I ruined the ghost hunt

I was away last week staying in a castle. Supposedly a very haunted castle but I don’t believe in shit like that, I just like history.

Anyway during the night there was a paranormal investigation going on. I had to walk through the castle on my own to retrieve something from the car and as I walked through one room these guys were surrounding a door recording it and had all their equipment set up around it etc. I needed to get through it. I held back a bit (this was 10pm at night and I was tired, wanting to go to bed). Anyway the door moved slightly and they all got excited. I seriously just needed to get to my car so pointed out that this particular door always moves due to the draught coming up the stairs. Well they all looked daggers at me and asked what I was doing there!! I said I needed to get through the door! So they huffed ans puffed and moved all their shit and the leader said they would have to start again due to interference. I went through, got the stuff out of my car and made my way back through the castle. Unfortunately they had set all their stuff up again. I went through the door and set all the alarms off and they got angry and one said “let’s move to a different area, this is ridiculous”. I didn’t say anything, just headed back to my apartment.

Later that night I opened the bedroom window and instantly was hit with torches in my face. They had got excited due to “movement” from a “haunted room”. I got annoyed, went down to where they were and asked how much longer this would be going on. They said all night. So I told them where I was staying, pointed to the windows and said any movement from these rooms is just me walking around. They were not friendly. As I was speaking one started shrieking about a chandelier swinging in another room and they all went running. I went with them and pointed out the big fuck off fireplace that would inevitably cause a draught going through the room causing anything “hanging” to move. I was then told to “go away!” And was told I was ruining a night that had been planned for months. I told them they were ruining my night that had been planned for months too.
Who was being unreasonable?

There are different elements:

Belief in God (or similar)
Being involved in organised religion that may tell their followers not to have the vaccine

Plenty of people only do one or the other

With your attitude, don't expect them to be grateful for putting them straight. And don't expect to change their minds

You think ghosts are rubbish - fine - but this was something that they enjoyed and you ruined it for them. You didn't have to be so sneery and unkind.

Do they promote other harmful things like women shouldn't wear certain things or people of other religions are worth less?

In the schools here girls wear skirts, they're not allowed trousers. And the boys aren't allowed skirts. Do you have a go at the school staff? What about Christenings? Do you "challenge" vicars, imams and rabbis @JesusIsAnyNameFree? Or religious people attending church/temple?

Personally I think they're a bunch of con artists, and the fact that they were disturbing your evening gives you the right to say anything you want! The fact you just pointed out facts rather than saying anything rude just shows them up a bit!

Well, more schools are allowing trousers and the ones that don't are sexist, outdated and frankly, disgusting.

I do indeed, if the opportunity presents itself. I don't chase the vicar down the street to have a go though. I'm not a nutter.

Who’s the con artist? The owner of the castle? Then don’t take it out on some other guests having fun.

I’ve just booked the London Ghost Bus Tour for my kids for half term as it’s nearly Hallowe’en. Shall I mention on TripAdvisor after that it’s a con? Shall I shout out at regular intervals, “of course it’s not true - and look, that man is in a costume! And those lights suddenly going out - he’s got a switch!”? 🙄

See, to other less self-righteous people, this just comes across as arrogant and a complete overstepping of your rights and remit.

IME, people who have a desperate need to always be right and then try to impose that on others have a need that’s not being met, but are looking to get that need met in any unhealthy way.

The irony is that when you try to bludgeon other people into agreeing with your world view by angry, intolerant and judgemental means, it usually has the opposite effect. They become more entrenched in their views. So you attempting to shout people down may give you an outlet to vent your anger, but that will be it, you won’t change their mind.

It’s not your place to police other peoples’ beliefs and it is arrogant and lacking in self awareness to be so cock-sure that you are right that you seek to impose your own beliefs on others.

You could have really scared them - woo noises, bed sheet over you, knocking etc! 👻👻👻
