To feel vindicated that John Lewis has pulled its awful ad with the boy in the dress trashing the house?

I wrote to the ASA and complained. I said the ad was misleading (as into insurance will cover wilful damage), sexist (with a boy rampaging through the house and destroying his mother and sister's things, and sexualised.

I also called John Lewis and told them I hated it and why.

They've withdrawn it.

GOOD

I hated the ad too - for several reasons.

I wonder what the REAL reason was for them pulling the ad? Wink

LublinToDublin · 27/10/2021 19:07

You only have to compare this ad to the one featuring a girl. She was very clearly oblivious - in a glorious world of her own and exuberant. No bystanders.
That was not the case on this ad. I hated it. Absolutely nothing to do with his attire but everything to do with his attitude and the passive roles of the females. And of course it was misleading in expectations of what their insurance would cover.

I really feel for the young actor who was directed in such a way, and now his ad has been withdrawn in the middle of such controversy

whitehorsesdonotlie · 27/10/2021 19:07

Good decision! Shame JL are defending it though, and apparently can't see that the 'accidental, unintentional' damage was anything but, and anything but joyful.

Lordamighty · 27/10/2021 19:07

The ad was misleading & they were negligent in using it. They should have known better.

SeasonalNamechange · 27/10/2021 19:07

its withdrawn....gone....so whats the issue?

Lordamighty · 27/10/2021 19:08

There was absolutely nothing joyful about it, it was hideous.

LizzieMacQueen · 27/10/2021 19:09

I wonder what they've lined up for their Christmas ad (which will, of course, have been filmed 9 months ago!).

@Getyourarseofffthequattro

Have you nothing better to do?
Than potentially save people a lot of time, effort, stress and money after taking out a misleading policy?

There are worse ways OP could be spending her time; like being an arse on an anonymous forum...

Getyourarseofffthequattro · 27/10/2021 19:12

I agree they shouldn't put out misleading adverts, although I mean surely you read the small print anyway. I thought it was a nice advert in a world full of miserable shit.

But clearly I am in the minority and apparently means it's okay to personally attack me.

YearsSinceISawYou · 27/10/2021 19:12

@Williamshatnershorses

I thought from the get-go it would cause them problems with either the ASA or the FCA due to the fact that the damage shown in the ad would not be covered by the product being advertised, yet many would imply from it that cover would be in place. So I’m not at all surprised it’s been pulled, I’m just surprised it’s taken this long.

But, the cynic in me is thinking what a lot of free name recognition JL are getting due to the wider aspects of the ad. It’s been the advertising version of clickbait.

I agree with your cynical/realistic point.

I am also wondering at the sheer coincidence of the BBC using the Stevie Nicks song used in the advert in their Strictly Come Dancing Programme the week before last.

The FCA are a pretty big enough reason.
emptyvesselsmakethemostnoise · 27/10/2021 19:14

I'm glad, I have John Lewis insurance and there's no way they'd pay out for wilful damage. Totally misleading

Please report personal attacks to MNHQ and they will of course be deleted as per the Talk Guidelines of this website.

It's in the small print.

I think you started that in fairness 😅

I have already done so @SkeletonArgument.

Have you nothing better to do?

Misleading advertising for financial products is pretty serious, actually.

iklboogiemaninthecloset · 27/10/2021 19:16

It was in no way a 'nice' advert.

Sorry are we not allowed our own opinions anymore?
SkeletonArgument · 27/10/2021 19:19

Everyone's allowed an opinion on MN. It's a website based in London and subject to its own Talk Guidelines which encourage freedom of expression but which also draw the line at actual personal attacks and, perhaps relevantly, goadiness.

TheOccupier · 27/10/2021 19:20

YANBU! I also complained to the ASA. Glad they've pulled it.

Moonface123 · 27/10/2021 19:20

Well l don't ever watch tv, so haven't seen this advert, but by sound of it, l feel quite relieved.
Not having a tv does wonders for your mental health.

Yeah, that does seem relevent to your posts. Biscuit
TheFlis12345 · 27/10/2021 19:21

I work in the industry and I amazed this advert was cleared for air as you are not generally allowed to depict dangerous or destructive behaviour that a child watching may copy.
