Making up a new nickname for myself?

Hi, my name is Patrick. I've been thinking of introducing myself as Pax the last few months, however it is not a common nickname for Patrick where I'm from (Ireland). Has anyone ever encountered a Patrick ever going by Pax or not? I'm just not fond of the other shortenings of Patrick. Thanks.

Is your surname a name you could go by instead? Or a middle name ?

OrIsTheWorldNuts · 29/10/2021 15:43

OP, you could decide not to see it as giving yourself a nickname (as others say, people generally give you one but doesn't mean you can't though).

You can see it as shortening your own name and introducing yourself as that. Pax is close enough to Pat/Patrick. Not different from Ted = Edward or Bob = Robert or Bill = William.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

@ILoveShula

You could shorten it to Prick.

Pax is ok

😂😂😂

My dad is Padraig no one called him Paudie or whatever that was

I don't like Pax or PJ

What about your surname, like Morse as he hates Endeavour?

WaterAndTheWild · 29/10/2021 16:06

Patrick on its own is a lovely name - do you not want to stick with that?

Keane900 · 29/10/2021 16:21

Yeah I mostly go by Patrick, but sometimes people I meet automatically start calling me Pat or Paddy. I don't want to be seen as uptight by telling them to call me Patrick

I tell people not to use contractions of my name. It's not uptight.

Patch? Seriously? Get outta here! How many grown men do you know who are named frickin patch!

OP if you like Pax, then go for it. I prefer Rick… personally. Or Paddy even. But not bloody Patch.

HaveringWavering · 29/10/2021 16:28

Wasn’t my there a Robin Williams film called Patch Adams?

flatclearancehelp · 29/10/2021 16:33

Pax is a good name, memorable, unique, snappy.

There's no reason at all that you can't create your own nickname as other posters have declared. You can call yourself anything you want to be known by.

Start introducing yourself as Pax and if anyone asks how you got the name look vague, reason lost in the mist of time.

secretbookcase · 29/10/2021 16:40

It works as a nickname for Patrick. You just need to introduce yourself to new friends and colleagues as Pax and ask old friends and family if they'd adopt the name but be very forgiving if they forget. I like it.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 29/10/2021 16:42

Lolling at tam-Pax

To be fair there's quite a few of us on here who know one!!
vikalpa · 29/10/2021 17:02

Go for it! If you like 'Pax' then why not, it's your life!

2bazookas · 29/10/2021 17:11

How about a diminutive of Patrick, "Prick"?

JaneJeffer · 29/10/2021 17:14

Give over!

HomeSliceKnowsBest · 29/10/2021 17:16

Rick or Ricky are nice.

HomeSliceKnowsBest · 29/10/2021 17:18

Or Trick/Tricky? Please not Patch!

tobedtoMN · 29/10/2021 17:19

Is it in homage to Jeremy Paxman?

Just teasing!

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 29/10/2021 17:20
