the best donuts ever.

jetadore · 07/11/2021 07:29

Krispy Kreme are a pet peeve of mine, the most overrated, overpriced excuses for donuts. They’re not even ‘Krispy’! The bread texture is insubstantial, so light/soft, they’re all about the icing/decoration/filling and hence too sweet. Totally infantile! Give me a good jam donut any day of the week and twice on sundays please!

Kanaloa · 07/11/2021 07:32

I actually find krispy kreme really sickly. DH brought one in for me a couple of months ago, chocolate with some sort of vanilla filling, and I couldn’t even finish it. And I’m not one of these people who only needs to nibble the side of a digestive - it was just so sickly that it didn’t taste good.

Justme10 · 07/11/2021 07:42

I don't Krispy Kreme at all, never had a nice one!
Coop sugar ring donuts are my favourite but they always sell so quickly at my local one you have to be there early!
Nothing is better than a fresh hot sugar donut though Grin

TravellingJack · 07/11/2021 08:13

Don't know if there is such a thing as a bad doughnut (I do like a Krispy Kreme on occasion) but the BEST doughnut in existence is the Fisher & Donaldson fudge doughnut. It's equivalent to several meals in one hefty lump, filled edge to edge with creamy custard goodness... the bakery is in Fife but it's worth the trip wherever you are.

dorothygaleandtoto · 07/11/2021 08:20

A lot of the supermarket jam donuts are now dusted in a sort of cornflour/icing sugar mix, rather than rolled in crunchy sugar. I prefer the crunchy sugar but they seem hard to find now.

Alpacahunter · 07/11/2021 08:26

Lidl lemon doughnuts! I don't even like sweets or any doughnuts but I can devour a bag of those in one sitting Grin

Sparkai · 07/11/2021 08:26

KK taste very artificial to me.

I don't like the jam in morrisons donuts. Sainsburys are my go to. I like Greggs (and they are a million times better than kk), but my local Greggs only seems to stock chocolate or caramel custard and I'd much rather have jam

lap90 · 07/11/2021 08:29

Erm, disagree tbh.

Krispy Kremes have more competition these days - Crosstown and Doughnut Time.

furbabymama87 · 07/11/2021 08:31

I like both, they're both different to each other so can't really compare. Krispy Kreme are overpriced though and I buy Greggs more so will go with Greggs.

FreedomFaith · 07/11/2021 08:31

Everyone told me how great Krispy Kreme was. I was very disappointed. I've had better doughnuts from tesco. For the price, they are crap. Totally not worth it.

PlausibleSuit · 07/11/2021 08:34

So many people sneer at Greggs but the food is pretty decent as a rule.

Greggs’ mince pies are second only to Fortnum & Mason’s in my view and that’s high praise indeed for I am very fussy.

knittingaddict · 07/11/2021 08:38

Krispy kreme are horrible. They don't seem like real food to me - greasy, too sweet and somehow chemically. Can't really describe how much of a let down they are.

Never had a Gregg's doughnut, but almost anything is better than an overpriced KK.

I recently had a custard doughnut from Gloucester services farm shop and it was divine. Thats probably my gold standard now, although it was far too rich to eat on a regular basis.

Totally agreed. I think Sainburys still do sugar and they are a very nice doughnut as well. Probably my favourite supermarket one.

This is a very bad thread. I'm now feeling the need to try a Gregg's dn. Just to test, you understand

pastapestoparmesan · 07/11/2021 08:42

The only Krispy Kreme I ever tried (didn’t even finish it) was one of the biggest food disappointments of my life. I thought it was going to be the ultimate doughnut eating experience but it was vile - greasy and far too sweet, and so expensive too. My doughnut preference is a jam one from a proper bakery.

Jmaho · 07/11/2021 09:00

My eldest son nags me for Krispy Kreme every time we go to Tesco. I never give in because I'm not paying nearly 3 quid for a doughnut! But for his 12th Birthday recently I came up with the great idea of getting him a dozen mixed instead of a normal birthday cake. He was thrilled! Until we started eating them. Gross, greasy, sickly things. Totally over rated. No one even finished one and we ended up chucking the last 3 or 4. He has asked for Greggs next year!

Gingersay · 07/11/2021 09:01

Greggs by far their fudge donuts are the best. I hate Tim Hortons donuts are awful everyone tastes like maple syrup doesn't matter what one you order, my dh and kids love them but I hate maple syrup.

Eliphanbee · 07/11/2021 09:02

Morrisons doughnuts are amazing! I think 55p for 5 too!

Glad someone else appreciates Doughnut Time! Though Crosstown are the best - love the seasonal flavours.
gogohm · 07/11/2021 09:27

Morrison's raspberry jam donuts have a different texture but I really like them. But best donuts are from the lady on Weston-Super-Mayer beach, I haven't driven 25 minutes to buy some ever have i?Blush

Biker47 · 07/11/2021 09:47

Tim Hortons is better than both Greggs and Krispy Kreme.

MrsClatterbuck · 07/11/2021 10:16

Some of the best doughnuts I have had where at a farmer's market across the pond. They were mini donuts which were freshly made and just rolling out of the machine. Still warm and absolutely delicious. I remember when they were called gravy rings.

MintyGreenDream · 07/11/2021 10:24

Dunkin donuts are the best

ImStayingInside · 07/11/2021 10:38

Am I the only one who can’t cope with how KK donuts are stored in Tesco? I hate the self service element and did even before Covid.
I’ve had KK from an actual KK shop in town and they were ok, but I’ve never had one where you can pick your own from the cabinet.

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 07/11/2021 11:19

Tim Hortons timbits are my absolute favourite although not technically a doughnut. One of their French vanilla coffees and a box of timbits is my idea of heaven.

I was elated when they opened in Brum!
