To not want to eat in Wetherspoons?

Popped out with BIL and OH today, I absolutely despise Wetherspoons but they love a bargain and aren't too fussy.

I'm not a snob in anyway shape or form I just can't stand it. I eventually went with them and sat in there and waited until they finished.

I just hate the old dirty pubs and how fast the rancid food comes out 🤢 the alcoholics that have been sat there since the moment they opened the doors on the morning.

I'd much rather go to one of our local independent cafes and have a nice lunch and I know it's not coming out of the microwave. I know it's not the same price bracket but you know what I mean.

They always laugh and joke and call me a snob and say I think I'm better than everyone else. But I'm really not and I don't think that.

Wetherspoons does not claim to be a high end eatery. The food is ok though, some of the buildings are gorgeous (Wetherspoons at Liverpool St is a great example). I have eaten at some really fine restaurants, but would have no issues accompanying a relative who wanted to eat there. the idea that your mum and dad would die a bit inside if they saw you there does seem to suggest you have issues though.

Bluesheep8 · 28/10/2021 10:09

I’m afraid you really do sound like you have a big chip on your shoulder about it

What type of chip though? A handcut triple cooked chip with sea salt and truffle oil or a frozen crinnkle cut? Grin

giveitarestplease · 28/10/2021 10:12

My parents wouldn't look down on me for eating there that's not what it is. They just see food like that (microwaved quick food)as rubbish kind of thing.

Didn't think I would ruffle so many feathers over me not wanting to eat in Wetherspoons! And also I didn't sit there staring at OH and BIL eating there food. I had DD with me and we both had hot drinks that we bought before we even went into there what we was drinking. I definitely don't sit there judging them for eating at Wetherspoons. If that's what they like I will go with them and wait for them to finish I still had a nice time chatting and catching up with them.

Some Wetherspoons are better than others but you are coming across as a total snob. I'm currently away from home and while out shopping yesterday with dd we had a quick Wetherspoons lunch. The pub was clean and tidy and the food was well presented, hot and tasty. It's not fancy food but fine for a quick lunch..........I have paid double in other places for exactly the same quality food.
I eat out quite a bit as I mystery shop pubs and restaurant chains, yesterdays visit was "work". There is such a thing as a free lunch Smile

2Two · 28/10/2021 10:12

DN works in a Wetherspoons kitchen and has worked in other restaurants. He says their kitchen hygiene standards are very high, and higher than in most other restaurants he has worked in: they have regular draconian kitchen audits with good incentives for passing well. So YABVU in making assumptions that the food there is "rancid".

A pint can easily cost £6 in a London pub, so the food deals that include a drink are very attractive.

I like the way they specify the butter type; Lurpak Spreadable / Country Life with different orders!

BigFatLiar · 28/10/2021 10:14

Some people do do this – they’ll be there for when the doors open at 9 then sit there all day. She’s not saying this is all alcoholics just that the people who do do this are, and she doesn’t like being round it.

Not just Weatherspoons. It was a cause for concern with some places like coffee shops where they had free wifi that people would sit and 'wfh' there occupying a table having a cup of coffee every couple of hours.

Whatiswrongwithmyknee · 28/10/2021 10:14

OP you ruffled no feathers about not wanting to eat at Wetherspoons. You ruffled feathers because you appeared to look down on it and want vindication that your opinion about the best place to eat was superior to your BIL and OH. The reason you like/ don't like it is not relevant. You just disagreed about where was best to eat. What were you hoping for from this thread?

2Two · 28/10/2021 10:15

@Lalliella

Totally agree. They’re generally shit-holes, the food is microwaved crap and Tim Martin is a gammony cunt.
It isn't all microwaved crap. DN cooks a superb steak and learnt how to do so working at Wetherspoons.
Hoppinggreen · 28/10/2021 10:24

Whatever your opinion on Weatherspoons (ours is awful) I am a bit shocked by how many people who are happy to go there because the food “isn’t too bad” or similar
I get that price might be a factor but how is it acceptable for food not to be “too bad” or “ok”? It can’t be too hard to find food that actually nice that’s not too expensive- or is it?

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 28/10/2021 10:28

TBH I look on Wetherspoons as similar to Premier Inn - obviously not top end, but clean and reliable, and you know what you’re going to get.

We’ve eaten in a few, especially perhaps in unfamiliar areas when we’ve wanted a drink with a meal - no complaints at all.

Dismissing the mere idea does sound like crashing snob territory, though evidently it’s acceptable here if you cite the owner’s politics as your reason.

ThePlantsitter · 28/10/2021 10:36

Just to clarify the politics thing. I don't spend money in wetherspoons because doing so is like directly paying Tim Whatsisarse back for his funding of the Brexit campaign. That's the beauty of the stupid free market. I used to frequent wetherspoons quite regularly before all that stuff too. I don't mind people disagreeing with me politically but I don't want to inadvertently end up funding the ruination of the country.

knittingaddict · 28/10/2021 10:40

@LalalalalalaLand123

Sorry but you sound like a snob who thinks you're better than everyone else.
No, she sounds like someone with standards.

I had breakfast in a Wetherspoons a few years ago with my adult daughter. The food was edible, but was full of people drinking alcohol at 9 in the morning and the atmosphere was horrible. Never been back since and would actively avoid that chain of pubs too.

BoredZelda · 28/10/2021 10:41

I don’t like eating in Wetherspoons because the food isn’t decent quality, although breakfast is OK. I also hate eating off the awful patterned plates they have, it puts me off the food. But if others enjoy it, that’s fine too. If I was with a group and they chose it, I’d go along and have something. Sitting with them sulkily not eating is poor manners.

RampantIvy · 28/10/2021 10:42

@LittleBearPad

Why?

They are pretty fair points.

Many Wetherspoons are pretty grotty. They aren’t necessarily clean and they do attract alcoholics. Why is it snobby to say this?

Because they aren't all dirty, smelly and full of alcoholics.

I have only eaten in 3 Wetherspoons in my life, and it isn't somewhere I would choose to go to for a meal but I think you are being unfair to tar them all with the same brush.

BoredZelda · 28/10/2021 10:43

No, she sounds like someone with standards.

No, she sounds like someone with different standards. It isn’t up to her (or you or anyone else) to decide what “standards” are the right one for everyone.

knittingaddict · 28/10/2021 10:45

I would probably have eaten something though if it was a mealtime. Why not eat if you are in there anyway?

BoredZelda · 28/10/2021 10:47

I had DD with me and we both had hot drinks that we bought before we even went into there what we was drinking.

You took drinks purchased elsewhere, in to a restaurant?

I didn't comment on the food in my first post, but I do agree that the food is ok given what you pay for it. I've had some bad food/tiny positions of mediocre food in some places that cost much more and the drinks were expensive too. The food isn't on par with a good pub lunch, but is is reasonable for what you pay.

I do remember a Christmas Eve I spent in Wetherspoons some years back before kids. My family all decided we just wanted to spend Christmas on our own as some of them had other commitments/worked really hard before Christmas or in my case was working boxing day. We all met for a couple of drinks and ended up in there all day. My Christmas got completely derailed by their drinks offers. I cooked a roast the next day but pretty much cried into it because I was so hungover. Thank God for kids for keeping you on the straight and narrow.

BoredZelda · 28/10/2021 10:51

Depends where you are. The closest ‘spoons to me is in a major shopping centre. The other places to eat are Harvester, Chiquitos, Ask, McDs, Pizza Hut. There is no decent quality restaurants in the place, let alone any reasonably priced ones. The others we’ve been to were in our nearest city and they are the only ones around that area which are properly accessible.

vampirethriller · 28/10/2021 10:51

The one on Fleet Street is nice. No all day drunks, no rancid anything. Politics aside I don't mind Wetherspoons. Quick cheap and easy.

PurpleDaisies · 28/10/2021 10:54

If it was lunch time, what did you do for food? Did you really sit in a pub drinking take away drinks from another place? Confused

Etonmessisyum · 28/10/2021 10:55

I’ll happily go into spoons for a drink but no I don’t eat there as the food isn’t great and there are so many nicer places I could go locally. Yes it’s cheap but I’d rather just make something at home first. I don’t think op is a snob but I just say I’ll eat elsewhere if it’s suggested we eat there but happily go for drinks.

bg21 · 28/10/2021 10:57

yeah your a snob lol

Theluggage15 · 28/10/2021 10:58

Some Weatherspoons are nice, some not so nice, exactly the same with independent cafes. Your attitude is what’s snobbish and I can’t believe you took drinks bought elsewhere, how rude.
