Carseats on pram frame

GrandTheftWalrus · 22/10/2021 10:17

I've seen a lot of people using a car seat on the pram frame instead of a carry cot. Now obviously if you drive baby will have been in seat then taken from car and onto frame. But I've also seen someone describe it as barbaric to use a car seat attached if they don't drive and should only use carry cot.

Is it barbaric? Should people only use car seat part if they drive? Would you ask everyone that has a car seat on a frame if they drive?

@GrandTheftWalrus

The reason I'm asking is someone told me it was barbaric that I use the car seat on the pram frame because I don't drive. I find it easier to push etc when the car seat part is on it. She's never in it for more than 2hrs. Usually 45 mins if I go to supermarket before school run. I see many people with a car seat on a frame and have never thought it was barbaric!
How is it easier to push?

If you don't need to use the car seat because you're not driving anywhere you're being ridiculous

GreenerGrass23 · 23/10/2021 08:41

I used the car seat on the buggy frame all the time!! Even if I was walking out of my front door and not driving.

My babies hated lying flat in the Carry cot and screamed the entire time which was too stressful. . They loved the car seat.

Simple as that.

I had a Cybex Cloud Z car seat, which reclines flat.
So I used to go for long walks with my twins in their car seats clipped onto my pram.

user1471604848 · 23/10/2021 09:33

It was a lot easier to push the buggy with two car seats, than two bassinets.

maternitycoat · 23/10/2021 10:27

I did it all the time. Baby preferred car seat and hated carry cot

No harm caused 🙄

Totallydefeated · 23/10/2021 17:38

It's even less than two hours now apparently. Recent HV said 15 minutes

Does this mean that babies aren’t supposed to be taken on any longer journeys now? Like no journeys to see relatives etc until they’re out of the infant car seat??

I think a 5 month old being in a car seat for 45 minutes a day - whether that’s in a car or on a buggy frame - comes very high on my list of absolute non-issues.

Mine were the same, but this was >10 years ago and I don’t think the risks were so well publicised. I don’t know whether I should feel guilty now but the kids are fine

no it doesnt mean that at all, what it means is if your journey would take you 4 hrs to get there then you are going to have to have a stop and get the baby out of the car seat, rather than doing it all in one go

Or for some people not going anywhere at all.

@Marelle

A car seat is to keep a baby safe in the car. End of. It’s stupid and unhealthy to put it on a pram frame. Babies need to lie flat for proper spinal development. Although frankly I don’t give a shit if strangers’ babies end up with deformed spines so I wouldn’t say anything to them.
What a horrible thing to say Sad
newnameday · 23/10/2021 20:28

They are amazing for taking baby for their midwife check ups at the hospital or to nip into baby group, but echoing the opinion that if it's a decent journey outside the car, a carrycot is needed.

Plotato · 23/10/2021 20:34

My baby is 9 months old - well past the lying flat in a carrycot stage but easily still fits in the infant car seat and will for a few more months. I stick it on the pram chassis when we're doing lots of errands getting in and out of the car at different points. Would the posters expressing they would never ever use a car seat in this way really not do this? Sometimes you're just making life more difficult for yourself.

Cryalot2 · 23/10/2021 20:47

I have often felt the same, especially when out walking.
All I can think is we are in for a generation of bad backs.
But its not my problem.

almaonao · 23/10/2021 20:53

Feel awful as I did not know this. I don't drive!!!

Fortunately my baby was born just before lockdown and we didn't go out much but goodness I wish someone had told me!!!

Stackycups · 23/10/2021 20:55

Utter bollocks. It was the only thing DD didn't cry about. She hated the cot base due to reflux. Her spine is fine. It was a only ever used for an hour max.

8dpwoah · 23/10/2021 21:03

@Otherpeoplesteens

I seem to recall the advice was that a baby should only be in an infant carrier a maximum of two hours at a time.

If a baby is asleep in one when you stop at Lidl on the 15 minute journey home, then an extra 20 minutes asleep in one while you pick up some wine and courgettes won't matter. If they have a two hour nap in one while you lunch, then put them in the car awake for an hour long drive, that's quite a different prospect.

You've seen me in Lidl with my courgettes and my car seat on the pram haven't you 😂 Absolutely have and will use car seat on frame for said wine & courgette stops (10 mins drive each way plus 15-20 in shop). Also do the same if I can't park near the doctors for example.

Day out at the zoo/round the shops/whatever? No, too long.

RobinPenguins · 23/10/2021 21:06

I don’t think it’s just to do with their spine, it’s about breathing position, isn’t it?

8dpwoah · 23/10/2021 21:08

Yes I think it's the chin on chest concern isn't it?

Youreacockarentyou · 23/10/2021 21:09

It’s not barbaric, they’re literally designed to do it. All 3 of my children would cry when they were in the carry cot & Moses basket (not) coincidentally.

Anyway, no one loves your child more than you & you know you wouldn’t do anything to risk there health. Tell anyone who questions you to fuck right off. & don’t ask mumsnet & expect rationalism - big bunch of hypochondriacs.

SnackSizeRaisin · 23/10/2021 21:09

Infant car seats can last up to 2 years (weight limit is usually 13 kg).
The 30 minute limit for being in a car seat only applies to young babies under 2 or 3 months. It's not a problem for older babies who can safely sit upright for much longer. A 6 month old would probably sit upright in a buggy so why shouldn't they sit upright in a car seat on a pram frame?

SylvanasWindrunner · 23/10/2021 21:13

Remember that there are quite a few lie-flat car seats on the market that don't have the chin-on-chest or positional asphyxia risks of standard car seats. Ours lay flat both in car and on the pram chassis, and I never bothered with a carrycot. With a standard seat, I probably would have.

YourFinestPantaloons · 23/10/2021 21:14

Barbaric 🤣🤣🤣 does this person happen to be a total fucking moron by any chance?

Plotato · 23/10/2021 21:15

Thank you! I was waiting for someone else to acknowledge that an older baby will likely be treated differently to a newborn.
