Struggling to find quirky wedding venue in NW

My partner and I have decided to get married next year. I've been married before, he's not. My first wedding was in 1997 and was a pretty traditional church affair. For our wedding, we'd like something really informal, non-traditional and we'd love to embrace the whole 'Anything Goes' ethos. We both love live music and have lots of connections with musicians/bands etc so music will play a big part. We love gigs, festivals, films, museums etc and have loads of brilliant, easy-going friends so we just want to provide a great, happy gathering for them.

The problem we have is finding a venue without spending an absolute fortune. We've decided to do away with a formal meal altogether to reduce costs and hopefully be able to invite more guests.

I think it would be a late afternoon, celebrant-led ceremony for all guests (around 100) with informal speeches and toasts but no formal meal. A bit of time for drinks and photos, and then straight on to an early evening buffet/food and live entertainment and music for the rest of the night.

We're currently looking at hiring a tipi but I'm nervous about what would happen if it rained. It would be gorgeous on a late summer evening as people could mill about outside and we could have it in the middle of nowhere with no noise restrictions but we'd also have to actually find a piece of suitable land or grounds which adds to the cost.

We're also looking at quirky venues in or around Manchester. They don't need to be licenced wedding venues as we will be using a celebrant so it can be literally anywhere, but this is making it difficult to know where to look! There's a couple of distilleries that offer wedding spaces that look very cool, and some of the old buildings like the Albert Hall or the Victoria Baths are amazing but too expensive. Some of the historic Manchester University buildings also host weddings which would be great as I studied there many moons ago but to be able to invite 100 people to these kind of spaces is ££££.

Do any NW people have any ideas of largish, quirky spaces that could be used for a big party that wouldn't cost the earth. We really want something a bit different that people will remember rather than the usual hotel/hall but I really need help to think outside the box. Typing in 'unusual wedding venues' into Google still just brings up obvious venues for weddings. What we need really is an impressive space that isn't an obvious choice for weddings but that can easily be transformed and used for one.

Any ideas, or has anyone done something similar?

Whitworth art gallery?

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 31/10/2021 13:38

Stop googling for "unusual wedding venues" then, and start looking for interesting buildings, open air spaces, industrial buildings that are empty etc. Places that maybe haven't been used for weddings, so are less likely to hike their prices.

Friends had their reception at the Deaf Institute, you could probably do the whole thing there.

I know it’s not Manchester but the Baltic triangle in Liverpool has some lovely places like constellations or camp and furnace.

PinkiOcelot · 31/10/2021 13:43

No venue suggestions, but just wanted to say, that sounds mint.

Kanteena in Lancaster? Bit further away, but v cool and unusual. kanteena.co.uk/weddings/

Also, Fairfield Social Club in Manchester (if you don't mind a grungy vibe) www.instagram.com/fscmcr/?hl=en

Theres loads! Three Little Words, Gorilla, Portico Library, Christie's Bistro at Manchester Uni, Castlefield Rooms, FiveFourStudios...

NothingSafe · 31/10/2021 13:47

Oh no I'm sorry, I've just read FSC don't do weddings any more :(

1830 Warehouse at MOSI? Not sure how much it'd cost, but for an evening-y thing maybe not too much. www.hirethescienceandindustrymuseum.com/event-spaces/1830-building/

FiveFourStudios could be so good! All that gorgeous light space.

A tipi in the rain will be perfect for the anything goes vibe.

Duplobinlorry · 31/10/2021 13:49

Landmark trust is good for interesting places to stay - I can’t see what you couldn’t host a party if allowed.
Try looking for interesting party Venus rather than wedding Venus.
Some camping / clamping places can be hired out and have a central barn for gathering.
Good luck! And congratulations 🙂

Potcallingkettle · 31/10/2021 13:50

Lots of places in the Peak District advertise fields for venues and then add your own marquee or similar.

Hbh17 · 31/10/2021 13:51

Palm House, Sefton Park, Liverpool?

AnyFucker · 31/10/2021 13:57

The Manchester Monastery at Gorton.

bellissimiaow · 31/10/2021 13:58

Oh thank you thank you wonderful people, you've already given me lots to look at!

Whitworth Art Gallery was one of the first I looked at, they have an amazing glass box-type cafe area. I actually don't think they've got back to me with a price yet, so I need to chase that up.

Three Little Words looks cool as well, I saw that yesterday - it's owned by Manchester Gin (one of my fav gins ha!) so I'm waiting for them to get back to me too.

Keep the suggestions coming I reaaaally appreciate it Flowers thanks so much xx

Victoria Warehouse seems to tick all those boxes? I looked at MOSI for mine but it was a fortune.

Allywill · 31/10/2021 14:00

Bashall barn clitheroe. Lots of “barn” venues around rossendale, Pendle etc that would work well for live music.

iklboogiemaninthecloset · 31/10/2021 14:04

The old Masonic Hall in the city centre is a good venue.

The Venue in Urmston does good packages & deals. Easy to get to from city centre & surrounding areas as well.

I’ve been to a wedding in the room with the Lowrys at Manchester art gallery, Gorton monastery was also a cool venue, but may be quite dear?

lastqueenofscotland · 31/10/2021 14:05

Also I think you can get married at Quarry Bank??

Nomorecoco · 31/10/2021 14:06

Is Leeds too far? Royal Armouries does weddings/events.

userxx · 31/10/2021 14:08

Really! That would be lovely, almost makes me want to get married.

lastqueenofscotland · 31/10/2021 14:09

Just checked on the NT website and you can indeed still get married at quarry bank

userxx · 31/10/2021 14:09

The Bowdon Rooms just outside altrincham is a decent little venue.

SwedishEdith · 31/10/2021 14:12

Was going to suggest the Deaf Institute as well. Don't have a tipi in the middle of nowhere - think how people have to get there and where they'll have to stay.
