I advertised a toy on FB. In pristine condition for £1 (would normally sell new for £8).

Someone living in a very wealthy area has asked me to deliver the toy to them when they know it's a 15 mile round trip. They don't want to know now that I've suggested a few pounds delivery charge for petrol and my time. It would still make the toy half of what it would cost in the shops.

AIBU to be flabbergasted at how some people expect the world to owe them something when they're already getting an amazing deal?

They seem really miffed at my suggestion of a delivery charge. Why on earth would I deliver something for £1 when it would cost me more than that in petrol let alone my time? CF!!! I can't believe the gall of some people.

Unless it’s an expensive item, I just drop y them off at charity shops now …just been messed about too much.
I’ve had no thanks for free items I’ve delivered. Then I had a negative comment on eBay when we had a delay with my Hermes. I explained and refunded the item too. This was for a £5 item. I really can’t be doing with the hassle! Grin

Just experienced the same for a brand new Halloween costume

Buyer: is this still available ?
Me: yes
Buyer: where is collection? (Already on advert)
Me: …… road
Buyer can you deliver and I’ve only got £5 on me
Me: 🙄

So they want me to deliver and be out of pocket. No thanks.

SommerTen · 30/10/2021 19:41

Have reported my post as wrong thread

Oh to be some folk on Mumsnet who wouldn't get out of bed to sell a toy for less than a crisp £50 apparently!!. In my house a quid is a quid. I'm an unpaid carer so every single penny is accounted for, so selling 10/15 toys for a quid would really help me out so I totally get why you would sell so cheap, how lovely for those who don't know what struggling is like eh. x

Chimley · 30/10/2021 20:18

I put stuff on FBMP for £1 because it weeds out the timewasters. And 15 items x £1 for less than a minute of my time is worth it to me. I have a sheltered hidden space I put stuff in and people collect when it's convenient for them. No one has ever taken and not paid. I don't have to wait in all day for timewasters or online deliveries! Super system but it's literally one strike and you're blocked. I do not have time for rudeness or requests for delivery (my posts ALWAYS say cash on collection only although I am happy with PayPal if people don't have cash)

Ilovelblue · 30/10/2021 20:23

My friend advertised a bed free on FBMP only yesterday and even threw in some bedding if the person wanted it (he did). On his way out, he noticed some more bedding in a basket waiting to be washed and asked if he could have that too! She sent him on his way....

DobbleBobble · 30/10/2021 20:24

I save stuff up for a local car boot sale where you can sell stuff for 50p / £1. It's difficult to get value for things selling there so bundles of something like paw patrol toys that I think are worth more I will try and sell on Facebook first. If you have 15 toys that you want £1 each for I would put on Facebook as a job lot (assuming they are in someway linked eg for a certain age range) and ask 30 expecting people to offer lower or just pick a few.

CHML1976 · 30/10/2021 20:25

I just reply with I can post for £3.20.
I get this quite often. And I agree. Not only is my time incredibly limited and precious, there’s also a reason why I’m selling something so cheaply instead of giving it away…. I need the money!

Beautybunny · 30/10/2021 20:29

@Carriecakes80

I don't think a lot of people do know what no money means. I once had £14 for a whole weeks shopping. I had not been able to work due to covid and had huge rent which I was being chased for. The landlord was a total shit. He threatened us if we left without due notice he would sue us and not provide a reference. Both he tried. Luckily I can cook and had a few frozen items. Thinks improved for us this year but at the time I sold things on fleebay. It saved our bacon when someone bought some antique lamps. I hope this get better for you.

SallyWD · 30/10/2021 21:21

I was offering a very nice dining table and chairs for free. Made it very clear that it was collection only. Nearly everyone who was interested wanted me to deliver it to them for free. No way! The stress, effort and time involved was too much. So cheeky.

keffie12 · 30/10/2021 21:27

I had a cull recently. Cleared on eBay. I won't use FB as I've heard too much about the CF'S and rather dense on there.

eBay can be as bad though. I've had a few in my times. I post nothing on eBay unless its signed for. Got ripped on that once. Never again.

Most recent sales: Selling a new stairgate. Not used. Only been taken out of the box. Not used cos bought at the beginning of pandemic and now not needed.

Selling for a £5. Woman messaged who didn't know the area we lived in so she wanted me to meet her half way. She lived in the next town about three quarters of an hour away.

Erm nope use your Sat-Nav. I haven't got one she replied. I replied saying "You must have a smartphone. That has Google maps on. It's not difficult to find and it would cost me to deliver it"

Last I heard from her.

Next one when sold

Buyer "Can you take the sign for post off the price? I don't want it sent that way"

Me: No I can't. I post only recorded delivery. I've been caught by this before. Its a blanket tile and not personal"

Buyer: well I won't buy it then

Me: Then I will cancel the sale and offer it to the next person"

Buyer: "You can't do that I bought it"

Me: "Yes I can so you can either pay for it or I'll offer it to the next person"

Buyer didn't respond so I cancelled and offered it to the next buyer. I didn't trust the first buyer to not damage it on receipt or something to be malicious

Dense or CF'S or both? Who knows

Courtier · 30/10/2021 21:34

Yeah I always say collection only but usually just give stuff away

Chimley · 30/10/2021 21:54

When FBMP did seller ratings I was downrated on my punctuality for my selling profile. I leave everything in my sheltered hidden spot and buyers can collect at their convenience. You surely can't downrate me because you're late?! I literally cannot be anything other than on time 😂

Courtier · 30/10/2021 21:55

@smoko

Hear you OP, this kind of cheeky fuckery gets my goat!

Recently I sold a vintage stained glass front door on FB for $100 - worth a fair bit more, but had found it by the roadside & enjoy putting up a good deal which is a quick sell in an hour or two Grin

Had a message from someone offering $50

Messaged back & said no, price firm

Then they message back to offer the asking price!

So text them back & said no, on principle I won’t sell it to you now, because you’ve taken the piss with such a lowball offer.

They apologised & offered $150!

I still said no - based on your rudeness to offer such a low asking price when you can obviously afford me pay more, am even less inclined to sell to someone like you.

Think people like this need to be called out on their cheapskate attitude.

This is weird to me. People are allowed to barter and to then refuse for way more money 'on principle'? 😂
Drivingslowtosavefuel · 30/10/2021 21:56

@keffie12 all of these places to sell sound like a massive hassle - are there any really good platforms people use to buy and sell hassle free?

MarshmallowX1983 · 30/10/2021 22:00

You need to check out this Facebook page, Fuckwits on Facebook Buy & Sell, it’s hilarious, will make you feel better! www.facebook.com/groups/239085293436916/?ref=share

Chimley · 30/10/2021 22:03

@AudacityBaby

A couple of happy ending stories with FBMP.

Was gifted a hideous papier-mache cockerel ornament type thing. I put it on FBMP as a bit of fun thinking everyone would get a laugh looking at it. A very nice lady immediately messaged asking if she could please take it for her elderly mum, who grew up on a farm with chickens and now lives in a little bungalow with a small garden. I said yes absolutely and she took the cockerel away. A couple of hours later I got a picture of elderly mum sitting in her outdoor chair gazing lovingly at cockerel. Still warms my heart.

The other one was when I offered a bunch of Xmas baubles and a fake tree as I'd bought a new one. Offered for free and a lovely lady contacted me asking if she could take it. She came on time and said she was so grateful as she'd fled domestic violence with her young kids and her parents were helping her buy presents, but the kids would be in a strange new flat and she had no decorations. She sent me a pic of the tree decorated as well about a month later.

I've had a whole bunch of rude, aggressive, timewasting CFs as well, don't get me wrong, but those two stories are what keeps me going back to FBMP. There're some lovely people in the world.

I've had some lovely stories too. I was giving away something that had been gifted to me and a lady gave me a big bar of chocolate! Quite a few times I've had photos of the child playing or wearing the thing I've sold/given away and a massive thank you from the buyer.

My niche one is I had been lent (although I hadn't asked) a particular toy that her child had loved and now mine did. It got water on it and as an electronic toy it went crazy! Unfortunately it was an old toy no longer made.

I posted on a local mum's group and asked if anyone saw one for sale to please let me know. A few months later a distant friend messaged to say she'd seen one. I contacted the seller with my genuine story and she promised to hold it. I collected it and once my child had grown out of it returned it to the original lender none the wiser. It taught me a lesson in not borrowing old things but also that other mums can be lovely and super helpful.

JonSnowIsALoser · 30/10/2021 22:06

^It's worse when you offer something for free..
You get a 'drop 2 me 2mro at 2, wat els u got. Needz be perfect^

This is so spot on. I've been using Freecycle and FBMP for some time now to get rid of stuff for free that is too large to sell and post - collection only, clearly stated. I got asked so many times if I can deliver a piece of (free) furniture dozens of miles away from where I live. "I don't have a van, but I can arrange to hire one for you for £200" is the only sensible response in this situation.

Also, the number of people who arrange a pick up but don't turn up without cancelling first!

I have since realised that the most accurate indicator of the buyer's reliability is their spelling. If an enquiry is well spelled, they will turn up. If not, they usually won't. Funny that.

Pinkfairylights · 30/10/2021 22:10

I've just remembered another lovely story.

I advertised something recently and someone was interested - an old friend who I hadn't seen for over 20 years!

Rainbowsew · 30/10/2021 22:10

People are cheeky fuckers, ive tried to sell pristine toys, much cheaper than they're worth and cheeky fuckers still try offering less. I feel like texting no way it's a.fuckinf good deal as it is... But no I'd rather give them to the charity shop than let those CFs have them cheaper to sell on as I suspect in a lot ofcases

Nixster87 · 30/10/2021 22:19

I do but stuff from MP but I don’t have a vehicle. If I can’t physically go and get ( I care for 2 disabled family members ) I ask the seller if they drive and if they wouldn’t mind delivering it if I cover their costs due to my circumstances. Most of the time they are happy to do so and I am happy to cover the fuel cost. I live in a city and only ever consider things within 5km of distance from my home. I’ve sold stuff before and had some right cheeky people try and cut my pricing in half, asked me to get a taxi to drop
off when I said I couldn’t drive and then there’s the ones that message saying yes they want to buy, don’t turn up, you message them and get no reply then you sell to another buyer. Three weeks later you get “ill pick xxxxx item up tomorrow, see
You at 10am” and when you tell them you’ve sold it they have the cheek to have a go at
You 🙄

Chimley · 30/10/2021 22:22

People on here who don't think it's worth their time, what do they do with the stuff? Our charity shops permanently have 'not accepting donations for the time being' signs and this stuff takes up room. I try and give to charity but if they are accepting they pick through the bag and take about 10% of stuff and I have to cart the rest back to the car!

GinPin2 · 30/10/2021 22:28

After 2 bouts of selling stuff on MP / Selling Sites 2017 and 2019 I made £500, everything was for £1 each.
Of no use to me anyway and I just asked people to put the money through the letter box. I just left the items clearly labelled in the porch. Will do a bit more next year too.
Decluttered sooo much! Smile

Tigerlilynuj · 30/10/2021 22:41

What a tight arse! Don't even respond. I regularly sell on eBay and get the usual CF questions. I just ignore them. Make it clear on your posts that you don't deliver and will offer delivery at the buyers cost, end of!
