To put the heating on?

I usually wait until November at least to try and save a little money but it's so cold, I want to give in! 🥶

Frauhubert · 24/10/2021 15:45

Erm. I had heating on a few times during summer

maybelou · 24/10/2021 15:46

Didnt realise people felt so strongly about this 😂 I must be looking on MN at the wrong times of day as I never see these thousands of heating threads.

I've decided that instead of putting it on I'm going to cook a massive roast that will warm the house (and me) up Grin

FangsForTheMemory · 24/10/2021 16:10

NOT a massive roast, OP?!!!

Think of the environment!

etulosba · 24/10/2021 16:14

What is it with this site and heating? It's insane.i've never known any other forum where people feel they have to ask for permission to put their heating on.

It was always a very popular topic on the Moneysaving Expert forum.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 24/10/2021 16:15

Mine's been on for a few weeks and if it gets really cold I shall whack the thermostat up high. I spent my childhood in a house that got so cold that the inside of the windows would freeze and we would have to wear coats indoors. I always promised myself that when I had my own place I would never be that cold again.

gogohm · 24/10/2021 16:17

Put ours on yesterday, Saturday morning just got too cold to be comfortable

Bluntness100 · 24/10/2021 16:18

How big does a joint of meat need to be for it to heat your whole house?

nc87653 · 24/10/2021 16:19

Nope. A perfect 22C inside at the moment!

Coogee · 24/10/2021 16:35

and if it gets really cold I shall whack the thermostat up high

Our thermostat setting never changes regardless of the temperature outside. It just gets left to do it’s job, keeping the house at a set level of warmth.

minimecantrollerskate · 24/10/2021 16:48

My heating goes on if I am colder no matter what the date is. I put it on in August if its really cold outside!

I usually have it on 23 when I am in the house, and it comes on for 2 hours in the morning at 20 and then not again until 3.30pm ready for coming home from work/school. Although since working at home full time, I will put it on in the day if its cold.

It is my house, my bills, my heating, so if I want it on I put it on.

I laugh at people who insist it shouldn't go on between April and October, and they laugh at me for putting mine on. Each to their own.

RampantIvy · 24/10/2021 17:17

I can put on as many jumpers and pairs of socks as I want but if the air is still cold it's bloody miserable here!

I'm the same. Hot people just don't seem to get that cold people feel cold because the ambient temperature is cold. I am not one of those people who turn the heating up because I want to wear summer clothes. I wear warm clothes in cold weather, but still need some background heat.

And if you live somewhere where it rains a lot the house feels even colder if you don't have the heating on.

TheFairyCaravan · 24/10/2021 20:24

Shitting hell! I’ve never felt the need to justify my heating habits before but here we are. I live in a very old, draughty house that doesn’t meet the decent homes standard. It’s not mine, we’re in the process of buying. We can hear the wind whistle through the gaps around our doors.

I’m disabled and am riddled with arthritis. If I get cold I actually hurt more than usual. It’s very difficult to keep this house warm, hence why we need to put the heating on more than the average person and I’m constantly making blankets.

delilahbucket · 24/10/2021 20:28

Ours has been coming on for weeks up north. It's on a thermostat so if it drops below 19 during the day when we're in or 20 in the evening, it will kick in. Some days it's been on for a couple of hours. I grew up in a freezing cold house with no heating and it was miserable. Sure, we put jumpers on, thick socks, even get out the blankets, but if it's cold it's cold and I'd rather make other cut backs than have to worry about staying warm. We're fortunate we can make that decision.

worrieddaughterrr · 24/10/2021 23:10

'I only put the heating on for five minutes once a year in January and the rest of the time I wear ten pairs of socks and four jumpers' is the new Mumsnet chicken.

Love it.

LittleBearPad · 24/10/2021 23:33

I have literally no idea when our heating comes on. The thermostat is set at 20ish. The heating does what it does to achieve this temperature.

If it’s chilly in the sitting room I light the fire. I don’t need MNs permission. Very odd

Luckytattie · 24/10/2021 23:34

My heating's been on for at least s month..

No point bring a martyr about switching heating on.

LeSquigh · 25/10/2021 09:44

For those of you who have your thermostats set to 15, you must be freezing all the time. I have had my hearing on since September. I am in the south of England too. It is set to come on with the thermostat at 19 but I regularly whack it up to 20.5 because I’m not warm otherwise. We do have a Victorian house with no cavity though which doesn’t help.

FlipFlops4Me · 25/10/2021 13:14

My DH is disabled and moves very slowly. He wears a T shirt and sweatshirt but still feels the cold. I keep the house warmer than most just to keep him comfortable. I keep the heating on the thermostat at night and set it at 18 because he isn't always able to pull the duvet over himself if it's been pulled off, or if he's had to get out. I wake up every couple of hours to check on him but I don't want him frozen if I happen to sleep for an extra hour.

It costs more than we'd like it to, but it's important.

PinkSyCo · 25/10/2021 14:34

I love how defensive everyone gets about putting their heating on. Grin

myusernamewastakenbyme · 25/10/2021 14:58

Im in Norfolk and its been a lovely sunny day here today...ive had my doors and windows open all day so no heating needed here yet.

FourTeaFallOut · 25/10/2021 15:08

The thermostat keeps the house at a daytime temperature of 20c. Sometimes I hit boost if I want it warmer than that.

FourTeaFallOut · 25/10/2021 15:09

13c here today, feels like 11c with a low of 7c tonight.

Posting that you're hungry and that you normally eat at 7 but it's 6 and you're not sure if you can hold out so what should you do?
Bonkers, isn't it?
Lazydaisydaydream · 25/10/2021 20:09

id rather not have icicles hanging from my tits

Grin🤣🤣 this made me properly laugh.

Some people seem to have taken my comment in a very negative way Hmm. I honestly didn’t realise it was a thing to need heating on for so long, it must cost a fortune? I have fallen victim to the Mumsnet issue of forgetting not everyone lives the same experience. My apologies!
