Struggling to find quirky wedding venue in NW

My partner and I have decided to get married next year. I've been married before, he's not. My first wedding was in 1997 and was a pretty traditional church affair. For our wedding, we'd like something really informal, non-traditional and we'd love to embrace the whole 'Anything Goes' ethos. We both love live music and have lots of connections with musicians/bands etc so music will play a big part. We love gigs, festivals, films, museums etc and have loads of brilliant, easy-going friends so we just want to provide a great, happy gathering for them.

The problem we have is finding a venue without spending an absolute fortune. We've decided to do away with a formal meal altogether to reduce costs and hopefully be able to invite more guests.

I think it would be a late afternoon, celebrant-led ceremony for all guests (around 100) with informal speeches and toasts but no formal meal. A bit of time for drinks and photos, and then straight on to an early evening buffet/food and live entertainment and music for the rest of the night.

We're currently looking at hiring a tipi but I'm nervous about what would happen if it rained. It would be gorgeous on a late summer evening as people could mill about outside and we could have it in the middle of nowhere with no noise restrictions but we'd also have to actually find a piece of suitable land or grounds which adds to the cost.

We're also looking at quirky venues in or around Manchester. They don't need to be licenced wedding venues as we will be using a celebrant so it can be literally anywhere, but this is making it difficult to know where to look! There's a couple of distilleries that offer wedding spaces that look very cool, and some of the old buildings like the Albert Hall or the Victoria Baths are amazing but too expensive. Some of the historic Manchester University buildings also host weddings which would be great as I studied there many moons ago but to be able to invite 100 people to these kind of spaces is ££££.

Do any NW people have any ideas of largish, quirky spaces that could be used for a big party that wouldn't cost the earth. We really want something a bit different that people will remember rather than the usual hotel/hall but I really need help to think outside the box. Typing in 'unusual wedding venues' into Google still just brings up obvious venues for weddings. What we need really is an impressive space that isn't an obvious choice for weddings but that can easily be transformed and used for one.

Any ideas, or has anyone done something similar?

@NiceTwin

Somebody has already said it but I came on to say Victoria Baths.
Vic Baths is £4.5k ish just for hire, not including food and stuff, so out of OP's budget unfortunately - cos it's the coolest wedding venue ever (I'm definitely not biased because I got married there or anything... Grin)

Sorry...me again!! It's also possible that by the time your wedding comes around, the Law Commission review on marriage in England might have been finalised, and you may be able to have the celebrant do the whole kit and caboodle! That's IF they hurry up with the legislation 🤷‍♀️ 🤞🤞🤞🤞 Obviously if they are still 'legislating' then you'll need to pop into your registry office for a quick 2x2 (which you're already aware of ♥️)

Congratulations though...such an exciting time to be wedding planning 🥰

I also came on to suggest Victoria baths and at least there others have beat me to it!

This one is maybe too far for you but it has ‘quirky’ right there in the marketing…

What about Torr Vale Mill in New Mills. Big old crumbling cotton mill, really cool place. And you can have photos out on the walkway that goes across the ravine of river goyt…

Definitely quarry bank mill! We looked and it was lovely and cheap too (this was in 2015 though) we decided on Adlington Hall which was beautiful and quirky

PinkGiraffe1 · 31/10/2021 19:28

Gorton Monastery (East Manchester)
Royal Exchange Theatre (middle of city centre)
MOSI (outskirts of city centre)

Also, again further but very accessible, Chester Zoo do weddings.

Peccary · 31/10/2021 19:33

Manchester art gallery is a great space, I wanted Chester zoo but DH wasn't sold. We gor married at Manchester Town Hall. Not in your triangle but Windy Harbour in Glossop throws a good bash with beautiful views. I've been to a wedding at Victoria Warehouse, its great if you want a blank canvas

Friends said they went to a lovely wedding in the Peak District in a youth hostel.

The couple had rented the whole place for the weekend so everyone could stay and apparently the scenery was beautiful.

I think they said the ceremony was outside - not sure if the couple had officially got married before it.

@CelebrateAndDream

Have you booked your celebrant yet OP? Asking for a friend (me...I'm the friend...I'm a celebrant 🤣🙌🏼🤣)

Bashall Barn
The Wellbeing Farm near Bolton

YoungGiftedPlump · 31/10/2021 19:53

Isnt the most important thing that travel is minimised for friends and family?

No-one wants to have to stay overnight in the arse end of nowhere so that the wedding couple can have a quirky venue.

Needs the be central, close to home or at a push have a budget hotel next door

Bromeliad · 31/10/2021 20:07

I got married at Quarry Bank! It was brilliant, they couldn't have done more for us and the food was fab. Highly recommended.

Alternatively Parkgate farm weddings if you want a Tipi wedding?

Bromeliad · 31/10/2021 20:09

I should say that one of the advantages of Quarry Bank is the proximity to the airport. Plenty of cheap hotels only a short taxi ride away.

@CelebrateAndDream

Oh and have you looked at www.cheshirewoodlandweddings.com/#gallery

A STUNNING wedding venue that I can highly recommend 🥰👍

Oooo, I know someone who's getting married there this year. It looks ace.

Ariadneonion · 31/10/2021 20:54

Somewhere like Kro up by the University? We've booked the whole space out for a minimum spend on food and the bar (it was a few years ago, but worth asking). Personally, if I was looking at 100 people and wanted live music, I'd be tempted to ring around the independent pubs and bars in Manchester city centre to see if I could take over part or all for an afternoon/evening.

AWryGiraffe · 31/10/2021 20:54

Gibson Mill you can have a band! It's a completely gorgeous space. (I got married there).

BUT - there's some other considerations I.e it's an off grid venue so you'd need their package that includes a generator, you need to think about getting guests there and back - if it's late, you might wanna hire a venue if you've got older guests (longish walk through a woodland to the town, no buses, no phone reception), if you've got 100 people there's only a few loos etc.

I love it though. Such a special place.

AWryGiraffe · 31/10/2021 20:55

By hire a venue I meant minibus...!

actiongirl1978 · 31/10/2021 20:57

Hi OP haven't RTFT but we got married at Manchester Art gallery in the glass extension. Had a fabulous evening celebration for 80 people. Owned by the council so was much cheaper than lots of venues.

Somewhere like the Castle Hotel on Oldham Street would be great.
iklboogiemaninthecloset · 31/10/2021 21:27

Kro is lovely. Our friends had their son's christening there. But it was quite expensive then & that was sixteen years ago.

Blueeyedgirl21 · 31/10/2021 22:48
