If you found money in a self service till would you keep?

Today, I stupidly asked for cash back at self service till in Asda and didn't pick it up. It was only £10 that I needed for something and could have been worse but I'm kicking myself!!

After I paid and didn't realise I had forgot the money I was queueing/waiting at customer services to pick up a parcel. Got in my car and thought shit, I forgot my money. Went back in. Not in the till I used, was hoping someone had handed it in and they hadn't... tbf if someone handed it in I would I have realised as I was waiting for parcel!

It's only £10. But money is so tight atm we had a lot of unexpected costs - car repairs, hiuse repairs as well as thinking shout dare I say it, Christmas. The thing I needed money for is now technically going to cost me £20.

I feel so crap. That could have been £10 extra for an afternoon out at the arcades with dc during half term. £10 for food.

I hate losing things. I ended up having a on ths attack on the way home. It's only £10 but every little helps atm!

Aibu to to think if you found money in the checkout, however little you would hand it in. J would.

Many years ago, I did the same. Thankfully a young lad ran after me with the money which I was grateful!

I'm just beating myself over something I can't change. Anxiety sucks!

OP - The cashier didn't give it to you, rather than you not picking it up. I would speak to the store manager

It was self service the OP did forget to pick it up.

AlfonsoTheDinosaur · 22/10/2021 20:48

No. The two times I have I've taken it to the till, letting them know.

Sadly it was self service and it was my fault. Would just hope someone would hand it in which they didn't. 😪

I did exactly the same once OP but with £30. It did get handed in and the Asda staff were so lovely. I ended up stuffing a tenner of it in the charity collection they were doing because I was so grateful.

I found £5 change in the self service til, I kept it

I found £40 sticking out of the ATM as I walked past, I kept it.

It might have been for someone hard up for money, but in reality I didn't think of that at the time. And to be frank, if that was me and I was hard up for cash, I definitely wouldn't forget it so ... 🤷

That £40 would have been sucked back in if you hadn’t taken it and credited back to their account. It’s theft.

About 25 years ago when I was a teenager I found £80 on the pavement and took it to the police station. A pensioner came and asked about it later that day and was in tears when he was given it back, said it was his pension money and he’d been scared he wouldn’t be able to eat.

mobear · 22/10/2021 21:31

Whenever I find money in the street I give it to a homeless person because I think the chances of it finding it’s owner again is low. But in your situation, I’d probably hand it to customer service.

Cocopopsss · 22/10/2021 22:50

I did this a few years ago but with £50 Shock

CCTV showed the couple after me had pocketed it. Nothing police would/could do though, so that was that. I was so
Annoyed with myself and actually avoided self aervice tills if I needed cashback

Chloemol · 22/10/2021 23:27

No I wouldn’t keep it. I would hand it in

RufustheBadgeringReindeer · 22/10/2021 23:31

A note I’d definitely hand in…id probably hand the change in as well but not if it was in the pennys

I dropped £50 Christmas money in a queue once, left the store and a fee minutes later realised what id done and went back in to ask the cashier if anyone had handed it in

They said theyd seen the person after me bend down and pick something up but hadn’t seen what they’d picked up…nothing had been handed in

Thieving bastards

salsmum · 23/10/2021 03:14

I personally would have handed it in.. but if I lose something I don't seem to ever get it back. Somebody posted on the local fb page the other day saying she'd gone to use the atm and somebody before her ( who she didn't know) had left the cash in the machine, instead of grabbing and handing back into the bank she just stood there until the atm took back the cash which apparently gets back to the person who lost it, if it's taken into the bank it takes forever and sometimes the 'loser' never gets it back.

madisonbridges · 23/10/2021 03:18

I did it with £100. No one handed it in. I cried. Then I hoped they bought loads of rich food and choked on it. I would always hand money in. Maybe not coins but notes, always.

ElftonWednesday · 23/10/2021 04:19

I remember as a student leaving my purse on the bus when it had an unusually huge amount in it for me then - £60. Someone handed it in, all money intact at the bus station. Another time I drew money out on a windy day and the notes went everywhere. People ran round collecting them - and handing them to me! So kind.

Something similar happened but more random when we were at a small theme park, no-one around, DD2 who was about six at the time spotted a whole loads of notes blowing around, no-one else around at all. We picked them up and just waited for a few moments- and a woman ran up looking distraught and clearly looking for something. We returned her money and she gave DD2 £10, who was absolutely delighted! I've always found bank cards, wallets, etc and managed to get them back to the person by local Facebook if there wasn't an obvious place to hand things in.

I'm sorry this has happened, OP, and hope you have a lucky windfall and find an unexpected tenner in a coat you haven't worn for a while! I suppose as others have said, the machine might have swallowed it if the money wasn't taken.

I didn't even know the self-service tills did cashback so I have learned something.

pelosi · 23/10/2021 04:35

Yes, I would hand it in and I’m grateful to the people/assistants who handed mine in.

Maybe contact the bank, in case the money didn’t come out?

So do i, they seem conducive to forgetting your money,
TasteTheMeatNotTheHeat · 23/10/2021 04:39

Yes I would hand it in, but surely you didn't really expect to see that tenner again once you realised you'd left it in the machine? Loads of people take things that they find. It's shitty and unfair but it is very normal and I wouldn't have expected to get that money back.

If they have cameras then maybe you can ask them to refund you?

pelosi · 23/10/2021 04:49

It’s always worth going back. The times i left / dropped cash, it was handed in.

Grizzlydog · 23/10/2021 04:59

I would hand it in. It's theft by finding and you could get a record for keeping it. Although I do wonder if staff members then just keep it rather than return it.

If you knew the time you were there they could probably check cctv and if the person who took it paid by card it would be easy to trace them but it's a lot of work for little return so I doubt the police would investigate.

I would check again with a different staff member just to be sure and maybe get them to check cctv.

Bumblenums1234 · 23/10/2021 05:15

I was behind a lady once who forgot a river in the self service in a small shop, I called after her but she didn't hear me so I ran after her with my full basket of shopping. Obviously forgot myself and ran out to the car park. She was very grateful but the team though I was legging it without paying haha. They understood when I explained Grin

Andwander · 23/10/2021 06:52

I am sorry you lost the money. When things like this happen to me,I try to remember that really there could me much much worse things in life.It helps letting go.To be honest,I also think most people that wrote they would hand in the money are not honest; most people would NOT hand in £10.its shite when you lose money, but its much shittier if you lose a pet or god forbid a human.I wish you all the best and who knows, one day you find £10.

knittingaddict · 23/10/2021 07:16

No, I would have handed it in to the shop.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 23/10/2021 07:18

I'd hand it in. I went to self service recently and the lady in front of me got cashback, must have been about £60. She walked off and left it! I chased her and gave it back.

PurpleFlower1983 · 23/10/2021 07:22

I would have definitely handed it in but as others have said all the machines have CCTV so I would expect the store to check who has stolen it! I did this at a cash machine once (back when the cash used to come out after the card). It was £50 and I was gutted. I went back to look and an old man said, ‘Is this your money love?’, he was just heading into the bank with it. I was so grateful. I always think losing money feels worse than losing an item.

Staryflight445 · 23/10/2021 07:27

No I wouldn’t keep it because it isn’t mine. I would take it to customer service though.

MagentaRocks · 23/10/2021 07:28

If it was a couple of coins I wouldn’t hand it in, probably wouldn’t even notice anyway. But I would hand it in if there was a tenner or something there.
