Struggling to find quirky wedding venue in NW

My partner and I have decided to get married next year. I've been married before, he's not. My first wedding was in 1997 and was a pretty traditional church affair. For our wedding, we'd like something really informal, non-traditional and we'd love to embrace the whole 'Anything Goes' ethos. We both love live music and have lots of connections with musicians/bands etc so music will play a big part. We love gigs, festivals, films, museums etc and have loads of brilliant, easy-going friends so we just want to provide a great, happy gathering for them.

The problem we have is finding a venue without spending an absolute fortune. We've decided to do away with a formal meal altogether to reduce costs and hopefully be able to invite more guests.

I think it would be a late afternoon, celebrant-led ceremony for all guests (around 100) with informal speeches and toasts but no formal meal. A bit of time for drinks and photos, and then straight on to an early evening buffet/food and live entertainment and music for the rest of the night.

We're currently looking at hiring a tipi but I'm nervous about what would happen if it rained. It would be gorgeous on a late summer evening as people could mill about outside and we could have it in the middle of nowhere with no noise restrictions but we'd also have to actually find a piece of suitable land or grounds which adds to the cost.

We're also looking at quirky venues in or around Manchester. They don't need to be licenced wedding venues as we will be using a celebrant so it can be literally anywhere, but this is making it difficult to know where to look! There's a couple of distilleries that offer wedding spaces that look very cool, and some of the old buildings like the Albert Hall or the Victoria Baths are amazing but too expensive. Some of the historic Manchester University buildings also host weddings which would be great as I studied there many moons ago but to be able to invite 100 people to these kind of spaces is ££££.

Do any NW people have any ideas of largish, quirky spaces that could be used for a big party that wouldn't cost the earth. We really want something a bit different that people will remember rather than the usual hotel/hall but I really need help to think outside the box. Typing in 'unusual wedding venues' into Google still just brings up obvious venues for weddings. What we need really is an impressive space that isn't an obvious choice for weddings but that can easily be transformed and used for one.

Any ideas, or has anyone done something similar?

Oh and if you need a videographer for a real cut down price, my DH is doing reduced rates next year to build up his portfolio. Grin

Rivi brewery is so good 🙌🏻

Been to a wedding here. Great venue. As it is a rugby club the couple had a bouncy castle on the field outside as well as a hog roast for food

Oh and have you looked at https://www.cheshirewoodlandweddings.com/#galleryy*

ITA - we went to a wedding there recently in the woods, then games all afternoon like archery, air rifle shooting, crazy golf; a bird of prey display, and barbecue, eaten in the open sided barn (which I believe can be closed) and a live band in the evening!

Victoria Warehouse?

HappyDays40 · 02/11/2021 21:11

@blueyeeyedgirl21

We went to Rivi Tap camping at beginning of the half term.

Might be a bit too far from the NW.

Simply Fields in East Lancashire.

My friend recently had a wedding at The Old Grammar School in Middleton. It was a gorgeous, quirky venue! She didn't have a traditional ceremony, they did the official bit at the registry office beforehand and just had a blessing at the venue. It wasn't too formal. It was perfect. Lovely setting. They had the tables out for a meal but in the evening, they had just an informal buffet which was perfect.

Went to one at Bowland Brewery that was lovely.

Haven’t seen it mentioned so far but I went to a wedding at Band on the Wall in the Northern Quarter a few years ago and it was great. Looks like it’s currently closed for refurbishment but due to open again shortly. Might be worth a look. I got married in Manchester city centre and think that it’s a great option - easily accessible and accommodation available for so many budgets. Good luck!

Thanks again for the suggestions, I've fired off so many emails to venues over the last few days I can't keep up with the replies!

My current favourites are the amazing raised glass area at the Whitworth Art Gallery on Oxford Rd (but they haven't replied with a price yet despite me badgering them) and Lock 91 down on Deansgate Locks, who will hire out either one of their floors or the whole place for a pretty reasonable price.

The Portico Library looks absolutely gorgeous to actually get married so that's a possibility but it would mean only a few people there, and then just a party at another venue. Whereas ideally we'd like a celebrant ceremony for everyone at one venue (and we'll just do the legal part in the registry office the day before)

Still waiting for loads to get back to me. Going off the tipi idea (rain) LOVE Victoria Baths and am waiting for their prices but suspect they might also be too pricey.

I've just heard back from Warehouse 1830 at MOSI which I think seems reasonable (unless I've misread it) so that could be good.

All the Cheshire barns are ridiculously expensive - £8k (no food or drink!) to hire a cow shed for the day is bonkers but it has made me think I need to buy a barn and start a wedding business Grin

Top price so far is for King St Townhouse which came in at £15k SmileWine

A friend got married here - really lovely

Also Gorton Monastry, Manchester Museum (if it's reopened), Christies, Contact Theatre

I was going to suggest Owen House too

The Old Courts in Wigan is a lovely quirky venue

As the name would suggest, it’s an old courthouse and the main room used for weddings still has the docks - which tend to seat the top table. It’s a not for profit now, so the prices are very very reasonable

Just a quick update, we've been to visit the Whitworth Art Gallery today and it's as stunning as it looks online! We had a coffee in the glass box which is a cafe during the day and it was just gorgeous.

The mixture of the historic old red building of the gallery itself and the modern glass and steel of the new section really appeals to me and looks amazing, plus the gardens are gorgeous and of course the art and sculptures inside provide something a bit different for guests to have a look at if they get bored! There's even a skateboarding area at the front for anyone who fancies polishing up their skills on the day Grin

It's part of Manchester Uni which means a lot to me, is in the city so close to Premier Inns etc for guests and easily accessible by car or train. Best of all it's not even too pricey.

Very excited now! Just need to decide on a date Smile

I have no idea if it's hireable but escape to freight island? There's space for live music

Sugarcube84 · 15/01/2022 21:49

I was coming back to digest this which I’d come across but seen you’ve decided, good luck!!

The Palm House in Sefton Park, Liverpool

Foxglovers · 15/01/2022 23:13

Isn’t there an old empty swimming baths near Manchester that do weddings?
Alternatively the palm house in Liverpool? I know it’s not Manchester but it’s on the right side of Liverpool
