My husband is off to NY for work for 4 weeks, and I thought that the least he could do was to bring back some things for me and the children (young) but I don’t know what! Please tell me what you’d like to get!
(The children have enough clothes, I really don’t think I should tell him to get those…though I really like Carter’s)

Thank you!

Mint tree bark from Williams & Somoma. Delicious.

Sugar Cookie M&Ms if they are out already!

Pachonga · 25/10/2021 23:59

No Walmart in Manhattan, sorry

honeyfox · 26/10/2021 00:14

Another vote for the giant bottles of ibuprofen and naproxen capsules, and the ibuprofen PM ones with diphenhydramine.

Also a thumbs up to the Ghirardelli chocolate!

Target has an excellent candy selection and stores in Manhattan.
Trader Joe’s and other nice grocers have maple sugar candy and maple syrup, which are lovely. Choose Fancy or Grade A for best flavor,

@Davros

Anything from Henri Bendell
It went out if business.

Montreal steak seasoning.

Fresh NYC bagels: have him buy them just before he leaves for the airport, they travel really well.

I was going to suggest rice Krispy treats cereal, but I see it’s been discontinued, and now I am sad.

Finally, someone else who appreciates that Ghirardelli's is fabulous!

@dreamingbohemian

As an American living in the UK I can confirm that it's all about the OTC medicine. Yes you can get great clothes deals but not easy for someone else to do for you.

What I ask for from visitors:

Mucinex -- the most amazing cold/flu medicine ever. Literally wakes you from the dead.
Giant honking bottles of Tylenol PM (paracetamol+sleep med) and ibuprofen and allergy meds
Melotonin
Ouchless plasters
Neosporin (antibiotic cream)
Triaminic cough and cold syrups for kids

Otherwise is he going to do anything touristy? The museum shops there are amazing.

I was going to say this also. The NYC library shop is great and I don’t think many people think of it. It’s a neat place to walk around actually. And the real Winnie the Pooh stuffed bear is there along with his friends.
MissConductUS · 26/10/2021 01:28

The Metropolitan Museum gift shop is also fabulous. Most of the items are based on pieces in the collection. Amazing silk scarves designed from the impressionist paintings.

We have a holiday home in America after spending time there as a teenager. When ever anyone goes they’re have to bring back Cheez It’s. I also enjoy a bottle or two of Mr Pibb but I think it may be a southern thing.

steff13 · 26/10/2021 01:56

We have Mr Pibb in Ohio. I always thought it was off-brand Dr Pepper.

LaurenKelsey · 26/10/2021 02:24

I live in the US. Get a box of See’s chocolate. It’s amazing! There is a See’s Candies shop on 8th Ave. in NYC.

LaurenKelsey · 26/10/2021 02:26

I think Mr. Pibb is a knockoff of Dr. Pepper. Also, someone mentioned Cheez It’s. I’m a big fan of those too!

fibrecruncher · 26/10/2021 02:31

C.O. Bigelow lemon hand cream was a firm favourite of mine when I lived in the States. And milk duds.

fibrecruncher · 26/10/2021 02:33

And Snyders honey mustard and pretzel pieces

Gingerspice100 · 26/10/2021 02:37

Bagels (everything bagels are my go to)!

fibrecruncher · 26/10/2021 02:43

[quote RandomLondoner]I'm a weirdo that actually likes hershey's chocolate

Fun fact. The people who say it tastes/smells like vomit are literally correct. In the days before refrigerated trucks, Americans started adding Butyric acid to milk to preserve it while it was being transported over long distances. It is this that gives Hersheys chocolate its unexpected (to Europeans) aroma. This is the same chemical that gives vomit its smell.

I assume Americans don't notice it because they are nose-blind as a result of being used to it.

I have just googled this link, not read it, but it looks like it will confirm what I've just said.

Thanks! That was really interesting. I could never quite understand herself till now.

fibrecruncher · 26/10/2021 02:44

Argh autocorrect! not herself should be Hersheys

fibrecruncher · 26/10/2021 02:48

Jeremiah Weed Sweet tea liqueur is delicious

caketiger · 26/10/2021 03:00

Unisom sleep tablets. Work really well. Love USA pharmacies. Also antibacterial wound gel.

KobaniDaughters · 26/10/2021 03:04

Brit here living in the US (west coast) for a decade but moving home next year 🤞🏻 And have already started compiling my list. A few of these already mentioned but worth mentioning again:

Melatonin (get 5mg and 10mg so you can work out what works best for you, I never go above 5mg but DH needs the stronger stuff) and melatonin for kids

Everything but the bagel seasoning

Furikake seasoning

Almost everything in trader joes (oh good I’m going to miss it!) but especially the just mango dried mango, the cashews almonds and cranberries trail mix, trader joe’s O’s in multiple flavours, Green tea mints for DD

Kimchi siracha from wholefoods

Fruit roll ups

Elderberry gummies and cough syrup

….having said this there is a LOT I’m looking forward to getting regularly again in the U.K.

LaurenKelsey · 26/10/2021 03:24

This has been a fun thread. Nothing to complain or argue about!😆
