Colleague started coughing and sniffling halfway through the day but just sat there

This isn't a guy who has allergies or anything, it just came on all of a sudden.
I legged it after an hour or two of his random coughs and sniffles. AIBU here or should he have buggered off to WFH after the 3rd or 4th cough? Fun, the wait begins!

This is so unreasonable, if my work was like this we would be shut 24/7 and no one's children would be at school confused . People get colds. Covid unfortunately isn't just going to dissappear it's going to be a seasonal virus. Such an overreaction

At this stage where it is still a virus that is novel to us we need to be careful. Not because of individual risk, which has been mitigated by the vaccine, but because - we can’t have huge swathes of the population off at the same time. I’m on week 3 of sick leave. I work for the NHS. There is no one can see my patients for me so they will have to wait. For every person that is ill there are various consequences. Not to mention the excess pressure on the NHS and impact on what can be delivered. Yes we will have to learn to live with this but this winter we still need to take some care. Self isolating and getting a PCR test when you start coughing is a small ask.

Additionally we should all want to limit the spread in whatever way we can to avoid further measures being put into place.

The OPs colleague was being selfish (and has now apologised I believe - fair play to him)

@ufucoffee

OP you know exactly why I called you batshit loopy. I didn't call you stupid. Although ....
Did I say you did?

Of course I know why. Because you don't understand how bad it is to spread covid, regardless of risk of death.

Who TF wears a mask in an office?!

Plunger · 29/10/2021 20:23

@JesusIsAnyNameFree

Seeing as the rule is you're not welcome in the office with any coughs, runny noses, weird headaches, fevers or sore throats where I work, I clearly know I'm not being unreasonable in the slightest.

But it's eye-opening to see how people still don't get it. Well, on mumsnet anyway (and this one asshole).

I'm surprised that there is anyone in the office!
Pumperthepumper · 29/10/2021 20:29

Are none of you in Scotland? Mask wearing indoors is very common in offices here.

JesusIsAnyNameFree · 29/10/2021 20:30

@roarfeckingroarr

Who TF wears a mask in an office?!
Everyone wore one up until July this year, regardless of if you were sitting or walking around. We now have to wear masks again if we leave the desk.

Why would people not wear masks in an office? Does covid not like offices?

OP posts:
ufucoffee · 29/10/2021 20:34

Worked in office throughout lockdown. No one ever wore a mask.

They should have, that’s appalling.
ufucoffee · 29/10/2021 20:47

No it's not. The decision was left up to staff if they wanted to and no one did. We were all distanced, sanitised, one person in kitchen at a time etc. no need for masks.

Of course there was a need for masks during a pandemic. Did you wear them in shops?
SlugRose · 29/10/2021 20:50

It's compulsory if you're in the common areas of my office.

My colleagues do 🤷🏻‍♀️
Mistressiggi · 29/10/2021 20:54

I wear one all day, every day in a school, unless I am actually alone in the classroom or staff office. Would be in trouble if we did not.

Loubelou14 · 29/10/2021 20:58

I get you OP and I think we all need to be more considerate. I know there's more than Covid but who wants whatever he had.. No thanks. I'm with you and if he can wfh he should have been more thoughtful and done that.

Silenceisgolden20 · 29/10/2021 20:58

Op why don't you work form home them if it's so easy to. Then you wouldn't have to be near anyone ever.

I don’t think you can work from home because someone else has covid symptoms.

Because if everyone did that we'd all be working from home again. It makes more sense for the person who is ill to remove themselves from the environment
Silenceisgolden20 · 29/10/2021 21:12

@SlugRose yes I'm making a reference to the OP saying the other person should go home.

JesusIsAnyNameFree · 29/10/2021 21:23

Because HE HAD COVID SYMPTOMS.

Well, I don't imagine I would find you very pleasant either.
OP posts:

@Pumperthepumper wore them in shops because forced to.

niugboo · 29/10/2021 21:32

What was the point of this post? You clearly think you’re completely right so why ask if you’re unreasonable if you’re just going to berate anyone who doesn’t bow to your nonsense.

Bloodybridget · 29/10/2021 21:35

DP and I both have really horrible colds atm, feeling completely crap, haven't been out for days. I wouldn't want to pass it on to anyone, so actually I don't think it's unreasonable to not want someone coughing and sneezing in a workplace.

Pumperthepumper · 29/10/2021 21:36

How were you forced to?
