Blatantly posting for traffic.

If you didn't grow up in England... do you know the music man song?

Or is there anyone who did grow up in England and doesn't know this song?

There's a good reason why I really need to know this, I promise.

I know it well because I used to live near a pub that had a regular karaoke night, and the bloke that run it used to sing it himself to close the night every time. Not sure I'd know it otherwise, but maybe I would.

Scottish, late 50s.

Knew it from my childhood. Went down a treat when I ran Brownies.

I’d definitely join in, complete with actions.

Never heard of the Black Lace version. But then I give them a huge body swerve!

MedusasBadHairDay · 03/11/2021 11:35

@Pedalpushers

It's well enough known that Ocado did a version of it for their marketing years ago.

Oca oca ocado ocado ocado groceries from Waitrose oca ocado

And thanks to that I get it stuck in my head every time I see an Ocado van
AnkleDeep · 03/11/2021 11:36

This has taken me back!

We can play the dam busters ... (hands form goggles over eyes)

TrashyPanda · 03/11/2021 11:37

Move to Scotland - we are Ocado free!

Hotelhelp · 03/11/2021 11:40

What a tune

Not for long...
BeyondShrinks · 03/11/2021 11:46

Wales, 35 and yep I know it

It's a common drunk song, where new instruments are created randomly Grin

And yes, I know it as sung by black lace too, not just the drunk version

While we're recommending songs, there is a special place in my heart for "star-trekking"...

MacTootBlowsonHisBagpipes · 03/11/2021 11:53

I think most Scottish people between the ages of 25 and 45 would know it from Sheila and Artie on the Singing Kettle.

"Oot an' oot an' oot an' in, oot an' in, oot an' in" will now be stuck in my head for the rest of the day.

GraveyardPlotsAndDoomedScreams · 03/11/2021 12:05

I'd definitely sing back to you OP (I'm English).

I think the slosh might be dying out though. I don't think people under about 50 know it.

vajingleberry · 03/11/2021 12:06

@MacTootBlowsonHisBagpipes

I bloody love the Singing Kettle. Have some in laws from Scotland and they used to play the tapes (not dating myself at all here!!!) to their son.

Cilla. I was there the day she fell off stage at the Magnum in Irvine. Poor thing never got back onstage after that. That was the death knell for the Singing Kettle. Now it’s FunBox and just not the same. Artie still does a wee show here and there under the Kettle umbrella, but it’s not the same either.
MacTootBlowsonHisBagpipes · 03/11/2021 15:47

Ah yes Cilla not Sheila!

londonrach · 03/11/2021 15:59

Of course I know it as does DD and tbh I think everyone does but not something you discuss as an adult though

the80sweregreat · 03/11/2021 19:17

Yes, it is an old song with actions too !
Not heard it in years though !
