Making up a new nickname for myself?

Hi, my name is Patrick. I've been thinking of introducing myself as Pax the last few months, however it is not a common nickname for Patrick where I'm from (Ireland). Has anyone ever encountered a Patrick ever going by Pax or not? I'm just not fond of the other shortenings of Patrick. Thanks.

You do realise you will get the piss taken out of you mercilessly (unless your friends are very forbearing)? I just don't think it would stick

Cuntness · 29/10/2021 14:06

🤣🤣🤣

DuploSubmarine · 29/10/2021 14:09

Patch or Rick are fine.

I'm Irish too, but living in England now. I love the name Patrick. Pax reminds me of tampax (sorry).

suspiria777 · 29/10/2021 14:10

@SapphosRock

Go for it, just be prepared you'll probably get re-nicknamed Tam-pax

How about changing name completely? If you are moving to a new area or social circle it’s the perfect opportunity.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 29/10/2021 14:11

@Keane900

Pax of Cigarettes
so when the credits roll at the end of the film will see a glimpse of Patrick "Pax of Cigarettes" Keane - director of nicknames.

worth it

*we'll
not will
obv

@Keane900

I've never really come across Patch before? Would that be acceptable for a grown man?
No. It sounds like a puppy.
Keane900 · 29/10/2021 14:16

I wouldn't really be moving to any new area. I don't know if I'd be able to go through with changing my name. Too many people know me as Patrick, so it would be complicated

Pax? Like the ikea wardrobe ?😂

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 29/10/2021 14:20

DH had a colleague who had hippy parents.
They named him Kid, it's on his birth certificate.
Their reasoning was that he could just pick his own name when he was 18.
But he never did.
He's in his mid 50s now and he's still a Kid🤣🤣

Mynameismargot · 29/10/2021 14:21

I quite like Podge as a nickname for Patrick(or maybe it is more of a nickname for Padriag?) but it sounds nice and friendly to me. All of the Podges I have known have been lovely.

TaraR2020 · 29/10/2021 14:23

Trix?

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 29/10/2021 14:23

There are quite a few Irish Ricks, but again it might be more of an old man name to you as I'm in my 50s and most of the ones that I know are around my age.

Alonelonelyloner · 29/10/2021 14:25

Pax is great!
Do it!

Proudboomer · 29/10/2021 14:25

What is wrong with just being Patrick?
You don’t need to shorten it or give yourself a nickname. Patrick is a nice name in itself.

HemanOrSheRa · 29/10/2021 14:26

DP has a cousin called Padraig or Podge .

Keane900 · 29/10/2021 14:35

I do go by Patrick most of the time. I'm just trying to come up with an alternative nickname for myself for future people I meet

OP posts:
3beesinmybonnet · 29/10/2021 14:35

Could you just invent a middle name for yourself? After all no one's going to check your birth certificate.
People will probably still call you by your current name though.

ChuckGarabedian · 29/10/2021 14:38

You don’t like Paddy either I assume?
Is there a version of your surname or middle name you could go by?

OrIsTheWorldNuts · 29/10/2021 14:39

OP, if you like it, go for it. Just introduce yourself as Pax and everyone will call you that, regardless of what they think. Going by mumsnet, there isn't a name that someone, somewhere doesn't hate. Might as well choose what you like and sod everyone else.

I have to say I thought Pat was the name you didn't like shortened as. Pa sounds rather odd.

Keane900 · 29/10/2021 14:41

Pat, Pa or Paddy I'm not to fond of

CouncilHousedAndViolentBaby · 29/10/2021 14:42

Could you make a nickname out of your surname?

Keane900 · 29/10/2021 14:45

No surname's not an option, I was hoping to use a shortening of my name or nickname that I could use professionally as well.

Keane900 · 29/10/2021 14:45

I work in the Business sector
