To ask that people state age not school year when talking generally about children?

clockover · 25/10/2021 19:28

Please?

It would make things much easier for those of us who don't instantly know what Y4 etc is. I know how to convert it but I just think on a thread where it's not school related, but definitely age related, giving the child's age would be more appropriate.

@stingofthebutterfly

I assume that 99% of people here went to school in the UK. Even if you don't have kids, you can't be that oblivious, surely?
It's not about being oblivious, it's about not wanting to have to calculate a child's age just to understand the full context of a post.

It would make no difference to the poster if they said DD6 instead of DD yr11 for example, but it would be a lot bloody quicker to get the correct context and background!

Reas the bloody thread.

I went to school in the UK. I have children in school in the UK.
I dont know what bloidy year 4 is.

The UK is not just fucking England and Wales.[/quote]
You seem overly irate and I have read the thread, thanks. I can understand the other systems in the UK by using common sense. Seems you can't, and I'm sorry that you lack basic research skills.

Thecurtainsofdestiny · 25/10/2021 20:15

It is an entirely reasonable request, OP.

SylvanasWindrunner · 25/10/2021 20:16

Love the UK comments Grin UK isn't just England, shocking as some may find that. I'm in Scotland and struggle with the Year X stuff because we don't have that format. We have P1-7 and then S1-6 so Year 11 is for example is not instantly recognisable to me, whereas obviously an age is.

I'd always use age because I don't assume that everyone reading my post is from the same place as me.

SheWoreYellow · 25/10/2021 20:17

Ok @stingofthebutterfly

What age is an S4 child? Grin

TheChiefJo · 25/10/2021 20:17

I agree, OP. Everyone knows what age is.

museumum · 25/10/2021 20:17

Yep. Esp years 8/9 etc. Which we don’t have in Scotland as we start again at 1 for the first year of secondary.
But that’s just the U.K. all round. England is the default the rest of us minorities. It’s not English peoples fault.

Age is easier, my sons five, I keep thinking he is still in year 1, but actually he is in year 2.

Simonjt · 25/10/2021 20:18

Oh, and hes six not five, I’m going to win Dad of the year 🤣

dementedpixie · 25/10/2021 20:19

@GraceLace

Well no. This is a parenting site where the majority of posters are in the UK or have a a UK connection for a start.

If you have a gap in your knowledge it's best to try and learn the school years and ages rather than everyone else adjusting the way they post.

It would probably only take about ten minutes and you would only need to learn about four and then you could use that to work our the rest.

I'm in the UK but as I'm in Scotland the school years are not the same as in England so it is hard to judge age/stage from just giving the year group at school

I did go to school in the UK and I also have children in school in the UK.

Yanbu.
I have teens and the new system of school years still irritates me.

satci · 25/10/2021 20:20

@liveforsummer

"Year 4" is different in NI and would be called P4 in Scotland

Year 4 in Scotland is P3

Isn't it p5?
DramaAlpaca · 25/10/2021 20:21

I agree, as I'm not in the UK. I'm English originally but the names of school years have changed since I last lived there. I know enough to be able to work it out, but agree stating the age would make things easier for me to understand without any mental gymnastics.

liveforsummer · 25/10/2021 20:22

@satci yes you're right. I even know the year comparisons and still getting muddled so OP definitely has a point 😆

stingofthebutterfly · 25/10/2021 20:23

What age is an S4 child? Grin

Roughly year 11.
TheNoodlesIncident · 25/10/2021 20:23

It would be a lot simpler to just include both facts, surely that would cover all bases? Eg my DS (13) is in Year 9, he has an August birthday so will always be 13 throughout the entire school year blah blah.

I would perhaps mention that he is in Y9 because that means he is not expected to be considering what subjects he will do for GCSE, or similar relevant thing, but I wouldn't state what year he was in and not his age at all.

I do agree with OP that clarity is important, although some posters will still ask how old the child is even if you put it in the title as well as the opening post...

DeepaBeesKit · 25/10/2021 20:24

Sometimes its very relevant to the context. Eg say its October time and someone is posting something about school curriculum and they say their child is 7.

7 could be year 2 old in year or year 3, younger. One is key stage 1, the other is key stage 2, so the school year group is more relevant than the age.

SheWoreYellow · 25/10/2021 20:25

Year 4 in Scotland is P3

Isn't it p5?”

It’s neither.
P1 sits between reception and Yr1
So P2 is between Yr1 and yr2

Yr 4 could be p4 or p5.

HarlanPepper · 25/10/2021 20:25

"Well no. This is a parenting site where the majority of posters are in the UK or have a a UK connection for a start."

England ≠ the UK. Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.

stingofthebutterfly · 25/10/2021 20:25

@SylvanasWindrunner which is exactly what people can do if they don't know the equivalent of year 7 is and it is bothering them enough to matter to them. Takes seconds.

I understand it's relevant in the context of school, but I was asking outwith school related content.

@Legoisthebest

Grace This may be a UK site but the UK consists of England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland. Scotland and Northern Ireland label their school years differently. "Year 4" is different in NI and would be called P4 in Scotland but their cut off ages are different so I don't think the age group is completely the same.
Y4 is P5 in Scotland.
AosSi · 25/10/2021 20:28

Yanbu OP. Of course, if they're talking about the y2 curriculum then refer to y2. For anything else though it's just confusing. Or even include both age and year to cover both bases!

Perhaps I will start posting about Senior Infants or Transition Year and expect posters to know what age group that is...
