... to wonder how prevalent "spiking" really is?

There's been a few reported incidents this term already at the Uni where my DD2 is studying. She is in her final year, and over the past years she's told me about two suspected incidences with her close friendship group.

I wish there were some better data on this. Is it really that common?

I work in a university and it's happening all the time.

The barman at a trendy venue has been done for it, but how prevalent it is, he's clearly not the only one.

The girls are terrified of going out, it's having a massive impact on them in terms of fear and trust issues.

MedusasBadHairDay · 06/11/2021 20:30

A relative was spiked 15 or so years ago. She was raped and woke up in a strange hotel room with no bag, purse or phone. Fucking terrifying for her.

There's a reason we took our drinks to the toilet with us, and made sure we could see our drinks being prepared. This isn't new, these young women now aren't part of a new hysteria, and we need to protect them from predatory men.

BettyOBarley · 06/11/2021 20:34

It's been happening for a long time but this stuff about being injected is another level.
My friend once got spiked in our local nightclub. There was no one hanging around us or chatting to us. She had one sip of her drink, put it down and a few minutes later as we were walking to the loo she just fell flat on her face, out cold. Really dread to think what would have happened if she'd drunk more. The bouncers just thought she'd drunk too much but at the hospital they said they'd had a few in that weekend from the same area. This must have been around 2002.

BettyOBarley · 06/11/2021 20:36

Also of I remember rightly she said the hospital said they could do blood tests but there wasn't much point as whatever it was would have been put of her system fairly quickly, so I guess a lot of these cases are never proven as spiking.

Also, I’ve never ever come across a dealer who sells any sort of date rape drugs, so where are these spikers supposed to be buying them? You can’t exactly Google rohypnol and get it delivered

I would imagine you could find things like that on the dark web and get it delivered.

Sparechange · 06/11/2021 21:15

You could, but buying in the dark web is in itself a complicated process

If it was simple and risk free, everyone would be doing it and you wouldn’t be seeing thousands of people arrested for street dealing

And when there are dark web busts, like Silk Road, there would be records of date rape drug sales. Which there aren’t.

But that still doesn’t explain why all these spikers manage to get the dosage exactly right

If they were slugging a bit of date rape drug into a drink, they would be more than occasionally getting it wrong
Which would result in lots of women rendered unconscious for 24+ hours and in a very bad way

Yet I don’t think I’ve ever seen a single report of this happening
So how come these street spikers are able to magically get doses just right, in a way that people using GHB and other street drugs in a deliberate way, can’t do

If even 1% of spiked drinks had the wrong dose, there would be scores of women being found unconscious
Yet they are always ‘staggering’ or having ‘blurry vision’

It just doesn’t make any sense or add up

SockQueen · 06/11/2021 21:27

I had my Bacardi Breezer spiked with vodka at a house party when I was 17. Some of the boys at school thought it would be funny to get me drunk as I was usually very straight-laced. I only found out months later - at the time I just thought I was a complete lightweight. Fortunately nothing serious happened.

Regarding the latest stories about spiking with needles, it's worth knowing that most hospital A&Es can't/won't do extensive drug tests. It's not necessary for immediate management of intoxication, and they don't have the right facilities/training for it to be an admissible chain of evidence for a criminal investigation. This kind of testing needs to be done by the police.

When I was in my 20's I'm sure I was spiked when travelling. Went out and had a few beers with girls I met in a hostel. It was suggested that we all go somewhere else and I somehow got seperated with one bloke. We went in a different bar and I suddenly felt awful. Told him I was going to the toilet and went straight back to the hostel came to in the toilet floor at about 6am. I'd had less than a pint of beer.

I don't think it's that uncommon.

MacNTosh · 06/11/2021 21:34

I have two dds at Uni, they’ve been spiked, all their female friends have been spiked. Three friends daughters have been spiked. It’s very common.

AccidentallyOnPurpose · 06/11/2021 21:34

Different types of spiking can include the following substances being added to drinks:
Alcohol
‘Date rape’ drugs
Illegal drugs
Prescription drugs (e.g. stimulants, tranquilisers, sedatives, opiates)

Recreational drugs like Ecstasy, Lysergic Acid Diethylamide (LSD), Ketamine and other ‘party-drugs’ are sometimes used to spike alcoholic drinks

It's not exactly rocket science or GHB and rohypnol only. Even if it was, where there's a will there's a way.

MacNTosh · 06/11/2021 21:38

By which I mean gone to hospital, not just felt a bit woozy

spotcheck · 06/11/2021 21:40

@Ponoka7

It looks like this is another male on female crime that's going to get denied/minimised and those silly girls have just had too much to drink.
Yep

Do you hang out with a lot of dealers ,druggies or "party" people?
ellie21 · 06/11/2021 22:32

Yes it does happen.
For me, I was 17, a virgin and it was in the 90s. I remember being bought a drink, then collapsing on a nightclub floor. Apparently I was carried out unconscious and taken to a friends but woke a few hours later to find I was being orally raped by the friend’s brother’s friend.
I never reported it because ridiculously I was ashamed and didn’t want to cause any trouble.

Atmywitsend29 · 06/11/2021 22:36

I've been spiked. And I know a few other young women who have been spiked. And a couple of guys.

Spiking isn't just drugs though, if someone slips alcohol in your non alcoholic drink that is still spiking. And in some people can have a very similar effect on then to being spiked with drugs.

CaptainMarvelDanvers · 06/11/2021 22:37

Not exactly spiking but...

I live in a small former mining town, the rate of sexual crimes averaged at about 20 per a thousand residents a year until 2019 and then it’s doubled to 40 per 1000, 41 in 2020. The rate it’s currently at this year is 41.16. It has a higher crime rate than that of Coventry and Croydon, Sheffield is only slightly higher. I mean this is a town that if I told you it’s name, you probably wouldn’t have heard of it.

Violent and sexual crimes are now the largest reported crimes in the area. Higher than Anti-social behaviour and drugs, which have both taken a decrease.

When you look at outcomes for these crimes, it is “Unable to prosecute suspect” over and over again.

There have been notable stranger attacks against women in the town, not all of the attacks were sexual assaults for example one was a middle aged woman, dragged into a field and beaten up. Nothing was stolen, they just wanted to inflict violence.

CaptainMarvelDanvers · 06/11/2021 22:37

Basically I’m saying increase in spiking doesn’t surprise me.

Kite22 · 06/11/2021 22:38

I also suspect it is more common than is actually reported.
I know people it has happened to, and sadly my dd thinks it is a normal thing and just one of those things you have to be aware of when going out..... Sad
Not just clubs either. Her friend was spiked in a pub when they were still at school Angry
The injections reported this year are even more worrying though.

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 06/11/2021 22:41

The city I live in and my son attends university in has had some well publicised alleged spikings recently. I don’t know how prevalent it actually is, and obviously things like Facebook posts can be shared multiple times making things look more widespread than they are, but I know the police were investigating. And students are talking about boycotting certain venues.

Loveduvetdays · 06/11/2021 22:44

My daughter is at Uni and got spiked injected 2 weeks ago. She collapsed and went straight to hospital. They found the injection mark and is now going through the process of having lots of tests and jabs because of needle risk. It's absolutely horrifying. No idea why they do it. She was with friends who were brilliant and looked after her. I now can't stop worrying about her every time she goes out.

SD1978 · 06/11/2021 22:50

Definitely happens, but also difficult to quantify. Some juts is too much alcohol, or concern over consuming drugs voluntarily (mainly ecstasy and cocaine) but feeling less judged turning up to A&E stating they've been spiked.

AutumnLeaves21 · 06/11/2021 22:51

I’ve been spiked with drugs (unsure what). Very scary and I was really lucky that, due to circumstances, I wasn’t harmed. I know several people who’ve been spiked.
I live in a large city, it’s really common. People saying it’s uncommon either live in a small village/town or don’t get out much.

MoveInNightmare · 06/11/2021 22:55

I don't know. When I was in uni people would say they'd been spiked but it was also practice to go out on a empty stomach 5 nights in a row. Anytime anyone was ever too drunk we'd wheel out the 'I think I was spiked'

We've all been on holiday or somewhere, your hot, your dehydrated, you've got an empty stomach and 2 glasses really finishes you off. There are definitely times when alcohol affects you differently, your tired, your stressed, your a bit under the weather etc.

One of my friends really was spiked and it was terrifying, she went out with a proper creepy guy (later convicted of rape) and luckily we were hiding on another table. She started acting really strange and we took her home, she ended up having a seizure on the kitchen floor. Ambulance was called and she ended up in hospital. It was really scary, she wasn't acting drunk.

I think it's impossible to say, I don't really get the motivation behind just spiking a randomer. Drugs aren't cheap and it's not easy to get hold of date rape drugs. For all the hundreds of spikes I've heard of I haven't heard of any assaults and whilst I'm sure some were real, I also suspect many were misjudged drinking. And there are also probably people who thought they were drunk and were spiked

Northernsoullover · 06/11/2021 22:56

Around 10 years ago I met friends for prosecco and food at one of their houses. We drank a typical amount, ate and went into town. By 9.30 pm I could barely stand and had to go home.
I text the group the following morning to apologise. I didn't even remember getting home. The group then all said that they had suffered the same fate. Some think we were spiked. Its odd that we all ended up in a blackout. I still can't see how you would spike 4 people though.
Was it dodgy wine? Off the back of a lorry with a ridiculous ABV? Oddest night of my life and I am lucky to have arrived home unscathed.
I've never blacked out before or since. If it had been only me I would have been convinced I was drugged.

ScreamingBeans · 06/11/2021 22:59

No idea why they do it

It's part of their pre-meditated rape plan.
