Carseats on pram frame

I've seen a lot of people using a car seat on the pram frame instead of a carry cot. Now obviously if you drive baby will have been in seat then taken from car and onto frame. But I've also seen someone describe it as barbaric to use a car seat attached if they don't drive and should only use carry cot.

Is it barbaric? Should people only use car seat part if they drive? Would you ask everyone that has a car seat on a frame if they drive?

I used to put the car seat in the pram frame because I didn't want to wake my babies. I also used to being the car seat in and put it in he floor as I napped. They're 5 and 9 and haven't mutated into mutants yet so I'm thinking all is good

But i had PND and getting sleep and leave was instrumental in me not having a total nervous breakdown so sometimes it's ok to weigh up official guidance with common sense

As long as baby is tightly strapped in still (when you do it correctly it helps keep baby firm and not slumped over and therefore safe and able to breathe), I don't see the problem with using a car seat even if you don't drive, presumably you'd still need it if you went in a taxi or a friend/family members car.
You'd need to take baby out every 45 mins anyway, just the same as in an actual car.

If you have the carrycot you can use that as well, but they are a lot bulkier and take up a lot of space say if you just want to pop to the shops or know you might have to fit in a smaller space. Or as some people have said, maybe the carrycot is dirty or a part of it is broken etc

This is so funny because I literally wanted to post something about this same situation yesterday too😂

I have a 5 month old and I don't drive. I never even used the carry cot, I went straight from using the car seat and then turned the carry cot into the a pram when my daughter was about 4 months old.
I think the longest my daughter has ever been in her buggy for is one hour. None of my friends that have young babies drive and we've all had our babies in car seats as opposed to a carrycot. One of my friend's son is now one and still in the car seat.

When my daughter was younger I was always in and out of a cab so it was more convenient for me. I also found the buggy lighter to push with only the car seat in. Once I had my daughter in the pram I found it so much chunky and harder to navigate.

When I'm out and about I always see younger parents (similar to mine and my friends ages) with their baby in a car seat and not a carrycot. Of course I don't know how many of those people drive but always wondered why we were using car seats and not carry cots lol

@Marelle

A car seat is to keep a baby safe in the car. End of. It’s stupid and unhealthy to put it on a pram frame. Babies need to lie flat for proper spinal development. Although frankly I don’t give a shit if strangers’ babies end up with deformed spines so I wouldn’t say anything to them.
Whenever I see your comments you always sound so miserable😂

101, sorry!

Wrong thread, sorry

I was advised to use car seat for medical reasons, so don't judge what you don't know.

Fallagain · 24/10/2021 21:07

I wouldn’t say anything. From a safety and health point of view its 30 mins max for the first 6 weeks for full term babies and 2 hours max after that.

DD2 hated the carrycot, she had sever reflux due to allergies. When using the car seat I would always pop the car seat on the frame of pram, bags underneath, have my older child holding the pram until we walked to where we were going and then I would put DD2 in the sling. One snap shot does not tell you what is happening.

Ditto. My first born had reflux and was losing weight due to it's severity so I was told to prop her cot up at one end and use the car seat on wheels rather than a carry cot.

I always did it, I don’t know if yours is the same but the car seat is slightly less inclined when in the pushchair that in the car. Much smaller and easier when hopping on and off busses.

Going against the grain here but I never once put the car seat on the buggy frame, even though I'd specifically bought a travel system with the adaptors and a compatible seat etc etc.

I only ever drove to places that were inside, which I'd walk into anyway - baby born in the dead of winter. I'd sometimes take the car seat out and carry it into my house/mum's house/the doctor's/wherever and wait a few minutes for DS to wake up. I always thought clicking the carseat on to the buggy frame would probably wake him up anyway.

I did quite often used to take him for a walk in the carrycot on the pram to get him to sleep, and then push the whole thing inside the house and either leave him snoozing or take the carrycot off and put it in a quiet corner of the room. The carrycot on my pram was suitable for overnight sleeping and DS liked it a lot more than his moses basket as it was darker and smaller. Our carrycot got waaaay more use than the carseat adaptors.

Skysblue · 25/10/2021 09:47

An infant car sear should be used for ONE hour maximum because its bad for the spine. Google it.

And yes if I saw someone who used it all the time I would think they were a moron.

OctoberRose21 · 25/10/2021 09:51

OMG there's nothing wrong with it as long as it's not all the time for long periods. Christ some people 😂

FartnissEverbeans · 25/10/2021 13:22

So what am I supposed to do if I can’t drive?!
