To find this unbelievably discriminatory

I belong to a small ladies club -there’s around 15 of us . We meet for drinks, socials and various other things It’s been decided that we should open a bank account and appoint a treasurer to deal with the money side of things - I might add that we are not talking huge sums here. One of the members said she was happy to be treasurer -she works in accounts. Two of the other members have says they are not happy with her dealing with the money because she lives in a council house, is probably not financially stable and might be “tempted”. Talk about stereo type . I’m pretty sure this hasn’t got back to the person in question. It’s made me so cross -I don’t actually think I want to be a part of it anymore. I haven’t had a chance to talk to anyone else to find out what they think about these comments .

They're basing the thought that the woman might (emphasis on might) not be financially stable. Which is a massive assumption and bloody insulting.

Financially stable people get 'tempted' and steal. It's not exclusive to council dwellers.

MrsSkylerWhite · 03/11/2021 20:52

If this is real, just wow.

DerAlteMann · 03/11/2021 21:10

If she works in accounts then clearly her employers trust her with money.

WonderfulYou · 03/11/2021 21:24

Are they volunteering themselves?

I’d persuade the other women not to do it and get them to do it instead. I bet they’ll change their minds soon enough.

I wouldn’t tell her what they said as it will make her feel uncomfortable.

It’s overwhelmingly less likely though.

If she were financially independent, then she wouldn’t be occupying a councIl property. To be doing so, she is demonstrably unable to support herself and I can understand why the others do not wish to have her managing their finances.

Hotdogswithmustard · 05/11/2021 12:02

They sound quite thick.

Heckythump1 · 05/11/2021 12:04

I can't believe 2% of voters which works out to be nearly TEN people, think you're being unreasonable!

Hankunamatata · 05/11/2021 12:05

wow

joangray38 · 05/11/2021 12:49

With their bigotry they have unintentionally raised a valid point - two signatures should be needed to protect the account holder and the club itself from accusations of financial mismanagement. Maybe one of them could volunteer as they raised the issue.

melj1213 · 05/11/2021 13:55

What utter bullshit. Living in a council property does not mean you are unable to support yourself Hmm

I live in a Housing Association property because as a single person on a low (but manageable) wage I cannot get a mortgage. Private rents and HA rents are pretty much equitable where I live but the HA property has secure tenancy whereas private renting leaves you at the whim of the landlord - why would I put myself in a less secure position just so people wouldn't judge the association of living in a HA property?

Tailendofsummer · 05/11/2021 14:00

@iklboogiemaninthecloset

Whatever it is they are entitled to think that.

Replace 'council house' with an ethnicity. Are they still 'entitled' to that opinion? That all people of that kind are potential thieves?

Everyone is entitled to an opinion on everything, however abhorrent we might find that opinion. We don't have thought crimes yet. Though Scotland is coming pretty close at the moment.
logsonlogsoff · 05/11/2021 14:01

Just tell them that they are ignorant and that there are plenty of people living in affordable accommodation like council housing with both parents working and paying their own rent and bills! Cheeky fuckers.

logsonlogsoff · 05/11/2021 14:04

‘ If she were financially independent, then she wouldn’t be occupying a councIl property. To be doing so, she is demonstrably unable to support herself’

That’s crap. I know a lot of people in public sector jobs who would struggle to buy a house or afford private rent in naice areas. But they can afford to rent a council property while raising g a family or saving to try to buy something.
In fact, that’s exactly what my parents - a bookkeeper and an electrician - did for the first 12 years of my life.

RockinHorseShit · 05/11/2021 14:11

Wow Shock

YADNBU

What a bunch of nasty assed snobs. I really couldn't waste my time socialising with people like that & would be telling them why🤢

tigger1001 · 05/11/2021 16:49

"wouldn’t be occupying a councIl property. To be doing so, she is demonstrably unable to support herself and I can understand why the others do not wish to have her managing their finances."

Jesus! Really??

You do realise lots of people from lots of different backgrounds live in social housing? And support themselves?

What an ignorant comment.

tigger1001 · 05/11/2021 16:53

I would say though that two signatories is always a good idea on group monies. It protects everyone, including the treasurer.

TruJay · 05/11/2021 17:19

Wow!
I’m not surprised though, I remember being invited to a sleepover at my friend’s house, they lived in a big private house and I lived on the council estate.
The morning after at breakfast, her mum said to me “I must say TruJay, had I known where you came from I would never have let you in my house, never mind sleepover.” Shock she then went on to complement my behavior and manners and tell me how I was the most well behaved child they’d ever had stay over.
I thought it was a nice complement so took the silver candlesticks out of my bag before I went home Grin
Seriously though, I’ve had this discrimination my whole life, people with this view are disgusting. And in my experience whenever I went into town shopping with my friends (all from the massive houses in the private areas) it was always them shoplifting. My mum always warned me to immediately leave the shop if anyone I was with starting to steal as it would be me getting the blame, the ‘little council scruff’.

Did you call them out on their despicable view? I wouldn’t have been able to hold my tongue.

Bettysnow · 05/11/2021 17:42

No i don't think you should leave if you enjoy the activities etc however i would not let this go unchallenged. You need to take this idiot down a peg or two and stand up for whats right.

Blossomtoes · 05/11/2021 17:50

What a load of utter bollocks. The vast majority of people living in social housing hold down jobs. Where does this nonsense come from?

BiscuitLover09876 · 05/11/2021 17:51

Who are these people? This is horrendous!

LittleDandelionClock · 05/11/2021 17:59

@bagpuss90 Is this for real? Shock

Mind you, the fact that some people are dense enough to believe that people in council houses get the house 'for free,' I can believe these people will be that ignorant or discriminatory.

Because like, NO-ONE with more money than they need ever steals do they? Hmm

Garriet · 05/11/2021 18:07

Astonishingly ignorant.

SheikhMaraca · 05/11/2021 19:55

Little bit confused by the responses to my comment here.

If you occupy a council property, then by definition, you cannot afford to support yourself.

The council property itself is State benefit, and In order to qualify, the occupier also needs be in receipt of other benefits too.

If you’re on benefits of any form, you’re demonstrably unable to support yourself - It’s simply a statement of fact.

Maverickess · 05/11/2021 20:09

Why must people be judged on their income and assets and found wanting if they don't reach some imaginary standard instead of the actual person they are?
Being financially independent doesn't automatically mean you're of higher moral fibre, even if it were true that anyone in council or social housing isn't financially independent. It means they're paying lower rent, or more accurately fairer rent that matches their earned income (in an awful lot of cases) instead of inflated rents that outstrip the earning of lower income jobs. It has to be that way because many jobs aren't seen worthy enough to pay a wage you can live on and own your own home with.

Little bit confused that you think everyone in “council” / Housing Association properties are claiming benefits.

That’s why I said you’re ignorant. It’s demonstrably untrue.
