If you found money in a self service till would you keep?

Today, I stupidly asked for cash back at self service till in Asda and didn't pick it up. It was only £10 that I needed for something and could have been worse but I'm kicking myself!!

After I paid and didn't realise I had forgot the money I was queueing/waiting at customer services to pick up a parcel. Got in my car and thought shit, I forgot my money. Went back in. Not in the till I used, was hoping someone had handed it in and they hadn't... tbf if someone handed it in I would I have realised as I was waiting for parcel!

It's only £10. But money is so tight atm we had a lot of unexpected costs - car repairs, hiuse repairs as well as thinking shout dare I say it, Christmas. The thing I needed money for is now technically going to cost me £20.

I feel so crap. That could have been £10 extra for an afternoon out at the arcades with dc during half term. £10 for food.

I hate losing things. I ended up having a on ths attack on the way home. It's only £10 but every little helps atm!

Aibu to to think if you found money in the checkout, however little you would hand it in. J would.

Many years ago, I did the same. Thankfully a young lad ran after me with the money which I was grateful!

I'm just beating myself over something I can't change. Anxiety sucks!

I guess lots of people would swipe your money, without any guilt. You have to be on the ball with your money at all times.

DontPeeInThePlayHouse · 22/10/2021 19:37

I did this once, fortunately the person after me was very honest and handed it in. So grateful to them as it was much needed and would have been sorely missed at the time.

Georgyporky · 22/10/2021 19:38

I don't think anyone on MN would admit to keeping it!

I once found a fiver on a garage forecourt late at night.
I kept it ; it was either me or the cashier if I handed it in.

LivingNextDoorToNorma · 22/10/2021 19:39

Is it possible that the machine took it back? Years ago, my now dh accidentally left his holiday money in the cash machine. It must have been left too long, because the machine had sucked it back in.

Can you phone the shop and ask them to check if there’s a variance when they cash up?

Arbitan · 22/10/2021 19:42

I’d have either handed it in or just left it sticking out of the machine. I wouldn’t hand in change - I’d just leave it. Not really worth being accused of theft for.

icedcoffees · 22/10/2021 19:42

Don't the machines swallow the cash if it's been sat there too long? Did it definitely come out of your account?

It was a self service till. Not sure if they swallow the money back in or not? It was really busy so likely someone jumped into the till straight after me and seen it! I didn't realise until about 10 minutes after! Long gone by that point I expect!

I wouldn’t, but Im in a financial position that losing / finding a tenner wouldn’t make much difference to me.

Plenty of others aren’t so lucky. Not that it justifies keeping the money, but perhaps it would be more understandable.

My banking app is showing pending as the amount I spent including the £10 cash back (£50 food and £10 cash back). 🥴

Some people are just not honest I think & some are very honest . - Another example I found a purse near the little corner shop - £200 in it. I took round to the police station - no-one collected it but I tried to give it back. I once lost a bracelet coming back from the shops - it was special and quite ( not very ) expensive - not one person handed it in. Takes all sorts I suppose - though on the other hand I left my handbag on the garden wall when wrestling DCs in & forgot. - some lovely lady took it to the police station & I got it back - if only I knew her name I would say Thank you. It was my fault but she was lovely.

I just hope whoever has it needs it more than us! Usually we do okay financially but there's just been a ton of different things to pay out for lately and we only have dp's wage at the minute with a mortgage etc which is a struggle, as I'm currently not working! 😀

Sometimes stuff shows as pending and then bounces back iyswim - all may not be lost :)

JurgensCakeBaby · 22/10/2021 19:53

I have left money in self service tills and twice in ATMs every time I got it back, twice because someone handed it in and once because after a while if no one takes it the money gets sucked back into the cash point, the one I used had a stream of people going past it. So it gives me faith there must be a fair few good people out there. I've never found money like that but would hand it in if I did.

NoDecentHandlesLeft · 22/10/2021 19:59

I would hand it in.
Felt bad when I picked up a trolly with a £1 coin left in a few weeks ago! Put it in the charity box on the way out...

sweeneytoddsrazor · 22/10/2021 20:01

The money will not get sucked back into a self scan machine and the next customer cannot use it whilst there is a note in the slot, so the customer after you on the machine must have taken it.

Suzi888 · 22/10/2021 20:01

@Patapouf

Don't supermarket self service tills have cameras? The staff should have reissued your cash back.
^ this Someone was arrested in our local store- it’s classed as stealing.
MrsMiddleMother · 22/10/2021 20:12

I wouldn't keep it and would hand it in. I've found myself doing cash back on a self service til only to get to the car, realise I've forgotten it and it's gone by the time I get back.

underneaththeash · 22/10/2021 20:15

OP - The cashier didn't give it to you, rather than you not picking it up. I would speak to the store manager.

fanjosaysi · 22/10/2021 20:19

I don't know what I'd do

It's not like a wallet that's identifying. Anyone staff child just take it if not claimed, plus the owner probably wouldn't know where to go to get it back. Can't really announce to shoppers " can the owner of the tender please come to the front ". Everyone would be queuing up!

But I wouldn't want to take someone's money either, I've had someone do the same with £40.

fanjosaysi · 22/10/2021 20:22

The worst part about losing something is thinking some entitled person just nicked it. You've got to remember they may be a perfectly decent person who just didn't know what to do with a lost bill and kept it.

User00000000 · 22/10/2021 20:23

I'd keep a few random coins left, but not a £10. The guilt would eat at me too much.

Lightswitch123 · 22/10/2021 20:26

I did not realise you can do cash back on a self service till!!! (Missing the point)

I would have handed it in / tried to chase after person who left it.

Sorry OPFlowers

Coulddowithanap · 22/10/2021 20:32

I'd keep a few coins left behind but not any notes.

I've been really lucky with tesco in that I've left my bank card in the machine a few times and it's always been handed in.

DragonDoor · 22/10/2021 20:33

I can understand that you are kicking yourself and dwelling on it, but do your best to let that thought go.

In the past, I’ve been distracted enough to actually walk away from ATM machines without picking up cash.

Along with rubbish, I’ve thrown notes in the bin, and even on an open fire! All this when I was properly skint and then couldn’t afford food.

I imagine the person who found it thought it was uncollected change.

I would think that most adults in a comfortable financial position would have alerted staff, but it could have been a teenager or someone in dire straits that found it.

Your money could have been spent in a bookies, but on the bright side it could have put food on the table for a family.

Bingbong21 · 22/10/2021 20:39

I pick up odds bits of change but I'd never take a note!
