... to wonder how prevalent "spiking" really is?

There's been a few reported incidents this term already at the Uni where my DD2 is studying. She is in her final year, and over the past years she's told me about two suspected incidences with her close friendship group.

I wish there were some better data on this. Is it really that common?

10 or so years ago, when I was working in night clubs, I was spiked. I didn't drink at work (it was allowed)
, but pretended I did so that when customers would "buy me a drink" i would say that I would have one later and have the money as tips etc. I had a drink bought for me, and between it leaving the bar, and getting to my hostess stand, it was spiked. I went from being completely sober to being virtually unable to stand.

It was also incredibly easy and cheap to get hold of GHB off dealers. My ex used to buy it "as a sleep aid". He drugged me more than once for fun. Valium is (or was) also common. I wouldn't be surprised if it is still as available and cheap.

My little sister was presumably spiked about 15 years ago.
She was on a work do in a bar, her colleagues said she went to toilet and never came back. They assumed she had decided to get the last train.
She had had 2 drinks but remembers very little and her next memory after having a drink with colleagues is at 5 am when she found herself sitting at a bus stop. A commuter asked her if she was OK, she had a cut to her head. She knows nothing of that 6 hours and never will.
I find it terrifying.

Onthegrid · 07/11/2021 08:17

In my sample of 2 DC who are mid 20s and live in different UK cities so far this autumn one has been spiked in a club, that was her and her group of friends. The other has not been spiked but at least 2 of her friends have.
Both of them are avoiding clubs now or having 1 sober person.

daretodenim · 07/11/2021 08:38

I was spiked.
It was (I think) with some very strong alcohol, but I don't know. I was lucky with the consequences in comparison to what could have happened given my state and the situation.
I was very afraid for a long time after.

Countrydiary · 07/11/2021 08:46

Knew several people who were spiked mid-00s at university.

FlyingWhistle · 07/11/2021 08:47

Someone I went to 6th form with in the late 90's was spiked.

I'm sure it's happening but I question it happening via injection as many have claimed.

I think spiking slowed when women started drinking bottled drinks as they were easy to dance with and you could buy stoppers too, now people are into cocktails in glasses it would be easier to spike people.

We need to introduce the kids to Bacardi Breezers!

This thread is so gross.

Of course it couldn't me that men are drugging us. Oh no, those stupid little girls definitely just drank too much.

The victim blaming is strong on MN. As always.

SilverGlitterBaubles · 07/11/2021 08:49

What I just don't understand is the purpose or mindset of anyone that would plan and take drugs, needles etc on a night out to spike people. Is it to take advantage of a person? Many incidents of spiking do not go on to result in anything sinister other than the awful effects of the drugs, so why? Does someone just get their kicks from watching a few people completely out of it?

I imagine they feel quite powerful knowing they've done something to someone against their will.

I agree with a PP, bottle drinks always seemed safer. Had many a night out on blue WKD.

Flowersintheattic2021 · 07/11/2021 09:00

Is your dd in Sheffield. The needle spiking recently is awful.

Agreed, it’s completely shocking. I’m 24 and know three people who have been spiked in the last two years. One of them a man, so it was probably done because they thought it was funny. Every story is the same, one or two drinks and they remember nothing until about 5am.

I’m just past the age where anyone is going clubbing regularly so I don’t know of anyone who has been injected, but I fully believe it.

Hubs456 · 07/11/2021 09:04

It certainly does happen, and I’d tell your dd2 to be wary of leaving her drink alone and /or receiving drinks from strangers.
I don’t think it’s that common though. I work in a hospital and see many people who think they have been spiked. Some of them are likely to have been for certain (although this isn’t tested for in the hospital) but most of them turn out to be just very drunk. I would encourage anyone who believes they have been spiked to get in contact with the police.

Flowersintheattic2021 · 07/11/2021 09:06

It's not in drinks though google sheffield spiking they are injecting teens

Ponoka7 · 07/11/2021 09:09

It seems to be a new trend, horrifically people have died because of panic etc and been crushed at Astro world. It's been confirmed that people have been injected.

milkyaqua · 07/11/2021 09:10

@Hilarias

At that horrendous crush in Houston last night they’ve reported one of the bouncers collapsed unconscious after feeling a pinprick in his neck.
Yes, and that he was revived with Narcan - which is used to reverse opioid overdose.
StylishMummy · 07/11/2021 09:11

I've been spiked twice. The first time I was considered to be a pissed teenager until my friend called my dad, who took me to hospital. My eyes were rolling back in my head and I have a 12-14 hour memory gap.

The second time I was raped inside a nightclub. It's fucking terrifying knowing you can't control your own body, and I never ever drink to that point. Women and girls should be safe to drink as much as they want without fear or rape or harm

ellie21 · 07/11/2021 09:13

@Suspiciousmind20n

ellie21 · 07/11/2021 09:17

Thank you @Suspiciousmind20.
I'm really surprised at the number of people on here who are saying they have been spiked, only for others to counter that they are totally wrong.
It just isn't helpful or supportive.

WhatsWrongWithMyUsername · 07/11/2021 09:20

I’m sure I was, mid-00s, I was a very seasoned clobber/ pubber/ drinker. I knew exactly how much I’d had to drink, it was a normal amount for me, and suddenly I’m back and forth to the toilets throwing up.

The pub bouncer escorted me from the toilets off the premises (only time that ever happened to me). Would not let me grab my friends on the way out, which I think is horrific and wish I’d complained at the time. Luckily my friends saw. The guys we’d been talking to at the bar were waiting outside (why? It was still early).

I had the second worst hangover of my life the next day (the worst one was definitely too much alcohol, although that one was also the boys making my drinks doubles not singles though i guessed that at the time).

The reports of needle spiking are very scary.

Inthe60s · 07/11/2021 09:22

Before reading this thread, I would have assumed it was very rare, and maybe something that happens more abroad, often confused with too much drink, etc.

I'm older than most of the people here. Over many years I've known many friends that have been sexually assaulted/raped. It's something that has come up from time to time in discussions. None has ever mentioned being spiked (assaulted when drunk, yes!)

The posts make me reconsider. It's certainly getting more attention, and raises awareness, which is a good thing.

FrippEnos · 07/11/2021 09:30

The issue with the data have already been posted but are worth repeating.

The main way of spiking drinks is with more alcohol and A&E seem to automatically assume any people that have come through their doors have had to much to drink and don't test them.

and yes there is also an element of those drinking too much claiming that they have been spiked.

And before anyone accuses me of victim blaming I have been spiked as have several of my friends.

MumofSpud · 07/11/2021 09:44

But if all these people are being spiked - why?
I would (sadly) imagine it is to be taken advantage of somehow- financially / sexually but a lot of Ops are saying that they got spiked and (luckily?) this didn't happen.
So do people spike drinks to see someone in this state - for a power trip?

Comedycook · 07/11/2021 09:47

Look it definitely goes on of course.

However I have never heard of someone who is totally teetotal and hasn't drunk at all, finding themselves in this situation. I don't drink alcohol anymore...I drink orange juice on a night out. If I passed out or was incoherent, it would be a pretty open and shut case. When I did drink however, I often had nights where I thought to myself, oh I didn't drink that much yet I was so drunk. Then I'd remember oh actually I did a shot in that bar, oh actually that vodka I had was a double and I did have a quick glass of wine before we left. Kind of like how we often underestimate how much we eat.

crikeycrumbsblimey · 07/11/2021 09:51

@Ponoka7 glad it isn’t just me

The victim blaming on this thread is completely disgusting.

Krisjongun1 · 07/11/2021 09:54

It’s not quite the same but when we were 17, my friend and I had our soft drinks spiked with laxatives by a male friend as some sort of ‘revenge’ plot
