I advertised a toy on FB. In pristine condition for £1 (would normally sell new for £8).

Someone living in a very wealthy area has asked me to deliver the toy to them when they know it's a 15 mile round trip. They don't want to know now that I've suggested a few pounds delivery charge for petrol and my time. It would still make the toy half of what it would cost in the shops.

AIBU to be flabbergasted at how some people expect the world to owe them something when they're already getting an amazing deal?

They seem really miffed at my suggestion of a delivery charge. Why on earth would I deliver something for £1 when it would cost me more than that in petrol let alone my time? CF!!! I can't believe the gall of some people.

I deactivated my Facebook months ago. I've got a lot of school trousers that don't fit ds anymore so was going to reactivate to give away free on fbmp. After reading this I think I won't bother and just take them to charity shop instead.

restingbitchface30 · 30/10/2021 17:23

These people are everywhere. I work as a store manager. Regularly get phone calls saying ‘the item doesn’t fit, could you please bring x size to me house and do an exchange’. Eerrrm nope.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 30/10/2021 17:35

@70isaLimitNotaTarget

Sxhadenfreud if you'd waited another couple of weeks till he was a bitey little landshark furniture wrecker they might've paid you to take him away ...Grin
Grin You're right! I missed a trick there.

(I think if we'd had another £300 going begging they would have let his brother go even cheaper to get rid of them. They were totally manic, and he still is)

DevonTF · 30/10/2021 17:38

I advertised 2 car seats for free on FB. Really good condition etc.

Woman instantly responded on the ad, asking if I could deliver - about 25mile round trip. Before I had a chance to respond, someone else posted out their CF ways.

She responded - 'If she won't deliver, it will be her fault if my kids die in a car accident'.

I took the advert down, and took them to the local dump.

sandybeach93 · 30/10/2021 17:39

Already getting a bargain so they are cheeky to ask

SchadenfreudePersonified · 30/10/2021 17:48

Or picked him and his brother up from the pound for free!

I've often wondered what they did with him. The woman did say they weren't keeping him.

They had one dog and 5 bitches - all health-checked, but I did get confirmation that he was a carrier for some condition or other (can't remember what and can't be bothered to look for the papers) and if we bred from him there was a x% likelihood his pups would carry/suffer.

We don't breed, so no problem.

My FBMP buyer helped me sell my house!
Was offering some furniture for £100, lady messaged me and said she’d be there in an hour, in her van with cash!
Sure enough she appeared and we were chatting while I helped load the furniture on board. I ended up talking about the viewers I’d had for my house all of whom were saying it was too small, too cramped, too dark etc.
She suddenly whizzed round saying why don’t you move this here, put this here, some flowers here…etc etc. And offered to help me move everything! Once we were done I’d never seen the house looking so fab. I thanked her profusely..:she revealed she was a photographer for an interiors magazine!!!
I took some new photos and emailed them to the estate agent, they went up on Monday. The house viewer the next day bought my house for the asking price! I messaged her thanking her soooo much, what a stroke of luck meeting her! FBMP isn’t ALL bad…but yes I have had my fair share of idiots.

JudgeJ · 30/10/2021 17:51

@MichelleScarn

It's worse when you offer something for free.. You get a 'drop 2 me 2mro at 2, wat els u got. Needz be perfect'
Reply 'I've got a few English grammar books available'.
Bertiebiscuit · 30/10/2021 17:58

That's the rich for you, no one ever got rich by being nice or generous I'm afraid

nexus63 · 30/10/2021 17:58

i bought an air walker brand new for £90, i advertised it and said i just want the money i paid for it, i said it was built and they would need a van, he turns up with a small car and £50, i refused the payment and told him it will not go in his car, he starts ranting and raving at me for not being clear on the advert and that he wanted the petrol money for his 60 mile round trip, the couple next door came out and told him to leave, they then bought it and a few days later the lady gave me some cakes and chocolate as a thank you....she now gets peace to watch her soaps as he is upstairs exercising..lol

Ooooh!

That was excellent . . .

Littlemisspissypants · 30/10/2021 18:00

There's someone on Freecycle who copies and pastes the same request for everything I offer. I've said yes to them twice, then they back and forth about times the can collect taking a week 'because I don't know my rota'. Then they have to arrange transport from two cities up the M1. Now I say no everytime. I've even started copying and pasting my reasons no everytime since they don't care enough to write a proper message or collect in a timely fashion.

Spain1980 · 30/10/2021 18:01

My advice exactly

LovelyBranches · 30/10/2021 18:02

People are cheeky. I got rid of box fulls of DVD’s a few years ago. It was a huge amount and the person who collected was supposed to give me £10. They shoved £8 in loose change and sped off before I even had chance to count it.

I also sold a buggy a few weeks ago. It was a limited edition print but I made clear, with lots of photos that it came with a complementary but not matching footmuff. A mum arrived and acted shocked that it wasn’t the same print as the pram. I was a bit taken aback so when she bartered £20 off the price I allowed her.

I went to delete the advert a few days later and low and behold the footmuff was on Facebook marketplace for more £££ than the entire cost of the buggy and footmuff. Cheeky fucker!

waitingpatientlyforspring · 30/10/2021 18:11

I'm trying to sell some curtains. Had interest off a lady. We were arranging collection. She wanted me to meet her in town. I explained I can't as at work but my husband is in as he wfh. We live 5/7 min walk from where she wanted me to meet her with the curtains. She never replied to me.

MisterMole · 30/10/2021 18:13

@Asparaguspatchkid

People on FBMP are ridiculous. Just say "No sorry, collection only" and if no one wants it, give to charity.
THIS...
Mitzi067 · 30/10/2021 18:29

These people want brand new goods for free! I've given up on selling now, ebay vinted, gumtree. Instead, I give to Charity Shops.

Ashton22 · 30/10/2021 18:41

@IsDaveThere

In fact, selling for £1 wouldn't even be worth my time and effort posting it in the first place.
Dave doesn’t get out of bed for less than £20 haha. She already explained why she was selling them for £1, have a bit more empathy.
Midnightshopping · 30/10/2021 18:44

If you have clothes that would otherwise go into landfill take them to H&M they not just give you a £5 off £30 voucher they have a scheme for those clothes to go into circulation again and what’s not good enough goes into some recycling energy scheme.

But yeah you get them on FB and on Shpock I sell locally on there I don’t want to post I list as collection only yet people still expect postage on some things and the time wasters making offers but then ghosting you.

Morgysmum · 30/10/2021 18:52

Thanks for the warning, I was going to give Facebook a try, but after hearing this I will give it a miss.
I tried Vinted, but after not getting anywhere, I sold one dress, I posted it to the lady, but because I didn't use the postage company Vinted wanted, the said, I hadn't sent it so wouldn't pay me! I didn't know you had to use there system, I just thought like E-Bay to pick your own, so I was down a dress and no money, luckily, the buyer was happy to pay me direct, not with Vinted.
Then when I complained on my Facebook, people were why did you want to sell it and not just give to charity! I do donate a lot of stuff, it was a nice dress, that had cost a bit to buy, I was in need of a bit of a cash boost, I guess it must be nice, not to have to struggle with cash from time to time, but sometimes a bit of a cash boost helps. I hope you find a nice person to buy it and not want it delivered. Give Gumtree a try, I sold some stuff before Christmas, the other year, no one wanted it deliverd. But that was 5 years ago.

AvocadoOrange · 30/10/2021 18:59

If you want to sell/give away stuff on Facebook it seems to work better if you join groups for doing so - that seems to filter out a lot of people who are just on the marketplace.

AnnieSnap · 30/10/2021 19:18

Wow! I thought I might offer some stuff on Freecycle, as I (clearly mistakenly) believed it to be a lovely community of people. After reading posts on this thread, I’ll avoid it! 😏

LokiDoki75 · 30/10/2021 19:28

@Not2daySatan You could ask your DS’s school if they’d like them if you’re giving them away. Often the SENCO will know if there are any families that need a bit of help with uniforms. I used to do it a lot at my DS’s primary school.

amispeakingenglish · 30/10/2021 19:30

Sold a large item on Ebay, said LOCAL delivery. Buyer was 5 miles away (London miles so over an hour & during 1st lockdown) I said I'd deliver for the same amount of money an hour that he got paid. He sent a reply (still expecting delivery) saying no,' what makes you think it's worth what I get an hour!!' I never replied, resold item, delivered further away, but no traffic and buyer paid me £30 to deliver. Heard nothing from him until about 6 months later when he asked for the item. I didn't reply.

Darlingx · 30/10/2021 19:34

80Dodgeballs

I was selling at a car boot sale and suggested price I said 50 pence she got a load of One pennies out one with crud stuck to it and tried to give me 15 p and I said forget it I said 50 p although I knew she heard me correctly she pushed the grubby pennies in my hand and went off with the sewing items. Some people are beyond entitled !
