Anyone else feeling depressed about Covid?

Cases, deaths and hospitalisations all rising.

Media drip feeding about pressure on the NHS and new variants.

Feel like it's Groundhog Day with this government. Surely they cannot lock us down completely again?

@Unanananana - you think the media are shit stirring? So I assume you think 200+ deaths a day is acceptable?

shinynewapple21 · 20/10/2021 09:33

@antsinyourpanta I've recently visited Spain. Everyone was masked on the plane from what I could see although a lot of people in the queues at arrivals were wearing masks on chins (I think probably all British although couldn't say for definite)

Rules in Spain similar to ours earlier in the summer - masks indoors in shops and restaurants but take off at table . I also read that masks were meant to be worn outside in crowded areas but I'm not sure what was meant by that - possibly at a sports event?

MrsJBaptiste · 20/10/2021 09:55

How long do some of you think we should stay away from pubs, clubs, packed venues...?

I hated lockdown and luckily feel like everything is getting back to normal. I'm on my way to the airport where I'll wear a mask on the plane but other than that it does seem like things are moving forward, thank God.

shinynewapple21 · 20/10/2021 10:00

I can't see another full lockdown - country can't afford it and compliance in terms of people meeting friends / family indoors would be low.

Returning the masks on transport and in shops would be an easy thing to bring back though . Obviously some people are exempt- that's fine - but for most people wearing a mask for half an our isn't difficult - and protects people working in those environments too.

I get what people are saying about Scotland and numbers but who knows if numbers would have been higher without the masks? I'm guessing numbers in Scotland went up as schools returned and have now started to reduce . England a few weeks behind so maybe ours will naturally reduce in a few weeks too.

Agree that there are other nasty viruses about.

Where did I mention staying away from pubs? I won't be hugging strangers in packed venues any time soon though.

Heart/circulatory diseases cause 460 deaths per day, and people seem to think that's "acceptable" even though it would require less intrusive and damaging measures to reduce those deaths.

* No societal responsibility factoring into your thinking evidently.*

Oh I’m done with it.
Children
Family
Friends
Family of friends
Colleagues

Society

In that order

Needtostopfretting · 20/10/2021 10:32

Spoken like someone who has not watched a loved one die from this.

Sorry for you but I've literally sat and held the hands of two family members who've died from other things. Who knew you couldn't just die from Covid ...

Sunset999 · 20/10/2021 10:33
@notanothertakeaway What do you mean?

We're allowed to mix in pubs, hug each and we don't have to wear masks anymore. I don't see anything irresponsible in the PP's post.
Its massively irresponsible, just because the crap Government say we can do things doesn't mean we have to , common sense should prevail.

Needtostopfretting · 20/10/2021 10:33

Sunset999

Random one but did anyone like the lockdowns? I did....slower pace of life, quiet roads and got to really appreciate simple things

Nope, suspect you're very much in the minority there, lucky ole you Hmm

Sunset999 · 20/10/2021 10:35

Nah just being honest, the first one was ok and we came together as a family more, I have changed my life since Covid to a slower place and less stress, would not have changed it unless Covid hit

Needtostopfretting · 20/10/2021 10:40

You do you then as the kids say, if you want to enjoy your big garden and not socialise in pubs then frankly who cares but don't try stopping everyone else please

Sunset999 · 20/10/2021 10:41

I have been to pubs sometimes but we wear a mask, would not sit in groups etc, its about just still being vigilant surely ....

You can do this

But not everyone will feel or do the same. Which people just need to accept

KrispyKale · 20/10/2021 10:46

Our family was okay during lockdown though not ideal as we have young people who want to be spreading their wings.
However there have been so many downsides to general health of the population: in terms of older people not getting out and just looking frailer, younger ones putting on weight, reports of anxiety and depression, kids regressing at school or just giving up on recreational activities. Alcohol related deaths up. It's not a rosy health picture for lockdowns.

As a point to agree on is it not obvious that we need more beds/ staff in the NHS in the future? (Even the part animals will see they might get pneumonia one winter and benefit from hospital treatment!) Are there plans for that?

5128gap · 20/10/2021 11:48

There a huge amount of confirmation bias in the anecdotes offered from both sides. I'm well aware that my own experience, which is that few people are concerned anymore, and just want to resume their lives, is coloured by the fact that I tend to mix with like minded people. Obviously people with these views are going to be more likely to focus on the positives and be more inclined to talk about cases that were mild. I understand from these threads that there are clearly still people out there who are worried, are they are going to focus on examples of more serious illness, and worst case scenarios. Its been the same throughout the pandemic, with people's perceptions pretty much dictated by their personal level of fear. As with most things, reality may be somewhere in the middle.

longwayoff · 20/10/2021 12:01

The government's telling us not to be concerned so I'm expecting a tightening up safety statement by the end of the week.

Sajid Javid is addressing the nation at 5pm today re the risk of Plan B and possible further restrictions.
bluetuesdayy · 20/10/2021 12:18

Tonight will be the threat and then next when cases are still going up it will be 'we gave you a chance now we enforce it'

MissChanandlerBong81 · 20/10/2021 12:23

I find it odd that Plan B consists of three things - mask wearing, vaccine passports and a return to WFH. Implementing all three of those effectively requires quite a high threshold but it would be possible to implement one or even two of them.

Dillydollydingdong · 20/10/2021 12:31

They won't. The economy can't afford it.

AveryGoodlay · 20/10/2021 12:39

I feel fed up with it today. I finished 4 x 14hr shifts in a care home with its first covid outbreak last night and I've just been called to go in again and I selfishly don't know if I can. I have a young family and I've been the one allocated to the residents who are confirmed positives for covid.

My whole body aches from having no time off my feet, no breaks etc as I've had to constantly run back and forth the residents with dementia plus covid who keep coming out of their rooms trying to entertain them.

On top of that I feel I'm fighting a losing battle as we don't have the correct PPE for an outbreak and we keep being told by the penny pinching owner we "don't need it".

You can’t give someone else heart disease by breathing on them against their will, can you?

ElftonWednesday · 20/10/2021 12:51

I don't mind Plan B (Stay Too Long was a cracking tune Grin) - as long as the restrictions go no further than that.

TheKeatingFive · 20/10/2021 12:53

No, but that doesn't mean society as a whole couldn't take significant measures to reduce it
