Gas and electric has more than doubled!

What used to cost me around £1.90 a day in dual fuel has gone up to around £3 - £4 a day. Is this happening with anyone else? All I'm doing is having a bath, doing a load of washing and having the heating on for 30 mins a day. It's insane!

A load of washing a day?

RainbowBriteUk · 04/11/2021 08:28

One load of washing per day. Just 30 mins in the washer.

Mine isn't quite as much as that and I have the heating on for an hour and do 2-3 loads of washing a day. I'm around the £2.50- £3 mark. I have a mid sized 4 bed house.

InDubiousBattle · 04/11/2021 08:30

Who's your energy provider? A load of washing a day is normal for us.

ThatsNotMyReindeer · 04/11/2021 08:37

No cooking? No hot water for washing up? No electrical appliances? I assume with a load of washing day you have a family you?

jimmyhill · 04/11/2021 09:06

One load of washing per day. Just 30 mins in the washer

That's a fast cycle. The eco cycle which takes longer might cost you less.

ponkydonkey · 04/11/2021 09:11

Same it's absolutely awful... my deal ends soon and it's gone up by more than double

HilaryBriss · 04/11/2021 09:20

My monthly DD has almost doubled as well, I have no idea how much that costs me a day although your £3 per day x 31 days in a month is more expensive than my increased DD.

Do you really only have the heating on for 30 mins a day?

MeanMrMustardSeed · 04/11/2021 09:22

Agree with PP. a fast cycle will use more electricity to heat the water and agitate the washing. Use the eco cycle to save money.

AchyFlower · 04/11/2021 09:24

Try eco setting and a shallower bath. If possible a shower may use less hot water depending on to taken

PermanentlyTired03 · 04/11/2021 09:25

Mine went up by about 30%. I'm with Octopus, went onto the variable rate in September as the fixed rate I could change to was nearly 100% more!

user1471462115 · 04/11/2021 09:39

Can you shower instead of having a bath ?

HarrietsChariot · 04/11/2021 09:47

Unfortunately this is the new reality and in all truth it's only going to get more expensive. The cost of transferring people whose supplier collapsed will be passed on to all of us, as will the cost of implementing greener electricity and phasing out natural gas. That's before you consider the wholesale cost of gas in the meantime. If you think it's awful now, it will be worse in a year or two.

MissBattleaxe · 04/11/2021 09:53

This has happened to us. Our bill went up by £75 a month and there's nothing we can do about it. We shopped around it was the same story.

ProudMaiasaura · 04/11/2021 10:05

Given that the suppliers have had to absorb over 250% increase to their cost to provide energy in the last 10 months I'm not surprised that's starting to appear on people's bills.

The latest price cap still isn't as high as the suppliers need it to be which is why so many are going bust so people entering the newest fixed deals which aren't subject to the price cap are going to see a massive jump in their bills - however given the market volatility fixing can still be a sensible option long term.

This is not going to be fixed anytime in the near future - especially as fossil fuels provide the largest part of the electricity created in the UK. Expect incredibly high utility bills for the foreseeable.

CPDubs · 04/11/2021 10:20

We weren’t having the heating on and it was about £3/4 a day. Heating is on low when on, one load of tumble dryer yesterday, no cooking, smart meter showed £8.50. Shock We were with Peoples Energy who went bust and British Gas has taken over. We were told to wait a month or two before swapping. We have an old Georgian townhouse though.

Stellaris22 · 04/11/2021 12:03

Unfortunately with the fragility of supply it’s only going to get worse, it’s going to be an incredibly difficult winter. Industries are going to be very hard hit, which will have a knock on effect on food prices etc. It’s ridiculous that the government haven’t been warning people just how scary the situation is right now in terms of energy supply. Gas and energy rationing is a very real possibility.

WonderWomansBoobs · 04/11/2021 12:42

I'm fixed in until Jan but out of curiosity I checked what deals there was. I'm currently on 120 a month dd. Once this ends its going up to 250!! I cannot afford that at all so no idea what we are going to do.

jcyclops · 04/11/2021 15:28

I'm on a 100% green electricity deal, and I can only assume that the price of uranium U-235, the trees burnt at Drax, and the wind that makes the turbines spin must have shot up enormously.

jcyclops · 04/11/2021 15:43

Leaving the EU meant that the British Government was free to drop the 5% VAT on energy bills (as they immediately did on sanitary products), but instead they have ignored it. If your energy bills have doubled, you will have doubled the amount being collected by the government.

Those on low incomes can still benefit from the £140/year warm home discount on energy bills. but this has not increased for a decade. There is a slight chance this might increase by £10/year next year.

I'm with Octopus, too. My fixed rate runs out in December. My quote for a new 2-year fix is about three times what I'm paying now. I'll risk the standard variable tariff, which is just over 50% more than what I'm paying now.

SirensofTitan · 04/11/2021 15:58

I'm really surprised about the number of times I've seen this thread recently, it's been all over the media for weeks if not months about the huge increases in energy costs as well as loads of threads here

It's worrying that the message isn't getting across that we all need to be aware energy is going to continue to cost more and try to mitigate it now

We're you really unaware of this OP?

coogee · 04/11/2021 16:01

Same here. Thank goodness for the cap!

Guacamole001 · 04/11/2021 16:29

I am with Utility Warehouse. Mine has not increased at all
In fact it is costing me less than this time last year since early in the summer I moved on to their green plan.

Angel2702 · 04/11/2021 16:42

Our deal ended in September. Switched suppliers before the price rose and they have collapsed. No idea what we will do we were paying £107 a month and that was an increase from the £85 we had been paying, no way can we afford to pay the prices quoted. We haven’t put the heating on yet and it’s miserable. Even with slippers and thick socks on I couldn’t feel my toes today.
