To feel vindicated that John Lewis has pulled its awful ad with the boy in the dress trashing the house?

I wrote to the ASA and complained. I said the ad was misleading (as into insurance will cover wilful damage), sexist (with a boy rampaging through the house and destroying his mother and sister's things, and sexualised.

I also called John Lewis and told them I hated it and why.

They've withdrawn it.

GOOD

Inappropriate sexualised behaviour is a red flag for a child being abused - or at least it used to be.

I just watched it again. The pouting is very obvious and the strutting. That 'on the wall' move is a cross between being 'flash danceish' and a faint 'weak at the knees' move. The combination of all three is rather clear.

Interrobanger · 28/10/2021 21:30

Intellectualise it all you want, but the whole ad was noncey as fuck.

And knowing that the director is a sexual deviant just makes it even more so.

I said what I said.

You know that director?

What other ads have they done, do you know? It would be interesting to see their other work to see what thinking was behind this one.

Formerly of MTV and the Tokyo Breakfast man? Fond of the N word? The dog with the human penis? The penny has dropped with me now. FFS. Wiki is our friend on this. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Kuntz

Have I got the same man? Or is there a doppelganger?

Well thank you for that.

I must admit reading the ‘holiday virals’ was err.. interesting. Thank you both. I feel I understand now how this ad has got through the approval process.

Indeed it has.

Yes. Same one.
TheBlackDarner · 28/10/2021 23:09

Double FFS.

Oh I've just watched the holiday virals.

I wish I hadn't

I'd like to know the reasons for "departing quickly" from MTV ( amongst other things).

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 29/10/2021 04:10

Well, well, well.

John Lewis commissioned this?????

I think we’ve all lost a bit of respect for them.

MimiDaisy11 · 29/10/2021 04:26

I’ve been catching up with tv show on channel 4’s watch on demand app and they only have about 4 adverts which play again and again. This was one of them which I’ve viewed multiple times unfortunately. It was bad for multiple reasons. Good Stevie Nicks song though.

Dojacatpaws · 29/10/2021 07:47

Whst are holiday virals

HeronLanyon · 29/10/2021 08:05

In case of interest ASA council currently recruiting two new members (with especial interest in Northern Ireland representation) - one indépendant one from the industry.

Helleofabore · 29/10/2021 08:09

Dojacatpaws

I don’t recommend you search those ones out to view for yourself. The description is enough.

From wiki

The first, Santasm.net features two strange-looking semi-nude men in a dark room with some Christmas lights strung up around them. What at first appears to be a still image, slowly begins to move as we see the slighter of the two men begin to suckle the teat of the larger man. The large man laughs manically and then the film is over.

The other two ‘virals’ depict either an animal with a large human penis or two men with long snake like penises that can be useful, apparently, for holding cups to drink from.

MarshaBradyo · 29/10/2021 08:12

Well done John Lewis for choosing a director like that Confused

Yeah I'll never give them another penny if that's how they spend it!

Shouldn't the ad be pulled from the 'on demand' channels too? The FCA ruling should cover all airing, surely?

AlfonsoTheUnrepetant · 29/10/2021 08:30

@Brainwave89

I work in insurance, and accept that the add was misleading on what might be covered by accidental damage. However, IMV the rest of the advert is fine. In 2021, can we not encourage small boys to dress up and be creative? There was nothing sexualised about it, unless you have a very small mind.
There was nothing sexualised about it, unless you have a very small mind.

That's what Desmond's mother said about Desmond dancing in a gay bar for men to put dollar bills in his underwear / g-string / whatever it was called. If a little girl had done that, this would be grounds for concern; but because a boy does it it's fine - nothing to see here, move along.

AICM · 29/10/2021 08:38

Surely the more talked about an ad is the more successful it is?

A lot of people wouldn't have known about John Lewis insurance before this ad and still wouldn't have after the ad if it hadn't been for the fuss.

Joh Lewis wanted more people to know the sell insurance - job done, great ad.

AlfonsoTheUnrepetant · 29/10/2021 08:46

Consumers will say "I didn't know that JL sold home insurance and now I do thanks to that advert that was withdrawn for being misleading. I wonder what else they're not honest about? I think I'll give JL a miss."

It depends on the point of the advert. If it had been to raise awareness of an issue, it would have been successful. In this case, it was to sell insurance. It failed dreadfully because now JL have a reputation for being dishonest about what they will and will not cover.
