I belong to a small ladies club -there’s around 15 of us . We meet for drinks, socials and various other things It’s been decided that we should open a bank account and appoint a treasurer to deal with the money side of things - I might add that we are not talking huge sums here. One of the members said she was happy to be treasurer -she works in accounts. Two of the other members have says they are not happy with her dealing with the money because she lives in a council house, is probably not financially stable and might be “tempted”. Talk about stereo type . I’m pretty sure this hasn’t got back to the person in question. It’s made me so cross -I don’t actually think I want to be a part of it anymore. I haven’t had a chance to talk to anyone else to find out what they think about these comments .

The council property itself is State benefit, and In order to qualify, the occupier also needs be in receipt of other benefits too.

I'm in a HA property that used to be council (so the same thing but owned now by a non profit organisation instead of the council) I am not in receipt of benefits for myself because I work ft but earn nmw. That gives me a low income, not automatically from benefits from earned income
That's why I qualified.
You can be in private rented accommodation and be in receipt of benefits of in council/HA and be ft work with no benefits.

Little bit confused by the responses to my comment here.

If you occupy a council property, then by definition, you cannot afford to support yourself.

The council property itself is State benefit, and In order to qualify, the occupier also needs be in receipt of other benefits too.

If you’re on benefits of any form, you’re demonstrably unable to support yourself - It’s simply a statement of fact.

That's just ignorant.

There is no requirement to be on benefits to quality for a council house.

In some areas these on benefits may be higher up the list than others, but it is not a prerequisite. Many people in social housing are in work and do not receive benefits.

It’s not pleasant. Is she dodgy though? Surely there’s another reason for their hesitation.

Newwifeatnumber10 · 05/11/2021 20:17

Disgusting, utterly disgusting behaviour. I could not be friends with these people.

Both statements are incorrect. Stop spouting shit you know nothing about. You just make yourself look stupid and bigoted. Or was that the look you were going for?

It's s statement of bullshit love. Holding your views out as factual when they are easily disproved with a quick google makes you look incredibly silly.
MushMonster · 05/11/2021 20:30

Not sure this of having a bank account will work here.
They are nasty.
I would stick to keep my money and pay for my own drinks and so on rather than sharing with them.

Mydogmylife · 05/11/2021 20:34

You sound absolutely awful

I occupy a Housing Association property via the council .... I did not have to be on benefits to qualify nor do I claim any benefits (beyond child related benefits that every parent is entitled to). I pay rent, council tax and all the bills just like any other rental, I just have a secured tenancy and more security than a private tenant.

Clearly you don't understand how council housing works ...

LittleDandelionClock · 05/11/2021 23:30

@SheikhMaraca WTAF are you on about? Are you one of these clueless individuals that I mentioned earlier, who assumes everyone who lives in social housing is on benefits and gets the house for free?

As a number of posters have said, what a remarkably stupid and ignorant and ill-informed comment.

Seriously, WTAF are you ON about? Confused

You are so unbelievably wrong about all this. Where are you getting this bullshit from?

Thedogscollar · 06/11/2021 00:12

Are you normally this rude, insulting and downright stupid?

No. You really don't - despite what you believe in the Daily Fail.

This may blow your mind but in some parts of the country there is little discernible difference between private and social rent , And some housing association actually give preference to people that work.
