AIBU to think that Boris was inspirational in his speech earlier, setting out the problem that we face and bravely suggesting solutions.

@Marelle

It isn’t fixable IMO. Have you seen the amount of plastic tat in just a single branch of B&M? Even posters on here talking about buying volumes of tat for Christmas that will end up in landfill. People can’t stop and won’t stop consuming.
Exactly - it needs to be stopped by the UK government stopping imports of so much plastic Halloween and Christmas tat. I went to my local garden centre yesterday and was horrified at the tat - and it's reasonably tasteful tat. There will be far worse tat elsewhere.

Hard choices have to be made, and people won't make them, they have to be imposed.

justasking111 · 01/11/2021 17:22

Just listening to Greta outside she's sincere. The delegates on the Rome jolly and now the Glasgow one are a waste of space with their snouts in the trough. It's us ordinary folks who will drive anything forward while the wealthy carry on conning us where they can

PollyPeePants · 01/11/2021 17:32

Apart from anything else OP (and by anything else I mean the very long list of shortcomings of 'our' PM - liar, cheat, hypocrite, cronyist, incompetent, to name a few) - do you actually, for one minute, believe he wrote that speech?!

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 01/11/2021 17:37

@OakPine

Hypocritical bastards! Politicians, The Royal Family, all the hangers on....Hundreds of private jets have flown in. I've seen several motorcades go past (I'm in Edinburgh) What would have been really inspirational is for them to have chartered a train from Rome to Glasgow!

Not unexpected of course but I'm so annoyed I'll say it again "Hypocritical bastards!"

They could have done it wherever it was they had the G20 rather than fly from there to Glasgow or on Teams
robinsinthespring · 01/11/2021 17:40

I can remember it being 1 minute to midnight when I was at school in the early seventies.

jgw1 · 01/11/2021 17:43
@jgw1 No. It just shows how far a rich white elitist from Eton can get in fooling a nation where approximately 40% of the electorate still want to doff their cap at the rich landowner.
Doesn't it show that mobility is alive and well if someone with apparently so few talents can rise to the top?

A speech isn't just the written words it is the style and delivery too.

True @jgw1 - ok, you've won me over. He's one helluva guy 😂😂

lightand · 01/11/2021 17:47

Some of us older people have literally been listening to potential climate catastrophe speeches, for more than 30 years.

justasking111 · 01/11/2021 17:48

Bezos and Gates aren't buying enormous amounts of farmland because they want to sit on a tractor. They want to orchestrate a massive change in farming methods and products

I have done it for you to save you the bother.

hotmeatymilk · 01/11/2021 17:52

YABU he's a twat
Grin first response nails it.

It isn’t one minute to midnight anyway. It’s fucking 5am and we’re munching on a kebab over a bin

Keep? He’s only one election. I’ll be impressed if he wins three in a row. Then we can talk.

@jgw1 Are you being deliberately dense? Or have I missed the sarcasm in your initial post?
You think that a rich white man with no merit who is as thick as a plank getting the job of Prime Minister is an example of social mobility??!

RestingStitchFace · 01/11/2021 18:48

I'd have more time for this post if Boris and his mates hadn't just voted to dump raw sewage into our rivers and seas....

You seem to be forgetting that he has been elected as an MP many times, was Mayor of London and won the Tory leadership election as well. People keep voting for him because he delivers what they want.

If James Callaghan had invested properly in the countries waste water system then we wouldn't be in this mess.
OP posts:
FreedomFaith · 01/11/2021 19:10
@FreedomFaith no that would not be a positive message!
But we are obviously going to have to change. This will happen one way or another. One way= we do it fairly, slowly, inclusively, including developing countries.
The other = we wait for climate catastrophies and eventually get flooded our of our homes etc.

We're gonna have to do it. I prefer the first way, at least the planet will survive.

I know we're on the same side sorry I work in this area and am having a bad day today about Flop26 😡
I would prefer the first too I really would. I just have no faith in any government unfortunately, or the majority of businesses. I hope I'm proven wrong but I can just see our future being that of any disaster film.
