Making up a new nickname for myself?

Hi, my name is Patrick. I've been thinking of introducing myself as Pax the last few months, however it is not a common nickname for Patrick where I'm from (Ireland). Has anyone ever encountered a Patrick ever going by Pax or not? I'm just not fond of the other shortenings of Patrick. Thanks.

I would say if you try and do this at work among friends you might earn the nickname Paxo .

momtoboys · 29/10/2021 20:20

I wouldn't say you are being unreasonable if that's how you feel but Patrick is a good, strong name. You don't need to be Pax.

ItsDinah · 29/10/2021 20:48

Please, not Pax. If it's to stop people using abbreviations you don't like, you could try introducing yourself as "Patrick or Padraig,I don't mind which". You can say you've always used Patrick because all the nicknames from it are already in use by other family members.

TaraR2020 · 29/10/2021 21:51

Do you have a middle name you prefer?

Saoirse82 · 30/10/2021 08:29

I'm in Ireland (North) and all the Patrick's I know under 50 are Patrick or Paddy. If you don't like Paddy why not just stick to Patrick? I know there's a million Patrick's here but I still like the name. I've never heard Pax as a nn for Patrick either, it sounds a bit try to much. And definitely not Patch, that's ridiculous. I doubt there's one Patrick in the whole country that gets Patch, people would laugh in your face Grin.

P-dizzle?

@ChuckGarabedian

P-dizzle?

I think it would be a lot easier to do this when you are making some other kind of "fresh start" like starting a new job or moving to a new place. I'm the opposite of you - I've always been known by a short form of my name and would actually quite like to use the full name, but it seems weird to ask people who know me already to change suddenly.

For what it's worth I quite like Pax, and its meaning.

jcyclops · 30/10/2021 16:38

You could go slightly foreign and slightly inaccurately:
Paco
Pancho
Patton
Patricio
Patrice
Paris

I’ve known a dog called patch.
I quite like Pax.

FlowerFlour · 30/10/2021 17:02

How about Slithery...? Grin

I know a very cool and popular Patch in his mid 20s. It's an uncommon nickname but interesting, especially among a sea of Pats and Paddys.

Agree with previous posters, it's easier to make this change when you're moving areas / starting uni / starting a new job.

@ChuckGarabedian

P-dizzle?
He lives in Ireland so P-drizzle would be better.

My 20yr old DS is a Patrick nicknamed "Paxo" initially as a joke bit it stuck.

MissMatty2hats · 30/10/2021 21:30

My uncle went by both Patsy and Pax. My Dad never called him anything but Pax. I never thought much about it really, it was just his name. I also know a man in his thirties who goes by Patch with a brother called Butch!
